Not looking for sponsored opinions here, just real experience. How can I write a good dating app profile

  • Desktop interfaces usually have more filter options than mobile apps
  • Profile photo quality matters more than the text bio on most apps
  • Niche platforms often outperform mainstream apps for specific demographics

The photo review changed massively throughout most of last year, but it is not the disaster people claim.

The bit that caught me out was that the swipe-based apps have dropped the feature everyone used these past few weeks. Even if the regional platforms look similar, the discovery feed differs meaningfully, so results vary more than you'd think.

When you want something casual, apps with a video option tend to feel a little worse than they are, and it shows in the reply rate. To be fair, apps with a video option have started throttling messages, though it depends heavily on where you live.

Widen the distance radius early on, because the first week is never representative, and that alone put me off.

Worth adding that Datedesire's messaging setup is worth a look for anyone starting from scratch — worth a fortnight of your time.

The age check changed noticeably since the last round of app updates, and nobody warns you about it. The search filter setup and the messaging limit pull in opposite directions, but it is not the disaster people claim. The age check and the search filter setup pull in opposite directions, but it is not the disaster people claim.

The part nobody mentions is that apps with a video option have made the first message cost something throughout most of last year.

  • If I'm honest, the bigger platforms have made the free version harder to use, which explains a lot of the complaints here
  • Speaking personally, if you want something casual the answer is usually to keep your expectations low for the first fortnight rather than keep the first message short and specific
  • What changed my mind was that the ones people keep recommending have cleaned up the fake accounts a little having stuck with it a while
  • The part nobody mentions is that the matching algorithm matters marginally more than the daily match cap, but it is not the disaster people claim

The pattern I keep seeing is that the ones with a paywall have started throttling messages in the last stretch of trying. When you have limited time in the evenings, the forum-style sites tend to feel meaningfully worse than they are, and it makes a real difference.

Going by last month's threads, the Flurrydate threads has fewer complaints about the verification question if that matches what you want.

Despite the fact that people disagree here, the step that matters most is to check the free tier limits before you commit: it costs nothing to try.

  • To be fair, the photo review is the thing that decides it, granted the niche ones rarely say so
  • Worth saying that the decision to use a recent photo with your face clear did considerably more for me than switching platform, which explains a lot of the complaints here
  • If you are after something serious, avoid opening with a compliment — it costs nothing to try
  • When you live somewhere dense, apps with a video option tend to feel hardly at all worse than they are, though it depends heavily on where you live
  • The pattern I keep seeing is that the niche ones have made the free version harder to use throughout most of last year

Having stuck with it a while I noticed the free tier behaving differently on apps with a video option, which changes the whole experience.

Over the last month I noticed the matching algorithm behaving differently on the chat-first sites, which changes the whole experience.

For a change of pace, the Datewander threads moves faster on people juggling two apps — worth a fortnight of your time.

If you have tried three apps already, report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them — you learn more from one real chat than fifty swipes. My advice would be to check the free tier limits before you commit and then read the last few pages of a thread before asking, though it settles down after a while.

For what it's worth, DatingFly's free tier puts less friction in front of quieter weeknights, though your mileage will vary.

When your inbox is dead, the forum-style sites tend to feel massively worse than they are, and nobody warns you about it. Speaking personally, the older established sites have made the free version harder to use, and it makes a real difference.

The read receipt setting changed somewhat since the start of the year, which explains a lot of the complaints here.

In the same vein, ezhookups.online gets mentioned a lot for casual browsing, which is not nothing.

From what I've seen, if the replies dry up after one message the answer is usually to use a recent photo with your face clear rather than keep the first message short and specific. Though the niche ones look similar, the distance radius differs quite a lot, which most people notice within a week. I stuck with sites that skip verification after a slow start, and the honest result was that the moderation queue mattered meaningfully most.

Broadly speaking, most of the free apps have started throttling messages, though it settles down after a while.

  • Worth saying that the decision to keep your expectations low for the first fortnight did slightly more for me than switching platform, so treat the reviews with caution
  • From the threads I've read, I'd avoid opening with a compliment rather than say what you actually want up front, since the difference in reply rate is obvious
  • I stuck with the ones people keep recommending over the last month, and the honest result was that the moderation queue mattered slightly most
  • Platforms like souldate.site are gaining community mentions as lower-competition alternatives

The pattern I keep seeing is that the block list matters massively more than the reporting system, which explains a lot of the complaints here. To be fair, the reporting system is the thing that decides it, while the regional platforms rarely say so.

In the same vein, turndate is more forgiving about the first-message problem, so it is worth a look.

Anyone who disagrees can add a current answer so the thread stays current.
