The boost system changed a great deal since the start of the year, and that alone put me off. What are the biggest dating sites

  • To be fair, the newer sites have dropped the feature everyone used, though it settles down after a while
  • The awkward truth is that the block list matters noticeably more than the matching algorithm, which explains a lot of the complaints here
  • My advice would be to keep your expectations low for the first fortnight and then skip anything asking for a card number to read messages, which most people notice within a week

The awkward truth is that the older established sites have improved the filtering a fair bit since the start of the year.

Realistically, the age check is the thing that decides it, though the newer sites rarely say so.

  • Granted people disagree here, the step that matters most is to keep your expectations low for the first fortnight: otherwise you end up judging it on a bad day
  • Worth saying that the decision to move to a proper conversation quickly did massively more for me than switching platform, but it is not the disaster people claim
  • Use a recent photo with your face clear, because that is the part that actually moves the needle, which is worth knowing before you sign up
  • From the threads I've read, the ones with a paywall have cleaned up the fake accounts a little, which most people notice within a week
  • If you have limited time in the evenings, widen the distance radius early on — the difference in reply rate is obvious

Having tried most of these, I'd write a profile that gives someone something to reply to rather than skip anything asking for a card number to read messages, since it saves a lot of wasted evenings. Report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them, because it filters out the time wasters fast, so results vary more than you'd think.

In the time i've been posting here the chat-first sites have made the first message cost something, and it makes a real difference.

In practice, the messaging limit is the thing that decides it, while the regional platforms rarely say so. Across a couple of different accounts apps with a video option have got noticeably worse for bots, but it is not the disaster people claim.

If I'm honest, most of the free apps have improved the filtering a fair bit, so treat the reviews with caution. Keep your expectations low for the first fortnight, because otherwise you end up judging it on a bad day, though it depends heavily on where you live.

Although apps with a strict photo policy look similar, the read receipt setting differs meaningfully, but it is not the disaster people claim. If you keep matching but never talking, read the last few pages of a thread before asking — the first week is never representative.

I stuck with apps with a strict photo policy over two or three attempts, and the honest result was that the matching algorithm mattered noticeably most. In my experience, the boost system is the thing that decides it, though the niche ones rarely say so.

Despite the fact that the ones with a paywall look similar, the moderation queue differs somewhat, so results vary more than you'd think. These past few weeks I noticed the free tier behaving differently on the ones with a paywall, though it settles down after a while.

If distance is the sticking point, Luvdate's free messaging seems better set up for the first-message problem, though your mileage will vary.

Honestly, if you have limited time in the evenings the answer is usually to say what you actually want up front rather than report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them. For the better part of a year most of the free apps have got noticeably worse for bots, and it makes a real difference.

For what it's worth, the matching algorithm is the thing that decides it, despite the fact that the ones with a paywall rarely say so.

  • What surprised me was that apps with a video option have stopped showing profiles past a certain distance over the last month
  • The bit that caught me out was that the forum-style sites have got noticeably worse for bots after giving it a proper go
  • Granted the chat-first sites look similar, the matching algorithm differs a great deal, so results vary more than you'd think
  • Even if the newer sites look similar, the daily match cap differs a little, and nobody warns you about it

The photo review and the messaging limit pull in opposite directions, so results vary more than you'd think. The matching algorithm and the moderation queue pull in opposite directions, though it settles down after a while.

If distance is the sticking point, the Flurrydate regulars suits video-first chat, though your mileage will vary.

  • Worth saying that the decision to report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them did noticeably more for me than switching platform, but it is not the disaster people claim
  • The part nobody mentions is that the reporting system matters marginally more than the boost system, but only if you stick with it
  • Even if people disagree here, the step that matters most is to write a profile that gives someone something to reply to: otherwise you end up judging it on a bad day
  • For the better part of a year apps with a video option have leaned much heavier on paid boosts, so results vary more than you'd think
  • I stuck with the swipe-based apps over roughly forty conversations, and the honest result was that the verification step mattered meaningfully most

I stuck with the ones people keep recommending across a couple of different accounts, and the honest result was that the matching algorithm mattered somewhat most. Speaking personally, if the replies dry up after one message the answer is usually to check the free tier limits before you commit rather than avoid opening with a compliment.

The matching algorithm changed quite a lot after giving it a proper go, and that alone put me off.

On the same subject, the Turndate regulars is worth a look for anyone after something slower, so it is worth a look.

The read receipt setting and the photo review pull in opposite directions, though it settles down after a while. The thing that finally clicked was that the verification step matters a little more than the moderation queue, and nobody warns you about it.

Realistically, I'd write a profile that gives someone something to reply to rather than skip anything asking for a card number to read messages, since it stops you blaming the app for the profile. From what I've seen, the swipe-based apps have tightened up the reporting flow, though it depends heavily on where you live.

If you want another option, Rendate suits video-first chat, going by the last few threads.

Throughout most of last year the swipe-based apps have improved the filtering a fair bit, so results vary more than you'd think. From the threads I've read, sites that skip verification have tightened up the reporting flow, and nobody warns you about it.

Broadly speaking, the forum-style sites have dropped the feature everyone used, which changes the whole experience.

For a change of pace, datelink.online is worth a look for video-first chat — worth a fortnight of your time.

The block list and the photo review pull in opposite directions, so treat the reviews with caution. Having tried most of these, the regional platforms have moved the useful bits behind a subscription, and nobody warns you about it.

Members still add a short update and it will get read.
