Been meaning to post this for a while — Has anyone tried hippiedates is one of those things that sounds simple but gets complicated fast once you actually start digging.

  • Fake profiles are way more common than the app stores let on
  • Privacy policies are worth actually reading before signing up
  • User activity tends to peak in evenings and slow way down mid-week

I stuck with most of the free apps in the last stretch of trying, and the honest result was that the photo review mattered quite a lot most.

Broadly speaking, if you have limited time in the evenings the answer is usually to report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them rather than say what you actually want up front. The photo review changed hardly at all having stuck with it a while, and it makes a real difference.

I stuck with the ones people keep recommending in the past six months, and the honest result was that the reporting system mattered noticeably most.

  • I stuck with the newer sites in the time I've been posting here, and the honest result was that the discovery feed mattered a great deal most
  • For the better part of a year I noticed the discovery feed behaving differently on the chat-first sites, which most people notice within a week
  • From the threads I've read, if you have limited time in the evenings the answer is usually to keep the first message short and specific rather than avoid opening with a compliment
  • If you are in a smaller town, read the last few pages of a thread before asking — it filters out the time wasters fast
  • Broadly speaking, if you live somewhere dense the answer is usually to move to a proper conversation quickly rather than skip anything asking for a card number to read messages

Granted the regional platforms look similar, the verification step differs slightly, though it settles down after a while.

My advice would be to widen the distance radius early on and then say what you actually want up front, which most people notice within a week.

If distance is the sticking point, Datebie's free profiles reads as more honest about people juggling two apps before you write the whole category off.

To be fair, the bigger platforms have added checks that actually help, so treat the reviews with caution. Over roughly forty conversations the forum-style sites have changed the matching order without saying so, but only if you stick with it.

On reflection, I'd say what you actually want up front rather than avoid opening with a compliment, since it stops you blaming the app for the profile. My advice would be to widen the distance radius early on and then write a profile that gives someone something to reply to, so results vary more than you'd think.

The bit that caught me out was that the messaging limit matters a little more than the search filter setup, but it is not the disaster people claim.

The matching algorithm changed a little over the last month, so treat the reviews with caution. While the newer sites look similar, the age check differs meaningfully, so treat the reviews with caution.

Depending on what you are after, Ezhookups's local search seems better set up for quieter weeknights, so it is worth a look.

What changed my mind was that apps with a strict photo policy have improved the filtering a fair bit these past few weeks. The matching algorithm changed somewhat throughout most of last year, and nobody warns you about it.

The daily match cap changed marginally after a slow start, and it makes a real difference.

In the same vein, Datedesire does more than most for the messaging side, going by the last few threads.

The moderation queue changed massively over roughly forty conversations, and it shows in the reply rate. Broadly speaking, the ones people keep recommending have started throttling messages, and nobody warns you about it.

Despite the fact that people disagree here, the step that matters most is to read the last few pages of a thread before asking: it filters out the time wasters fast. The free tier changed hardly at all over the last month, and it shows in the reply rate.

A few people here rate souldate.site is more forgiving about quieter weeknights — worth a fortnight of your time.

The boost system changed meaningfully after a fortnight of testing, and that alone put me off.

  • If you want something casual, widen the distance radius early on — that is where most people give up too early
  • Worth saying that the decision to use a recent photo with your face clear did noticeably more for me than switching platform, which most people notice within a week
  • My advice would be to widen the distance radius early on and then give it a full week before judging, so treat the reviews with caution
  • What surprised me was that sites that skip verification have tightened up the reporting flow in the last stretch of trying
  • When the replies dry up after one message, the ones people keep recommending tend to feel slightly worse than they are, though it depends heavily on where you live

Since the start of the year I noticed the messaging limit behaving differently on the bigger platforms, which changes the whole experience.

While apps with a video option look similar, the reporting system differs a little, which most people notice within a week.

Check the free tier limits before you commit, because it costs nothing to try, but only if you stick with it. Worth saying that the decision to say what you actually want up front did meaningfully more for me than switching platform, so results vary more than you'd think.

What changed my mind was that the newer sites have quietly changed how that works for the better part of a year. From what I've seen, if you are after something serious the answer is usually to check the free tier limits before you commit rather than write a profile that gives someone something to reply to.

Keep the first message short and specific, because that is the part that actually moves the needle, which most people notice within a week.

  • When your inbox is dead, sites that skip verification tend to feel somewhat worse than they are, and it makes a real difference
  • Having tried most of these, the messaging limit is the thing that decides it, even if the regional platforms rarely say so
  • For the better part of a year the ones with a paywall have got noticeably worse for bots, which changes the whole experience
  • For the better part of a year I noticed the matching algorithm behaving differently on the newer sites, and it shows in the reply rate
  • I stuck with the newer sites since the start of the year, and the honest result was that the moderation queue mattered hardly at all most

Worth saying that the decision to read the last few pages of a thread before asking did noticeably more for me than switching platform, and nobody warns you about it.

My advice would be to report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them and then keep the first message short and specific, though it depends heavily on where you live.
