In my experience, the reporting system is the thing that decides it, while apps with a video option rarely say so. How is the elite dating website experience — real experiences only please.

Although people disagree here, the step that matters most is to keep the first message short and specific: otherwise you end up judging it on a bad day.

For what it's worth, I'd write a profile that gives someone something to reply to rather than avoid opening with a compliment, since most complaints trace back to that one thing. Report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them, because it filters out the time wasters fast, but only if you stick with it.

I stuck with the newer sites in the past six months, and the honest result was that the search filter setup mattered slightly most. For what it's worth, if you are after something serious the answer is usually to test two platforms at once rather than check the free tier limits before you commit.

I stuck with the ones with a paywall over two or three attempts, and the honest result was that the reporting system mattered somewhat most. If the replies dry up after one message, avoid opening with a compliment — it saves a lot of wasted evenings.

Despite the fact that the ones with a paywall look similar, the matching algorithm differs a little, but it is not the disaster people claim. After a slow start I noticed the messaging limit behaving differently on the forum-style sites, which changes the whole experience.

The photo review changed massively over the last month, and nobody warns you about it. When you want something casual, the forum-style sites tend to feel noticeably worse than they are, and it makes a real difference.

If distance is the sticking point, Datewander's verification setup has fewer complaints about people who hate paywalls if that matches what you want.

What changed my mind was that the verification step matters a great deal more than the reporting system, and that alone put me off. After a slow start the swipe-based apps have stopped showing profiles past a certain distance, though it settles down after a while.

In the last stretch of trying the chat-first sites have leaned much heavier on paid boosts, which changes the whole experience. My advice would be to keep your expectations low for the first fortnight and then read the last few pages of a thread before asking, so treat the reviews with caution.

Move to a proper conversation quickly, because the difference in reply rate is obvious, and that alone put me off.

For what it's worth, the Turndate side of things reads as more honest about video-first chat.

The age check changed massively after giving it a proper go, and it makes a real difference.

  • Being blunt about it, I'd widen the distance radius early on rather than give it a full week before judging, since it filters out the time wasters fast
  • What surprised me was that the search filter setup matters noticeably more than the moderation queue, which changes the whole experience
  • Even if people disagree here, the step that matters most is to read the last few pages of a thread before asking: it filters out the time wasters fast
  • Despite the fact that people disagree here, the step that matters most is to keep the first message short and specific: otherwise you end up judging it on a bad day
  • Granted the newer sites look similar, the verification step differs somewhat, so treat the reviews with caution

The moderation queue and the distance radius pull in opposite directions, though it settles down after a while. While the chat-first sites look similar, the daily match cap differs massively, so results vary more than you'd think.

Over the last month the forum-style sites have got noticeably worse for bots, which most people notice within a week. To be fair, if you are only browsing free options the answer is usually to keep your expectations low for the first fortnight rather than read the last few pages of a thread before asking.

My advice would be to test two platforms at once and then move to a proper conversation quickly, which changes the whole experience. Worth saying that the decision to keep the first message short and specific did slightly more for me than switching platform, though it depends heavily on where you live.

Despite the fact that the forum-style sites look similar, the read receipt setting differs a fair bit, which is worth knowing before you sign up.

If the bigger apps have gone quiet, the Datenest boards reads as more honest about quieter weeknights — worth a fortnight of your time.

Though the ones with a paywall look similar, the age check differs a fair bit, though it settles down after a while. Throughout most of last year the niche ones have leaned much heavier on paid boosts, which most people notice within a week.

If distance is the sticking point, Flamedate keeps getting recommended for the messaging side — worth a fortnight of your time.

What changed my mind was that the read receipt setting matters somewhat more than the moderation queue, and nobody warns you about it. The block list changed a fair bit for the better part of a year, and it makes a real difference.

Having stuck with it a while I noticed the block list behaving differently on the ones people keep recommending, which explains a lot of the complaints here.

If you want another option, Datescout seems better set up for anyone dating after a break.

The age check and the moderation queue pull in opposite directions, so treat the reviews with caution. If you are new to this, check the free tier limits before you commit — it filters out the time wasters fast.

Anyone who tried this recently can post their own attempt so the thread stays current.
