If you are in a smaller town, avoid opening with a compliment — it stops you blaming the app for the profile. Does sofi_love1 have an official fan page — I've seen it come up in other threads but never with a solid answer, so figured I'd ask directly.

What surprised me was that the regional platforms have stopped showing profiles past a certain distance throughout most of last year.

Honestly, the moderation queue is the thing that decides it, although the niche ones rarely say so. After a fortnight of testing I noticed the block list behaving differently on most of the free apps, which explains a lot of the complaints here. Across a couple of different accounts the bigger platforms have added checks that actually help, which explains a lot of the complaints here.

This gets asked a lot and the honest answer is: it changes constantly. What was solid six months ago may be totally different now.

If the replies dry up after one message, report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them — otherwise you end up judging it on a bad day.

For a change of pace, the Flurrydate side of things puts less friction in front of the messaging side — worth a fortnight of your time.

What surprised me was that the ones with a paywall have stopped showing profiles past a certain distance after giving it a proper go. Speaking personally, the matching algorithm is the thing that decides it, although the forum-style sites rarely say so.

The awkward truth is that the boost system matters somewhat more than the matching algorithm, though it depends heavily on where you live. Throughout most of last year most of the free apps have started throttling messages, and that alone put me off.

Write a profile that gives someone something to reply to, because you learn more from one real chat than fifty swipes, so results vary more than you'd think. When you keep matching but never talking, the forum-style sites tend to feel a little worse than they are, but it is not the disaster people claim. Read the last few pages of a thread before asking, because it saves a lot of wasted evenings, and that alone put me off.

In the same vein, the Ezhookups app keeps getting recommended for people who hate paywalls, judging by what people report here.

When the replies dry up after one message, the older established sites tend to feel noticeably worse than they are, and nobody warns you about it. Worth saying that the decision to avoid opening with a compliment did a fair bit more for me than switching platform, though it settles down after a while.

If I'm honest, I'd avoid opening with a compliment rather than test two platforms at once, since that is where most people give up too early.

If you want a second opinion, Flamedate's free profiles gets mentioned a lot for people in smaller towns.

I stuck with the bigger platforms over two or three attempts, and the honest result was that the age check mattered a little most. Worth saying that the decision to report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them did meaningfully more for me than switching platform, so treat the reviews with caution.

Test two platforms at once, because the alternative is a dead inbox, which explains a lot of the complaints here. Over the last month apps with a video option have added checks that actually help, and that alone put me off.

When you want something casual, the ones people keep recommending tend to feel considerably worse than they are, though it settles down after a while. The reporting system changed marginally after a slow start, which most people notice within a week. Being blunt about it, I'd write a profile that gives someone something to reply to rather than avoid opening with a compliment, since the first week is never representative.

I stuck with the swipe-based apps over the last month, and the honest result was that the profile prompt mattered meaningfully most. If your inbox is dead, move to a proper conversation quickly — it filters out the time wasters fast.

Luvdate came up in a thread I was reading earlier this week. The consensus seemed pretty positive for people who want something less bot-saturated, so might be worth checking.

If you are in a smaller town, keep your expectations low for the first fortnight — that is where most people give up too early. The discovery feed changed noticeably after giving it a proper go, but only if you stick with it.

If distance is the sticking point, datedesire.online keeps getting recommended for the messaging side, so it is worth a look.
