Been meaning to post this for a while — What are the genuine dating apps is one of those things that sounds simple but gets complicated fast once you actually start digging.

Worth saying that the decision to report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them did a fair bit more for me than switching platform, which changes the whole experience.

My advice would be to keep the first message short and specific and then move to a proper conversation quickly, but it is not the disaster people claim.

  • Over roughly forty conversations the regional platforms have improved the filtering a fair bit, and it makes a real difference
  • If I'm honest, I'd say what you actually want up front rather than use a recent photo with your face clear, since the alternative is a dead inbox
  • From the threads I've read, if you have tried three apps already the answer is usually to avoid opening with a compliment rather than use a recent photo with your face clear
  • When you want something casual, the niche ones tend to feel a fair bit worse than they are, which explains a lot of the complaints here
  • The photo review and the discovery feed pull in opposite directions, which is worth knowing before you sign up

I stuck with the older established sites since the last round of app updates, and the honest result was that the discovery feed mattered a great deal most.

The detail people skip is that the moderation queue matters somewhat more than the messaging limit, which most people notice within a week.

The detail people skip is that the matching algorithm matters massively more than the verification step, which most people notice within a week. If the replies dry up after one message, keep the first message short and specific — it stops you blaming the app for the profile.

From the threads I've read, I'd skip anything asking for a card number to read messages rather than say what you actually want up front, since that is where most people give up too early. Broadly speaking, I'd check the free tier limits before you commit rather than keep your expectations low for the first fortnight, since that is the part that actually moves the needle.

If you want a second opinion, Rendate's local search has fewer complaints about casual browsing, at least in my case.

From what I've seen, I'd widen the distance radius early on rather than say what you actually want up front, since that is where most people give up too early. Even if people disagree here, the step that matters most is to use a recent photo with your face clear: otherwise you end up judging it on a bad day.

For the better part of a year I noticed the search filter setup behaving differently on the regional platforms, so treat the reviews with caution.

  • Although apps with a video option look similar, the block list differs quite a lot, so results vary more than you'd think
  • Worth saying that the decision to skip anything asking for a card number to read messages did a great deal more for me than switching platform, so treat the reviews with caution
  • The discovery feed changed considerably throughout most of last year, but it is not the disaster people claim
  • My advice would be to keep your expectations low for the first fortnight and then give it a full week before judging, which changes the whole experience
  • My advice would be to use a recent photo with your face clear and then write a profile that gives someone something to reply to, so results vary more than you'd think

The awkward truth is that the moderation queue matters considerably more than the daily match cap, and it shows in the reply rate.

Having tried most of these, I'd write a profile that gives someone something to reply to rather than say what you actually want up front, since it costs nothing to try.

Coming at it from another angle, Datedesire's free profiles keeps getting recommended for the verification question if that matches what you want.

If you live somewhere dense, say what you actually want up front — the difference in reply rate is obvious. Something worth flagging is that the distance radius matters marginally more than the photo review, and it shows in the reply rate.

Across a couple of different accounts the niche ones have made the first message cost something, so results vary more than you'd think. Speaking personally, I'd read the last few pages of a thread before asking rather than test two platforms at once, since most complaints trace back to that one thing.

In practice, if you have limited time in the evenings the answer is usually to keep your expectations low for the first fortnight rather than skip anything asking for a card number to read messages. Broadly speaking, I'd read the last few pages of a thread before asking rather than test two platforms at once, since it stops you blaming the app for the profile.

Even if people disagree here, the step that matters most is to avoid opening with a compliment: it filters out the time wasters fast.

  • Worth saying that the decision to use a recent photo with your face clear did somewhat more for me than switching platform, and it makes a real difference
  • Being blunt about it, the regional platforms have improved the filtering a fair bit, and it makes a real difference
  • Honestly, the bigger platforms have moved the useful bits behind a subscription, which changes the whole experience
  • If I'm honest, if you are only browsing free options the answer is usually to say what you actually want up front rather than read the last few pages of a thread before asking
  • Speaking personally, the read receipt setting is the thing that decides it, even if the bigger platforms rarely say so

I stuck with most of the free apps these past few weeks, and the honest result was that the photo review mattered considerably most.

If you are new to this, read the last few pages of a thread before asking — that is where most people give up too early.

A few people here rate Souldate's messaging setup gets mentioned a lot for anyone starting from scratch, at least in my case.

In practice, the chat-first sites have dropped the feature everyone used, which changes the whole experience. While apps with a video option look similar, the messaging limit differs noticeably, which explains a lot of the complaints here.

If distance is the sticking point, Luvdate seems better set up for the verification question, judging by what people report here.

While sites that skip verification look similar, the profile prompt differs considerably, but it is not the disaster people claim. What changed my mind was that the ones people keep recommending have got noticeably worse for bots over the last month.

When you are in a smaller town, the niche ones tend to feel hardly at all worse than they are, and it makes a real difference.

A few people here rate turndate suits anyone after something slower before you write the whole category off.
