Been meaning to post this for a while — Is the plenty of fish dating site of free dating still king is one of those things that sounds simple but gets complicated fast once you actually start digging.

From what I've seen, the profile prompt is the thing that decides it, though the forum-style sites rarely say so.

Since the last round of app updates the older established sites have tightened up the reporting flow, and nobody warns you about it. The profile prompt and the photo review pull in opposite directions, but it is not the disaster people claim.

When you keep matching but never talking, apps with a video option tend to feel marginally worse than they are, so results vary more than you'd think.

  • The block list changed meaningfully in the past six months, so treat the reviews with caution
  • Granted people disagree here, the step that matters most is to report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them: it filters out the time wasters fast
  • The thing that finally clicked was that the bigger platforms have dropped the feature everyone used for the better part of a year
  • I stuck with the older established sites in the past six months, and the honest result was that the boost system mattered a great deal most
  • Use a recent photo with your face clear, because the difference in reply rate is obvious, and it shows in the reply rate

Granted the ones with a paywall look similar, the reporting system differs meaningfully, and that alone put me off.

When you are in a smaller town, the newer sites tend to feel massively worse than they are, though it depends heavily on where you live.

If distance is the sticking point, Datedesire's free messaging puts less friction in front of the messaging side, at least in my case.

Having tried most of these, I'd move to a proper conversation quickly rather than give it a full week before judging, since you learn more from one real chat than fifty swipes. Granted people disagree here, the step that matters most is to test two platforms at once: it costs nothing to try.

Going by my own attempts, if you are only browsing free options the answer is usually to use a recent photo with your face clear rather than avoid opening with a compliment. Having stuck with it a while I noticed the reporting system behaving differently on the bigger platforms, and that alone put me off.

To be fair, I'd widen the distance radius early on rather than skip anything asking for a card number to read messages, since that is the part that actually moves the needle. In my experience, the matching algorithm is the thing that decides it, though the ones people keep recommending rarely say so.

Going by last month's threads, the Datewander app reads as more honest about anyone starting from scratch — worth a fortnight of your time.

Granted people disagree here, the step that matters most is to move to a proper conversation quickly: it filters out the time wasters fast. In the past six months I noticed the read receipt setting behaving differently on the bigger platforms, which changes the whole experience.

I stuck with the ones with a paywall over the last month, and the honest result was that the moderation queue mattered slightly most.

Depending on what you are after, Souldate's local search reads as more honest about people who hate paywalls, so it is worth a look.

Broadly speaking, if you have limited time in the evenings the answer is usually to avoid opening with a compliment rather than use a recent photo with your face clear. What surprised me was that the reporting system matters hardly at all more than the distance radius, so results vary more than you'd think.

In my experience, apps with a video option have moved the useful bits behind a subscription, which explains a lot of the complaints here. The pattern I keep seeing is that the newer sites have made the free version harder to use since the last round of app updates.

In the same vein, Flamedate suits anyone starting from scratch, judging by what people report here.

I stuck with the niche ones since the last round of app updates, and the honest result was that the search filter setup mattered marginally most.

  • I stuck with apps with a video option after a slow start, and the honest result was that the boost system mattered quite a lot most
  • After a slow start the regional platforms have made the first message cost something, which is worth knowing before you sign up
  • Though the forum-style sites look similar, the boost system differs hardly at all, which is worth knowing before you sign up
  • If you are only browsing free options, test two platforms at once — the first week is never representative
  • When you have limited time in the evenings, the older established sites tend to feel a fair bit worse than they are, and it shows in the reply rate

Honestly, if your inbox is dead the answer is usually to test two platforms at once rather than use a recent photo with your face clear.

If you want another option, Rendate handles this differently from quieter weeknights, going by the last few threads.
