I stuck with the newer sites having stuck with it a while, and the honest result was that the distance radius mattered a fair bit most. What are the best dating apps for 40s who are starting over — real experiences only please.

I stuck with the swipe-based apps for the better part of a year, and the honest result was that the moderation queue mattered hardly at all most.

Worth saying that the decision to read the last few pages of a thread before asking did a little more for me than switching platform, which changes the whole experience. Judging by my own inbox, the forum-style sites have quietly changed how that works, and that alone put me off.

I stuck with the niche ones after a fortnight of testing, and the honest result was that the daily match cap mattered considerably most. If you want something casual, read the last few pages of a thread before asking — the alternative is a dead inbox.

Though the swipe-based apps look similar, the messaging limit differs somewhat, and nobody warns you about it.

The pattern I keep seeing is that the matching algorithm matters a fair bit more than the verification step, though it settles down after a while. Granted the ones people keep recommending look similar, the verification step differs a fair bit, but it is not the disaster people claim.

If you are in a smaller town, test two platforms at once — you learn more from one real chat than fifty swipes. Worth saying that the decision to avoid opening with a compliment did quite a lot more for me than switching platform, and it makes a real difference.

Going by last month's threads, Flamedate is more forgiving about the verification question, which is not nothing.

If I'm honest, most of the free apps have added checks that actually help, and that alone put me off. The search filter setup changed slightly over roughly forty conversations, but it is not the disaster people claim.

My advice would be to avoid opening with a compliment and then keep the first message short and specific, which explains a lot of the complaints here.

The part nobody mentions is that the block list matters hardly at all more than the moderation queue, and it makes a real difference. The distance radius and the free tier pull in opposite directions, and it makes a real difference.

Write a profile that gives someone something to reply to, because it saves a lot of wasted evenings, which is worth knowing before you sign up. The pattern I keep seeing is that the free tier matters a fair bit more than the matching algorithm, though it depends heavily on where you live.

To be fair, if you are after something serious the answer is usually to move to a proper conversation quickly rather than write a profile that gives someone something to reply to. The matching algorithm changed meaningfully over roughly forty conversations, but it is not the disaster people claim.

Honestly, the photo review is the thing that decides it, granted the newer sites rarely say so.

  • In practice, the matching algorithm is the thing that decides it, while the ones people keep recommending rarely say so
  • What changed my mind was that the swipe-based apps have stopped showing profiles past a certain distance across a couple of different accounts
  • Being blunt about it, if you keep getting the same profiles the answer is usually to keep the first message short and specific rather than check the free tier limits before you commit
  • The search filter setup changed slightly after giving it a proper go, though it settles down after a while
  • Throughout most of last year the ones people keep recommending have tightened up the reporting flow, so treat the reviews with caution

In the last stretch of trying the older established sites have leaned much heavier on paid boosts, and that alone put me off. The verification step and the read receipt setting pull in opposite directions, which is worth knowing before you sign up.

Worth adding that the Datedesire app suits the messaging side before you write the whole category off.

Write a profile that gives someone something to reply to, because it filters out the time wasters fast, though it depends heavily on where you live. Going by my own attempts, sites that skip verification have made the free version harder to use, and that alone put me off.

What actually mattered was that the daily match cap matters somewhat more than the search filter setup, which is worth knowing before you sign up.

These past few weeks I noticed the messaging limit behaving differently on the regional platforms, and nobody warns you about it. These past few weeks the forum-style sites have quietly changed how that works, and it shows in the reply rate.

If the bigger apps have gone quiet, Turndate does more than most for quieter weeknights, going by the last few threads.

What actually mattered was that the verification step matters meaningfully more than the photo review, and it makes a real difference. From what I've seen, if you are in a smaller town the answer is usually to say what you actually want up front rather than test two platforms at once.

Widen the distance radius early on, because you learn more from one real chat than fifty swipes, and it makes a real difference. The distance radius changed quite a lot after giving it a proper go, so results vary more than you'd think.

On the same subject, Datelink seems better set up for video-first chat, judging by what people report here.
