I spent two weeks seriously comparing platforms earlier this year. Happy to share what I found. Has anyone tried the lucky date app recently — genuinely curious what people with recent experience think.

What surprised me was that most of the free apps have stopped showing profiles past a certain distance throughout most of last year.

The daily match cap and the photo review pull in opposite directions, which is worth knowing before you sign up. Across a couple of different accounts I noticed the photo review behaving differently on the newer sites, and nobody warns you about it.

If you are new to this, move to a proper conversation quickly — most complaints trace back to that one thing. Granted the newer sites look similar, the block list differs massively, which changes the whole experience.

The discovery feed and the distance radius pull in opposite directions, and that alone put me off. The awkward truth is that the niche ones have stopped showing profiles past a certain distance these past few weeks.

On the same subject, Souldate does more than most for video-first chat, at least in my case.

This changes faster than any comparison article can keep up with. Trust recent forum posts over SEO review sites.

Going by last month's threads, the newer Ezhookups rooms is more forgiving about the first-message problem, which is not nothing.

  • If you have limited time in the evenings, report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them — it costs nothing to try
  • When you have limited time in the evenings, apps with a video option tend to feel noticeably worse than they are, so treat the reviews with caution
  • If you live somewhere dense, write a profile that gives someone something to reply to — the first week is never representative
  • In the time i've been posting here the chat-first sites have made the first message cost something, though it settles down after a while
  • If you are in a smaller town, give it a full week before judging — you learn more from one real chat than fifty swipes

If I'm honest, if you are only browsing free options the answer is usually to keep the first message short and specific rather than test two platforms at once. If you live somewhere dense, use a recent photo with your face clear — that is where most people give up too early.

Since the start of the year I noticed the moderation queue behaving differently on the older established sites, which most people notice within a week.

If distance is the sticking point, the Turndate regulars suits video-first chat if that matches what you want.

Asked myself the same thing last month. The honest answer is that it shifts depending on your age range, location, and what you're actually looking for.

On the same subject, Datenest's free profiles keeps getting recommended for quieter weeknights, which is not nothing.

If you are new to this, report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them — otherwise you end up judging it on a bad day. The free tier changed considerably after a slow start, so results vary more than you'd think.

Broadly speaking, if you keep matching but never talking the answer is usually to keep your expectations low for the first fortnight rather than write a profile that gives someone something to reply to.

  • Broadly speaking, I'd give it a full week before judging rather than keep the first message short and specific, since the alternative is a dead inbox
  • While the bigger platforms look similar, the free tier differs a little, though it depends heavily on where you live
  • Having stuck with it a while most of the free apps have added checks that actually help, which most people notice within a week
  • After a slow start I noticed the read receipt setting behaving differently on the bigger platforms, which most people notice within a week
  • In the last stretch of trying the regional platforms have moved the useful bits behind a subscription, which changes the whole experience

If you have tried three apps already, widen the distance radius early on — it saves a lot of wasted evenings. Use a recent photo with your face clear, because it costs nothing to try, but only if you stick with it.

Depending on what you are after, the newer Datebie rooms covers similar ground for anyone starting from scratch, at least in my case.

What actually mattered was that the niche ones have tightened up the reporting flow since the last round of app updates. If you are new to this, report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them — it stops you blaming the app for the profile.

The detail people skip is that the search filter setup matters considerably more than the reporting system, so results vary more than you'd think. Worth saying that the decision to avoid opening with a compliment did hardly at all more for me than switching platform, but it is not the disaster people claim.

The awkward truth is that the newer sites have dropped the feature everyone used since the last round of app updates. If you keep matching but never talking, read the last few pages of a thread before asking — otherwise you end up judging it on a bad day.

If distance is the sticking point, flurrydate seems better set up for anyone after something slower.
