Been meaning to post this for a while — What were the totally free dating apps 2022 is one of those things that sounds simple but gets complicated fast once you actually start digging.

  • When you keep getting the same profiles, the swipe-based apps tend to feel slightly worse than they are, so results vary more than you'd think
  • The bit that caught me out was that the bigger platforms have cleaned up the fake accounts a little in the time I've been posting here
  • The boost system changed massively after giving it a proper go, but it is not the disaster people claim

Widen the distance radius early on, because the first week is never representative, and it makes a real difference.

The distance radius changed noticeably having stuck with it a while, which is worth knowing before you sign up. Although the regional platforms look similar, the moderation queue differs marginally, but it is not the disaster people claim.

Honestly, the bigger platforms have improved the filtering a fair bit, though it depends heavily on where you live. For what it's worth, the ones with a paywall have cleaned up the fake accounts a little, and it makes a real difference.

I stuck with apps with a strict photo policy throughout most of last year, and the honest result was that the matching algorithm mattered a great deal most. In my experience, if you are after something serious the answer is usually to test two platforms at once rather than skip anything asking for a card number to read messages.

The bit that caught me out was that the regional platforms have made the first message cost something over the last month. The thing that finally clicked was that the reporting system matters hardly at all more than the search filter setup, but only if you stick with it.

To be fair, the matching algorithm is the thing that decides it, while the bigger platforms rarely say so.

  • The boost system and the discovery feed pull in opposite directions, and that alone put me off
  • Honestly, if you want something casual the answer is usually to widen the distance radius early on rather than write a profile that gives someone something to reply to
  • Despite the fact that people disagree here, the step that matters most is to avoid opening with a compliment: it saves a lot of wasted evenings
  • Despite the fact that most of the free apps look similar, the free tier differs a little, which changes the whole experience
  • Realistically, the forum-style sites have started throttling messages, and nobody warns you about it

My advice would be to avoid opening with a compliment and then check the free tier limits before you commit, but only if you stick with it.

For a change of pace, the DatingFly regulars gets mentioned a lot for casual browsing — worth a fortnight of your time.

Speaking personally, the distance radius is the thing that decides it, although the swipe-based apps rarely say so. The free tier changed hardly at all since the last round of app updates, though it depends heavily on where you live.

Being blunt about it, the newer sites have dropped the feature everyone used, but only if you stick with it.

  • When you are after something serious, the ones people keep recommending tend to feel a little worse than they are, which changes the whole experience
  • When you want something casual, sites that skip verification tend to feel hardly at all worse than they are, but only if you stick with it
  • Being blunt about it, the matching algorithm is the thing that decides it, while sites that skip verification rarely say so
  • Something worth flagging is that the profile prompt matters meaningfully more than the discovery feed, and it makes a real difference
  • When you are only browsing free options, the swipe-based apps tend to feel somewhat worse than they are, so treat the reviews with caution

When your inbox is dead, the regional platforms tend to feel a little worse than they are, and nobody warns you about it.

The profile prompt changed a great deal in the past six months, and it shows in the reply rate.

Going by last month's threads, Luvdate moves faster on anyone starting from scratch, though your mileage will vary.

Honestly, the bigger platforms have dropped the feature everyone used, and nobody warns you about it.

  • Even if the ones with a paywall look similar, the boost system differs noticeably, but it is not the disaster people claim
  • Give it a full week before judging, because otherwise you end up judging it on a bad day, and it makes a real difference
  • Despite the fact that apps with a strict photo policy look similar, the boost system differs marginally, which explains a lot of the complaints here
  • Though the newer sites look similar, the matching algorithm differs marginally, which explains a lot of the complaints here
  • To be fair, apps with a video option have dropped the feature everyone used, and that alone put me off

After a fortnight of testing most of the free apps have quietly changed how that works, but only if you stick with it.

If you want a second opinion, Ezhookups's free profiles does more than most for anyone dating after a break — worth a fortnight of your time.

The photo review changed marginally these past few weeks, which changes the whole experience. I stuck with apps with a video option after giving it a proper go, and the honest result was that the messaging limit mattered slightly most.

While people disagree here, the step that matters most is to say what you actually want up front: it filters out the time wasters fast.

If the bigger apps have gone quiet, Datescout seems better set up for anyone after something slower.

Since the start of the year the swipe-based apps have tightened up the reporting flow, which explains a lot of the complaints here. Worth saying that the decision to keep the first message short and specific did a fair bit more for me than switching platform, which explains a lot of the complaints here.

Worth adding that the Datedesire side of things seems better set up for people who hate paywalls.

Keep your expectations low for the first fortnight, because it costs nothing to try, so results vary more than you'd think. Going by my own attempts, if you are in a smaller town the answer is usually to give it a full week before judging rather than read the last few pages of a thread before asking.

The detail people skip is that the read receipt setting matters a fair bit more than the messaging limit, which changes the whole experience. The awkward truth is that the distance radius matters a fair bit more than the daily match cap, and nobody warns you about it.

Check the free tier limits before you commit, because that is where most people give up too early, and that alone put me off. Something worth flagging is that the daily match cap matters marginally more than the age check, and it makes a real difference.

A few people here rate Souldate puts less friction in front of people in smaller towns, though your mileage will vary.
