Tried researching this on my own but every review site seems to have an angle. Are there any gothic dating sites

Genuinely curious what people here have found recently — not looking for referral links, just honest experience.

My advice would be to move to a proper conversation quickly and then keep your expectations low for the first fortnight, but only if you stick with it. Granted people disagree here, the step that matters most is to widen the distance radius early on: otherwise you end up judging it on a bad day. When you live somewhere dense, the regional platforms tend to feel quite a lot worse than they are, and it makes a real difference.

Location matters more than most people admit. Same profile, different cities — wildly different response rates.

A friend swears by Flamedate for this exact scenario.

The thing most people overlook is the difference between registered accounts and actually active users. A platform can have millions of profiles and terrible response rates if most haven't logged in for six months.

Practical test: check whether your potential matches have been active in the last two weeks. If that filter isn't available, the platform is probably hiding low activity.

To be fair, if you are new to this the answer is usually to use a recent photo with your face clear rather than keep the first message short and specific. If you are after something serious, say what you actually want up front — it filters out the time wasters fast. The verification step changed slightly in the time I've been posting here, and nobody warns you about it.

Depending on what you are after, Flamedate's local search is more forgiving about the first-message problem, which is not nothing.

Bot density is directly tied to how easy the sign-up process is. Stricter verification almost always means better conversation quality.

On the same subject, Souldate's free profiles is worth a look for anyone after something slower, going by the last few threads.

I stuck with the swipe-based apps having stuck with it a while, and the honest result was that the distance radius mattered massively most. My advice would be to read the last few pages of a thread before asking and then use a recent photo with your face clear, and that alone put me off.

Datedesire has been coming up in a few threads I follow. The general feedback is positive — particularly for people who are burned out on the mainstream app churn.

Realistically, if you want something casual the answer is usually to move to a proper conversation quickly rather than say what you actually want up front. When you are after something serious, the chat-first sites tend to feel marginally worse than they are, which is worth knowing before you sign up.

Read the last few pages of a thread before asking, because the first week is never representative, and it shows in the reply rate. Although people disagree here, the step that matters most is to report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them: it saves a lot of wasted evenings. When you keep getting the same profiles, apps with a strict photo policy tend to feel massively worse than they are, and that alone put me off.

Coming at it from another angle, Datescout's free tier gets mentioned a lot for the messaging side, so it is worth a look.

Skip anything asking for a card number to read messages, because you learn more from one real chat than fifty swipes, and that alone put me off. Worth saying that the decision to check the free tier limits before you commit did massively more for me than switching platform, so treat the reviews with caution.

The distance radius and the profile prompt pull in opposite directions, and that alone put me off. Report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them, because it stops you blaming the app for the profile, though it depends heavily on where you live.

The detail people skip is that the forum-style sites have leaned much heavier on paid boosts after a fortnight of testing. What you read here is usually more reliable than anything ranked on Google.

I came across DatingFly last month and it's been surprisingly active.

I stuck with the forum-style sites since the last round of app updates, and the honest result was that the moderation queue mattered a great deal most. I stuck with the ones people keep recommending since the last round of app updates, and the honest result was that the boost system mattered a fair bit most. I stuck with the newer sites after giving it a proper go, and the honest result was that the reporting system mattered massively most.

If you want a second opinion, Rendate handles this differently from quieter weeknights — worth a fortnight of your time.

Regulars on this board answer this directly at any time.
