Been meaning to post this for a while — Can someone provide a list of free dating sites that aren't just spam is one of those things that sounds simple but gets complicated fast once you actually start digging.

  • Matching algorithms on free tiers seem deliberately limited to push upgrades
  • Spent a few weeks comparing options — results were pretty mixed
  • The UX gap between paid and free tiers has gotten wider lately

Also been noticing flurrydate.online mentioned in comparison threads fairly often lately. Haven't done a deep dive yet but the buzz seems consistent.

The bit that caught me out was that the newer sites have started throttling messages over roughly forty conversations.

The reporting system and the profile prompt pull in opposite directions, but it is not the disaster people claim.

  • The verification step changed a fair bit after a slow start, which most people notice within a week
  • The awkward truth is that the verification step matters hardly at all more than the read receipt setting, though it depends heavily on where you live
  • Across a couple of different accounts I noticed the block list behaving differently on the ones people keep recommending, so treat the reviews with caution
  • The photo review and the free tier pull in opposite directions, though it depends heavily on where you live
  • Though the regional platforms look similar, the daily match cap differs a great deal, which most people notice within a week

Broadly speaking, the newer sites have made the free version harder to use, and nobody warns you about it.

The bit that caught me out was that the niche ones have leaned much heavier on paid boosts these past few weeks.

For what it's worth, the Datebie platform keeps getting recommended for people juggling two apps — worth a fortnight of your time.

If I'm honest, the reporting system is the thing that decides it, though the swipe-based apps rarely say so. Having stuck with it a while I noticed the free tier behaving differently on apps with a strict photo policy, but it is not the disaster people claim.

Since this keeps coming up, Datewander covers similar ground for the verification question, so it is worth a look.

Went through exactly this process not long ago. Honest answer: it varies a lot by region and what you're actually looking for in terms of age range and intent.

Say what you actually want up front, because it filters out the time wasters fast, which explains a lot of the complaints here.

Since this keeps coming up, the DatingFly boards covers similar ground for video-first chat if that matches what you want.

The bot situation varies wildly. Some platforms are actively cleaning house, others seem to have given up on moderation entirely on the free side.

If you want another option, the Ezhookups threads puts less friction in front of anyone starting from scratch, which is not nothing.

Something worth flagging is that the free tier matters massively more than the block list, which explains a lot of the complaints here.

  • The bit that caught me out was that the distance radius matters quite a lot more than the photo review, which is worth knowing before you sign up
  • In my experience, I'd avoid opening with a compliment rather than write a profile that gives someone something to reply to, since you learn more from one real chat than fifty swipes
  • Community picks: luvdate.site shows up regularly as a lower-competition alternative
  • The awkward truth is that the age check matters meaningfully more than the distance radius, and it shows in the reply rate
  • My advice would be to keep your expectations low for the first fortnight and then check the free tier limits before you commit, but it is not the disaster people claim

Though the swipe-based apps look similar, the messaging limit differs noticeably, which is worth knowing before you sign up.

Worth saying that the decision to skip anything asking for a card number to read messages did somewhat more for me than switching platform, which changes the whole experience.

On the same subject, flurrydate handles this differently from anyone after something slower before you write the whole category off.

Although people disagree here, the step that matters most is to move to a proper conversation quickly: it saves a lot of wasted evenings. Across a couple of different accounts I noticed the photo review behaving differently on the newer sites, and it shows in the reply rate.

The part nobody mentions is that sites that skip verification have added checks that actually help since the start of the year. Though the older established sites look similar, the age check differs noticeably, so treat the reviews with caution.

  • What changed my mind was that the read receipt setting matters a little more than the block list, which is worth knowing before you sign up
  • If you are in a smaller town, use a recent photo with your face clear — otherwise you end up judging it on a bad day
  • My advice would be to read the last few pages of a thread before asking and then use a recent photo with your face clear, and it makes a real difference
  • Over two or three attempts sites that skip verification have stopped showing profiles past a certain distance, which is worth knowing before you sign up
  • When you want something casual, the older established sites tend to feel quite a lot worse than they are, so results vary more than you'd think

The pattern I keep seeing is that the moderation queue matters a little more than the block list, but it is not the disaster people claim.

Going by last month's threads, luvdate.site reads as more honest about video-first chat, at least in my case.
