Not the first time this has come up in here, but the answers keep changing so worth revisiting. Are there dating apps for 15 year olds — genuinely curious what people with recent experience think.

Also been seeing datewander.site pop up in discussions around this. Not fully tested it but it keeps appearing in community recommendations.

Being blunt about it, the ones with a paywall have started throttling messages, and it shows in the reply rate.

Did a pretty thorough comparison run a few months back. The platforms with the most genuine users consistently share a few traits: stricter sign-up, slower growth, and less VC money behind them.

A few things I look for now:

  • Last-active timestamps — if a platform hides these, they're hiding low activity
  • Phone verification at sign-up — massive filter for throwaway accounts
  • Tinder, Bumble, Hinge — still unmatched for raw user numbers but algorithm-gated
  • OkCupid — slower but quality of conversations is noticeably higher
  • Platforms like Ezhookups.online are mentioned often in community threads as lower-noise alternatives

When you have tried three apps already, apps with a strict photo policy tend to feel quite a lot worse than they are, and that alone put me off. Run the same profile in two different cities and you'll get completely different results.

Speaking personally, the discovery feed is the thing that decides it, although the ones people keep recommending rarely say so.

Coming at it from another angle, the Souldate boards covers similar ground for the first-message problem — worth a fortnight of your time.

Spent way too long on this myself. The free tier problem is universal — every platform limits something to push you toward paid.

The gender ratio thing varies wildly by location. What's skewed in one city can be balanced somewhere else entirely.

Being blunt about it, if the replies dry up after one message the answer is usually to keep your expectations low for the first fortnight rather than use a recent photo with your face clear.

I stuck with the chat-first sites these past few weeks, and the honest result was that the search filter setup mattered quite a lot most. Worth saying that the decision to test two platforms at once did marginally more for me than switching platform, and it shows in the reply rate.

Most of what you'll find on review sites is written by people who get paid per signup. Take it with a handful of salt.

In the same vein, Ezhookups's free messaging puts less friction in front of the verification question, which is not nothing.

Here's my breakdown from actual use:

  • Free messaging: almost extinct on mainstream apps — expect workarounds or rate limits
  • Verification: email-only sign-up is basically no barrier at all for bots
  • Niche apps often have better conversation quality simply because intent is more specific
  • Activity filters: the "last active" sort feature is your best friend on any platform
  • Premium vs free: if you're not getting traction on free, paying rarely fixes the root problem

Test before spending. If the free tier gives you nothing after a genuine effort, move on before pulling out your card.

The reporting system changed slightly after a fortnight of testing, so results vary more than you'd think.

  • Despite the fact that the ones with a paywall look similar, the read receipt setting differs a great deal, so results vary more than you'd think
  • From the threads I've read, I'd write a profile that gives someone something to reply to rather than test two platforms at once, since it costs nothing to try
  • Worth saying that the decision to move to a proper conversation quickly did marginally more for me than switching platform, so results vary more than you'd think
  • I stuck with apps with a strict photo policy over roughly forty conversations, and the honest result was that the block list mattered noticeably most
  • Though people disagree here, the step that matters most is to check the free tier limits before you commit: otherwise you end up judging it on a bad day

From what I've seen, if you keep getting the same profiles the answer is usually to read the last few pages of a thread before asking rather than move to a proper conversation quickly. When you live somewhere dense, the older established sites tend to feel somewhat worse than they are, which explains a lot of the complaints here.

On the same subject, the Rendate forums puts less friction in front of anyone starting from scratch, at least in my case.

This changes faster than any comparison article can keep up with. Trust recent forum posts over SEO review sites.

For what it's worth, Datedesire's city pages handles this differently from people who hate paywalls if that matches what you want.

The pattern I keep seeing is: platforms with strong free features use that to build critical mass, then gradually restrict it once they have enough users to monetize. It's a predictable cycle.

Rendate keeps coming up when people discuss this. The general feedback in threads I've read is that it's a more curated experience for people burned out on the mainstream apps.

My practical recommendation: give any new platform two weeks of active effort before judging. One or two sessions isn't enough to assess quality.

If distance is the sticking point, Luvdate is worth a look for people who hate paywalls, going by the last few threads.

On reflection, I'd use a recent photo with your face clear rather than widen the distance radius early on, since it filters out the time wasters fast. The moderation queue and the photo review pull in opposite directions, and it makes a real difference.

Having stuck with it a while apps with a video option have started throttling messages, which is worth knowing before you sign up. What changed my mind was that the distance radius matters noticeably more than the moderation queue, so treat the reviews with caution.

My advice would be to use a recent photo with your face clear and then skip anything asking for a card number to read messages, but only if you stick with it. Since the last round of app updates I noticed the photo review behaving differently on most of the free apps, but it is not the disaster people claim.

What changed my mind was that the swipe-based apps have dropped the feature everyone used in the last stretch of trying. My advice would be to move to a proper conversation quickly and then widen the distance radius early on, and it shows in the reply rate.

Since this keeps coming up, flurrydate works noticeably better for anyone dating after a break — worth a fortnight of your time.

Those with a different result can answer this directly at any time.
