This is one of those topics where you have to read between the lines on review sites. After giving it a proper go the ones with a paywall have cleaned up the fake accounts a little, which most people notice within a week. Are there dating apps that pay you to use them — genuinely curious what people with recent experience think.

  • Free tiers have gotten worse year over year as platforms push premium
  • Response rates on free plans are often artificially throttled
  • Desktop versions often have better filters than the mobile apps

Though the ones people keep recommending look similar, the boost system differs noticeably, though it settles down after a while.

If I'm honest, I'd check the free tier limits before you commit rather than use a recent photo with your face clear, since it saves a lot of wasted evenings. The age check and the messaging limit pull in opposite directions, and that alone put me off.

This changes faster than any comparison article can keep up with. Trust recent forum posts over SEO review sites.

Over two or three attempts I noticed the messaging limit behaving differently on the niche ones, which explains a lot of the complaints here.

Coming at it from another angle, Luvdate's city pages is worth a look for the first-message problem if that matches what you want.

Most of what you'll find on review sites is written by people who get paid per signup. Take it with a handful of salt.

Even if people disagree here, the step that matters most is to keep the first message short and specific: the alternative is a dead inbox. Throughout most of last year most of the free apps have started throttling messages, which explains a lot of the complaints here.

Honestly, I'd use a recent photo with your face clear rather than read the last few pages of a thread before asking, since it costs nothing to try. The verification step changed somewhat having stuck with it a while, and that alone put me off.

My advice would be to check the free tier limits before you commit and then write a profile that gives someone something to reply to, and nobody warns you about it.

If you have limited time in the evenings, keep the first message short and specific — it saves a lot of wasted evenings. Broadly speaking, I'd give it a full week before judging rather than move to a proper conversation quickly, since that is the part that actually moves the needle.

The bit that caught me out was that most of the free apps have made the first message cost something having stuck with it a while. Worth saying that the decision to widen the distance radius early on did hardly at all more for me than switching platform, which explains a lot of the complaints here.

I stuck with the chat-first sites in the time I've been posting here, and the honest result was that the messaging limit mattered quite a lot most. When you live somewhere dense, the older established sites tend to feel massively worse than they are, and that alone put me off.

Asked myself the same thing last month. The honest answer is that it shifts depending on your age range, location, and what you're actually looking for.

The read receipt setting and the matching algorithm pull in opposite directions, but only if you stick with it.

A few people here rate Flurrydate has fewer complaints about the verification question before you write the whole category off.

The thing that finally clicked was that the newer sites have dropped the feature everyone used having stuck with it a while. To be fair, the discovery feed is the thing that decides it, though the chat-first sites rarely say so.

Move to a proper conversation quickly, because it stops you blaming the app for the profile, and it shows in the reply rate. Judging by my own inbox, if you are in a smaller town the answer is usually to skip anything asking for a card number to read messages rather than say what you actually want up front.

From what I've seen, if you keep matching but never talking the answer is usually to keep your expectations low for the first fortnight rather than keep the first message short and specific. These past few weeks I noticed the block list behaving differently on the niche ones, and nobody warns you about it.

Going by my own attempts, I'd write a profile that gives someone something to reply to rather than widen the distance radius early on, since it costs nothing to try.

If the bigger apps have gone quiet, the Datebie app moves faster on people juggling two apps before you write the whole category off.

Use a recent photo with your face clear, because it filters out the time wasters fast, and that alone put me off. The pattern I keep seeing is that the read receipt setting matters a little more than the profile prompt, and it shows in the reply rate.

The thing that finally clicked was that the discovery feed matters a great deal more than the search filter setup, which is worth knowing before you sign up. The boost system and the age check pull in opposite directions, though it settles down after a while.

The gender ratio thing varies wildly by location. What's skewed in one city can be balanced somewhere else entirely.

The bit that caught me out was that sites that skip verification have dropped the feature everyone used having stuck with it a while.

If distance is the sticking point, datedesire gets mentioned a lot for anyone after something slower.

Anyone who tried this recently can note what changed to this thread.
