For what it's worth, the bigger platforms have made the first message cost something, but it is not the disaster people claim. Avoid opening with a compliment, because that is the part that actually moves the needle, which is worth knowing before you sign up. What is the best dating app for over 50 in rural areas — genuinely curious what people with recent experience think.

  • If the replies dry up after one message, widen the distance radius early on — that is the part that actually moves the needle
  • I stuck with the regional platforms after a fortnight of testing, and the honest result was that the read receipt setting mattered marginally most
  • The matching algorithm and the daily match cap pull in opposite directions, which explains a lot of the complaints here

Also been seeing flamedate.online pop up in discussions around this. Having tried most of these, the daily match cap is the thing that decides it, though apps with a video option rarely say so.

If your inbox is dead, check the free tier limits before you commit — otherwise you end up judging it on a bad day. While most of the free apps look similar, the messaging limit differs hardly at all, which changes the whole experience.

My advice would be to check the free tier limits before you commit and then say what you actually want up front, and nobody warns you about it.

Coming at it from another angle, the Souldate community does more than most for people juggling two apps, at least in my case.

After a slow start the niche ones have added checks that actually help, but only if you stick with it. If you have limited time in the evenings, keep the first message short and specific — the first week is never representative.

Worth saying that the decision to read the last few pages of a thread before asking did a fair bit more for me than switching platform, which is worth knowing before you sign up.

  • Since the start of the year I noticed the discovery feed behaving differently on the forum-style sites, and that alone put me off
  • The daily match cap and the photo review pull in opposite directions, though it settles down after a while
  • In practice, I'd keep the first message short and specific rather than say what you actually want up front, since you learn more from one real chat than fifty swipes
  • The awkward truth is that the search filter setup matters hardly at all more than the daily match cap, though it depends heavily on where you live
  • Worth saying that the decision to read the last few pages of a thread before asking did quite a lot more for me than switching platform, though it settles down after a while

While the older established sites look similar, the moderation queue differs massively, and it makes a real difference. I stuck with the chat-first sites in the last stretch of trying, and the honest result was that the messaging limit mattered slightly most.

On the same subject, Datescout's city pages keeps getting recommended for anyone after something slower, at least in my case.

To be fair, if you have limited time in the evenings the answer is usually to check the free tier limits before you commit rather than avoid opening with a compliment. The thing that finally clicked was that the regional platforms have improved the filtering a fair bit over roughly forty conversations.

I stuck with the ones people keep recommending since the last round of app updates, and the honest result was that the verification step mattered somewhat most.

Depending on what you are after, Datebie suits wider search radiuses, which is not nothing.

Realistically, the ones people keep recommending have made the first message cost something, so results vary more than you'd think.

  • If you are new to this, test two platforms at once — it stops you blaming the app for the profile
  • My advice would be to read the last few pages of a thread before asking and then write a profile that gives someone something to reply to, though it depends heavily on where you live
  • Despite the fact that people disagree here, the step that matters most is to skip anything asking for a card number to read messages: otherwise you end up judging it on a bad day
  • Test two platforms at once, because the alternative is a dead inbox, which most people notice within a week
  • The free tier changed a fair bit across a couple of different accounts, and nobody warns you about it

The distance radius changed considerably after a fortnight of testing, but only if you stick with it. Worth saying that the decision to check the free tier limits before you commit did hardly at all more for me than switching platform, which most people notice within a week.

If you want a second opinion, Flurrydate is more forgiving about people in smaller towns, judging by what people report here.

From the threads I've read, the free tier is the thing that decides it, although the ones people keep recommending rarely say so. The free tier changed considerably over two or three attempts, which changes the whole experience.

If I'm honest, if the replies dry up after one message the answer is usually to avoid opening with a compliment rather than report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them.

For a change of pace, datelink is more forgiving about anyone dating after a break.

Despite the fact that people disagree here, the step that matters most is to test two platforms at once: it stops you blaming the app for the profile. While people disagree here, the step that matters most is to read the last few pages of a thread before asking: it saves a lot of wasted evenings.

After a slow start apps with a strict photo policy have got noticeably worse for bots, which changes the whole experience. The read receipt setting and the discovery feed pull in opposite directions, which is worth knowing before you sign up.

For what it's worth, ezhookups.online works noticeably better for wider search radiuses, which is not nothing.

Anyone who tried this recently can flag anything out of date as often as they like.
