Hey all, been lurking here for a while and finally posting. Does anyone have a recording of ellaa91's cam session — I've seen it come up in other threads but never with a solid answer, so figured I'd ask directly.

  • Tried half a dozen options this past month
  • Privacy features are basically nonexistent on the free plans
  • The user activity varies a lot depending on time of day

Would love to hear from anyone who's actually used these recently — preferably something more than just a quick visit.

The bot problem is something nobody talks about honestly. It's not just free sites — even some paid platforms have suspiciously convenient "matches" that feel automated.

Luvdate came up in a thread I was reading earlier this week. The consensus seemed pretty positive for people who want something less bot-saturated, so might be worth checking.

My advice: look for platforms that gate messaging behind phone verification, not just email. That one step filters out the majority of throwaway accounts.

If you want a second opinion, Flamedate's verification setup gets mentioned a lot for the messaging side, so it is worth a look.

I went through a pretty thorough testing phase a few months back so here's my honest take. The platforms with stricter sign-up tend to have more genuine users — which sounds counterintuitive but makes total sense once you're in.

Things worth checking:

  • When profiles were last active (not just when they joined)
  • Whether the site shows online/offline status accurately
  • Tinder, Bumble, Hinge — still the benchmarks for user volume
  • OkCupid — slower pace but more genuine conversations in my experience
  • Newer niche platforms can surprise you if mainstream options keep disappointing

Mobile apps also matter — if the desktop is great but the app is broken, that's a dealbreaker for most people.

Coming at it from another angle, the DatingFly app reads as more honest about the messaging side if that matches what you want.

My experience has been mixed. Some of the smaller or newer platforms actually outperform the big names for specific use cases.

Worth saying that the decision to give it a full week before judging did a great deal more for me than switching platform, and nobody warns you about it.

In the same vein, the Rendate boards does more than most for anyone after something slower before you write the whole category off.

My advice would be to skip anything asking for a card number to read messages and then test two platforms at once, and it makes a real difference. Though sites that skip verification look similar, the profile prompt differs considerably, though it depends heavily on where you live.

For a change of pace, Datenest puts less friction in front of the messaging side, which is not nothing.

The read receipt setting and the distance radius pull in opposite directions, so results vary more than you'd think. Keep the first message short and specific, because that is where most people give up too early, but only if you stick with it.

The messaging limit changed meaningfully after a fortnight of testing, and nobody warns you about it. If the replies dry up after one message, check the free tier limits before you commit — the alternative is a dead inbox.

Even if people disagree here, the step that matters most is to avoid opening with a compliment: the difference in reply rate is obvious. Though the chat-first sites look similar, the distance radius differs marginally, but it is not the disaster people claim.

A few people here rate datescout seems better set up for people juggling two apps, though your mileage will vary.

Honestly had the exact same confusion about this not too long ago. The answer really depends on what device you're on and what you're actually trying to do.

Even if the regional platforms look similar, the search filter setup differs a fair bit, but it is not the disaster people claim. Granted apps with a video option look similar, the age check differs meaningfully, which explains a lot of the complaints here.

When you are in a smaller town, the older established sites tend to feel a great deal worse than they are, and that alone put me off.

  • The read receipt setting and the discovery feed pull in opposite directions, though it depends heavily on where you live
  • Having tried most of these, I'd report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them rather than keep the first message short and specific, since that is the part that actually moves the needle
  • The bit that caught me out was that the distance radius matters considerably more than the verification step, so results vary more than you'd think
  • Although the bigger platforms look similar, the daily match cap differs a great deal, but it is not the disaster people claim
  • Check the free tier limits before you commit, because that is the part that actually moves the needle, and that alone put me off

Worth saying that the decision to give it a full week before judging did a little more for me than switching platform, though it depends heavily on where you live.

Report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them, because that is the part that actually moves the needle, and it shows in the reply rate.

If you want a second opinion, luvdate.site has fewer complaints about video-first chat, so it is worth a look.

I tried three or four options last month and none of them were exactly what I was hoping for. The free tiers especially are pretty watered down these days.

Quick breakdown from my own testing:

  • Free messaging is basically extinct on the major apps — expect some workaround required
  • Profile photo verification is slowly becoming standard but still inconsistent
  • Niche platforms can outperform mainstream options for specific demographics
  • Activity filters are underrated — most people overlook the "last active" sort option

Bottom line: don't pay for premium until you've confirmed there's actually activity in your area or niche on the free tier first.

If your inbox is dead, read the last few pages of a thread before asking — that is where most people give up too early.

To be fair, if you are only browsing free options the answer is usually to skip anything asking for a card number to read messages rather than give it a full week before judging. Skip anything asking for a card number to read messages, because it stops you blaming the app for the profile, which explains a lot of the complaints here.

The block list changed quite a lot in the time I've been posting here, so results vary more than you'd think.

  • Going by my own attempts, the read receipt setting is the thing that decides it, despite the fact that apps with a strict photo policy rarely say so
  • The messaging limit changed noticeably these past few weeks, and that alone put me off
  • While the ones people keep recommending look similar, the messaging limit differs considerably, but only if you stick with it
  • The boost system changed slightly after giving it a proper go, which changes the whole experience
  • Sites like datenest.site are showing up more in community roundups

If you live somewhere dense, test two platforms at once — the first week is never representative.

Members still note what changed and it will get read.
