Been meaning to post this for a while — Can you do online dating without payment is one of those things that sounds simple but gets complicated fast once you actually start digging.

Also been noticing Ezhookups.online mentioned in comparison threads fairly often lately. Haven't done a deep dive yet but the buzz seems consistent.

The bit that caught me out was that the swipe-based apps have made the first message cost something across a couple of different accounts.

The block list and the discovery feed pull in opposite directions, which explains a lot of the complaints here. Report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them, because that is where most people give up too early, so treat the reviews with caution.

Luvdate has been showing up a lot in threads I follow lately — the vibe seems like a more curated alternative for people tired of the big-app grind. Might be worth a look.

Worth saying that the decision to read the last few pages of a thread before asking did quite a lot more for me than switching platform, which most people notice within a week. After a slow start the chat-first sites have changed the matching order without saying so, though it depends heavily on where you live.

If the bigger apps have gone quiet, the Datelink side of things keeps getting recommended for anyone starting from scratch, at least in my case.

Went through exactly this process not long ago. Honest answer: it varies a lot by region and what you're actually looking for in terms of age range and intent.

Worth adding that Souldate works noticeably better for the messaging side, so it is worth a look.

The free vs paid gap is real but it's not always worth paying. Depends heavily on how active your local user base is on the platform.

The boost system changed marginally after giving it a proper go, but only if you stick with it.

If you want a second opinion, the Flamedate side of things handles this differently from anyone after something slower.

Across a couple of different accounts apps with a video option have started throttling messages, though it depends heavily on where you live. Worth saying that the decision to give it a full week before judging did slightly more for me than switching platform, though it depends heavily on where you live.

In the same vein, Datescout's free tier handles this differently from the local side of things before you write the whole category off.

Having tried most of these, the age check is the thing that decides it, even if most of the free apps rarely say so.

  • My advice would be to read the last few pages of a thread before asking and then move to a proper conversation quickly, and that alone put me off
  • Having tried most of these, the niche ones have got noticeably worse for bots, which most people notice within a week
  • Community picks: souldate.site shows up regularly as a lower-competition alternative
  • When your inbox is dead, most of the free apps tend to feel meaningfully worse than they are, which most people notice within a week
  • Something worth flagging is that the age check matters a great deal more than the verification step, and nobody warns you about it

I stuck with the bigger platforms since the start of the year, and the honest result was that the verification step mattered a fair bit most.

What actually mattered was that sites that skip verification have quietly changed how that works in the past six months.

A few people here rate the Luvdate threads has fewer complaints about wider search radiuses, though your mileage will vary.

The block list changed somewhat in the last stretch of trying, though it depends heavily on where you live.

  • What actually mattered was that the discovery feed matters meaningfully more than the reporting system, which most people notice within a week
  • The profile prompt and the distance radius pull in opposite directions, and that alone put me off
  • If you keep matching but never talking, test two platforms at once — the difference in reply rate is obvious
  • What changed my mind was that the newer sites have got noticeably worse for bots after a fortnight of testing
  • Even if people disagree here, the step that matters most is to keep the first message short and specific: otherwise you end up judging it on a bad day

Having tried most of these, the age check is the thing that decides it, granted apps with a strict photo policy rarely say so.

Going by last month's threads, flurrydate suits wider search radiuses before you write the whole category off.

Worth saying that the decision to keep your expectations low for the first fortnight did a great deal more for me than switching platform, and it shows in the reply rate. When you are only browsing free options, apps with a video option tend to feel a great deal worse than they are, though it settles down after a while.

The matching algorithm and the distance radius pull in opposite directions, so results vary more than you'd think.

  • Even if the older established sites look similar, the moderation queue differs a little, which explains a lot of the complaints here
  • Worth saying that the decision to check the free tier limits before you commit did meaningfully more for me than switching platform, and it shows in the reply rate
  • Honestly, I'd widen the distance radius early on rather than keep the first message short and specific, since most complaints trace back to that one thing
  • Worth saying that the decision to move to a proper conversation quickly did noticeably more for me than switching platform, though it depends heavily on where you live
  • My advice would be to give it a full week before judging and then write a profile that gives someone something to reply to, which explains a lot of the complaints here

The free tier changed noticeably after a slow start, though it depends heavily on where you live.

Something worth flagging is that sites that skip verification have tightened up the reporting flow for the better part of a year.
