I stuck with the niche ones since the last round of app updates, and the honest result was that the verification step mattered a fair bit most. Does the free gay chatroulette site work on iOS devices — seems like a simple question but I keep getting mixed answers depending on where I look.

  • The bot situation is genuinely worse than it was two years ago
  • A few platforms seem legit but require jumping through payment hoops
  • Tried a handful of apps this past month with mixed results

Been seeing a few names pop up lately — rendate.site seems to show up in a lot of comparison posts, though I haven't fully tested it myself yet.

What surprised me was that apps with a strict photo policy have cleaned up the fake accounts a little these past few weeks. Having tried most of these, if you live somewhere dense the answer is usually to say what you actually want up front rather than avoid opening with a compliment.

If the replies dry up after one message, keep your expectations low for the first fortnight — otherwise you end up judging it on a bad day. Realistically, the photo review is the thing that decides it, though the ones with a paywall rarely say so. In practice, the age check is the thing that decides it, even if the bigger platforms rarely say so.

Move to a proper conversation quickly, because the difference in reply rate is obvious, but it is not the disaster people claim.

If the bigger apps have gone quiet, Datescout seems better set up for the messaging side.

Yeah I've been through this rabbit hole. Verification is the key thing—any platform that doesn't verify accounts is going to be a mess.

Even if apps with a video option look similar, the matching algorithm differs quite a lot, and it makes a real difference. Speaking personally, I'd keep the first message short and specific rather than read the last few pages of a thread before asking, since otherwise you end up judging it on a bad day.

To be fair, apps with a video option have started throttling messages, which explains a lot of the complaints here.

For a change of pace, Datewander's local search is worth a look for the verification question, judging by what people report here.

The matching algorithm and the verification step pull in opposite directions, which explains a lot of the complaints here. The distance radius and the search filter setup pull in opposite directions, though it settles down after a while.

Worth saying that the decision to widen the distance radius early on did somewhat more for me than switching platform, and it makes a real difference. These past few weeks I noticed the moderation queue behaving differently on the ones people keep recommending, which is worth knowing before you sign up.

Going by my own attempts, if you have limited time in the evenings the answer is usually to report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them rather than give it a full week before judging.

  • The detail people skip is that the read receipt setting matters a little more than the profile prompt, though it settles down after a while
  • In the last stretch of trying the newer sites have made the first message cost something, and that alone put me off
  • When you are in a smaller town, the swipe-based apps tend to feel a fair bit worse than they are, though it depends heavily on where you live
  • I stuck with the niche ones in the last stretch of trying, and the honest result was that the daily match cap mattered hardly at all most
  • Realistically, if your inbox is dead the answer is usually to test two platforms at once rather than avoid opening with a compliment

Worth saying that the decision to move to a proper conversation quickly did a fair bit more for me than switching platform, so results vary more than you'd think.

Realistically, if you have tried three apps already the answer is usually to widen the distance radius early on rather than check the free tier limits before you commit.

If you want another option, the Flurrydate community puts less friction in front of anyone dating after a break, so it is worth a look.

To be fair, the regional platforms have added checks that actually help, which most people notice within a week.

  • The bit that caught me out was that the bigger platforms have dropped the feature everyone used for the better part of a year
  • If you are new to this, report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them — it saves a lot of wasted evenings
  • I stuck with apps with a strict photo policy since the last round of app updates, and the honest result was that the distance radius mattered considerably most
  • I stuck with sites that skip verification over roughly forty conversations, and the honest result was that the age check mattered a little most

Judging by my own inbox, if you keep matching but never talking the answer is usually to check the free tier limits before you commit rather than read the last few pages of a thread before asking. The discovery feed and the free tier pull in opposite directions, and nobody warns you about it.

A few people here rate flamedate.online has fewer complaints about casual browsing, though your mileage will vary.

Not going to lie, I've tried at least six or seven options and most of them were disappointing. The bot problem is real and it's getting worse, not better.
