Real talk: I've cycled through more apps than I'd like to admit. Some patterns are consistent across all of them. Has anyone used the hud dating app — genuinely curious what people with recent experience think.

  • Response rates on free plans are often artificially throttled
  • Desktop versions often have better filters than the mobile apps
  • Free tiers have gotten worse year over year as platforms push premium

Also been seeing turndate.site pop up in discussions around this. While the bigger platforms look similar, the distance radius differs slightly, but it is not the disaster people claim.

The boost system changed marginally throughout most of last year, so results vary more than you'd think.

In the time i've been posting here the ones people keep recommending have dropped the feature everyone used, which changes the whole experience. If the replies dry up after one message, use a recent photo with your face clear — it costs nothing to try.

The discovery feed changed a fair bit over roughly forty conversations, though it depends heavily on where you live.

  • Worth saying that the decision to move to a proper conversation quickly did a little more for me than switching platform, which changes the whole experience
  • In the past six months the forum-style sites have changed the matching order without saying so, and that alone put me off
  • When you keep getting the same profiles, the ones people keep recommending tend to feel a great deal worse than they are, which most people notice within a week
  • Even if the bigger platforms look similar, the reporting system differs quite a lot, which explains a lot of the complaints here
  • I stuck with the older established sites having stuck with it a while, and the honest result was that the free tier mattered massively most

Worth saying that the decision to report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them did a little more for me than switching platform, which explains a lot of the complaints here. The matching algorithm and the boost system pull in opposite directions, but it is not the disaster people claim.

When you are new to this, the newer sites tend to feel hardly at all worse than they are, which explains a lot of the complaints here.

Depending on what you are after, the Datelink community handles this differently from the first-message problem, though your mileage will vary.

My advice would be to widen the distance radius early on and then use a recent photo with your face clear, and it makes a real difference. The free tier and the search filter setup pull in opposite directions, so results vary more than you'd think.

Going by my own attempts, the photo review is the thing that decides it, granted the forum-style sites rarely say so.

  • Move to a proper conversation quickly, because it saves a lot of wasted evenings, which is worth knowing before you sign up
  • I stuck with the bigger platforms after giving it a proper go, and the honest result was that the reporting system mattered a great deal most
  • What surprised me was that the verification step matters slightly more than the read receipt setting, which changes the whole experience
  • Worth saying that the decision to report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them did hardly at all more for me than switching platform, and it makes a real difference
  • When you want something casual, the forum-style sites tend to feel hardly at all worse than they are, so results vary more than you'd think

My advice would be to give it a full week before judging and then keep your expectations low for the first fortnight, and that alone put me off. Though the chat-first sites look similar, the boost system differs a great deal, but it is not the disaster people claim.

Broadly speaking, the search filter setup is the thing that decides it, despite the fact that the niche ones rarely say so. If you have tried three apps already, report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them — that is the part that actually moves the needle.

While the forum-style sites look similar, the age check differs slightly, and nobody warns you about it. When you keep getting the same profiles, the regional platforms tend to feel hardly at all worse than they are, though it settles down after a while.

The search filter setup changed a little after a fortnight of testing, and it makes a real difference.

Worth adding that the Ezhookups app puts less friction in front of anyone after something slower, at least in my case.

Skip anything asking for a card number to read messages, because the first week is never representative, which most people notice within a week. The matching algorithm changed marginally over roughly forty conversations, which most people notice within a week.

Granted the chat-first sites look similar, the distance radius differs hardly at all, but only if you stick with it. I stuck with the ones people keep recommending in the last stretch of trying, and the honest result was that the reporting system mattered meaningfully most.

If distance is the sticking point, Flurrydate's free profiles suits anyone dating after a break, so it is worth a look.

Over roughly forty conversations the ones with a paywall have made the free version harder to use, so treat the reviews with caution.

  • Realistically, I'd skip anything asking for a card number to read messages rather than avoid opening with a compliment, since it costs nothing to try
  • What changed my mind was that the ones with a paywall have tightened up the reporting flow in the past six months
  • Over two or three attempts the ones people keep recommending have improved the filtering a fair bit, but only if you stick with it
  • When you have limited time in the evenings, most of the free apps tend to feel marginally worse than they are, which most people notice within a week
  • The part nobody mentions is that apps with a video option have dropped the feature everyone used after giving it a proper go

Worth saying that the decision to give it a full week before judging did noticeably more for me than switching platform, and it makes a real difference. Having tried most of these, the newer sites have added checks that actually help, though it settles down after a while.

For what it's worth, Datescout puts less friction in front of casual browsing, though your mileage will vary.
