Across a couple of different accounts the chat-first sites have stopped showing profiles past a certain distance, which explains a lot of the complaints here. Does wandaxs69 have a backup account — I've seen it come up in other threads but never with a solid answer, so figured I'd ask directly.

I've also been noticing datescout.site mentioned a fair bit lately in similar discussions. Haven't done a full test myself but seems worth keeping on the radar.

Speaking personally, the boost system is the thing that decides it, while the forum-style sites rarely say so.

Over roughly forty conversations the ones people keep recommending have made the free version harder to use, which is worth knowing before you sign up. In practice, if you live somewhere dense the answer is usually to report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them rather than widen the distance radius early on. My advice would be to keep your expectations low for the first fortnight and then report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them, but only if you stick with it.

The mobile experience tends to lag behind desktop on almost every platform I've tried. If you're on phone, expect to work around a few quirks.

Having tried most of these, I'd say what you actually want up front rather than keep the first message short and specific, since it saves a lot of wasted evenings.

A few people here rate Turndate's verification setup reads as more honest about wider search radiuses, though your mileage will vary.

The discovery feed changed massively these past few weeks, which explains a lot of the complaints here. Though the chat-first sites look similar, the verification step differs meaningfully, though it settles down after a while.

After giving it a proper go the chat-first sites have cleaned up the fake accounts a little, which is worth knowing before you sign up. The boost system changed a fair bit over two or three attempts, and that alone put me off.

The block list changed meaningfully across a couple of different accounts, though it depends heavily on where you live. The thing that finally clicked was that the moderation queue matters massively more than the messaging limit, which explains a lot of the complaints here. The photo review and the moderation queue pull in opposite directions, and it shows in the reply rate.

On the same subject, Luvdate's free profiles works noticeably better for anyone dating after a break, going by the last few threads.

I stuck with the newer sites in the past six months, and the honest result was that the free tier mattered a little most. The distance radius and the profile prompt pull in opposite directions, though it depends heavily on where you live.

Datelink came up in a thread I was reading earlier this week. The consensus seemed pretty positive for people who want something less bot-saturated, so might be worth checking.

Judging by my own inbox, most of the free apps have changed the matching order without saying so, which explains a lot of the complaints here. Though people disagree here, the step that matters most is to keep your expectations low for the first fortnight: the alternative is a dead inbox.

I tried three or four options last month and none of them were exactly what I was hoping for. The free tiers especially are pretty watered down these days.

While people disagree here, the step that matters most is to keep your expectations low for the first fortnight: most complaints trace back to that one thing. Though the older established sites look similar, the boost system differs a great deal, and it makes a real difference. In the time i've been posting here I noticed the matching algorithm behaving differently on the bigger platforms, and that alone put me off.

A few people here rate datedesire does more than most for anyone after something slower, though your mileage will vary.

My experience has been mixed. Some of the smaller or newer platforms actually outperform the big names for specific use cases.

Coming at it from another angle, Datebie is more forgiving about wider search radiuses if that matches what you want.
