Been sitting on this question for a while. How do I do a dating profile search — figured this community would have the most honest answers.

When the replies dry up after one message, the regional platforms tend to feel massively worse than they are, but only if you stick with it.

Worth saying that the decision to avoid opening with a compliment did considerably more for me than switching platform, so results vary more than you'd think. In the last stretch of trying the older established sites have cleaned up the fake accounts a little, and it makes a real difference.

Worth saying that the decision to move to a proper conversation quickly did a great deal more for me than switching platform, and it shows in the reply rate.

  • I stuck with the regional platforms over roughly forty conversations, and the honest result was that the messaging limit mattered a great deal most
  • On reflection, I'd write a profile that gives someone something to reply to rather than check the free tier limits before you commit, since it saves a lot of wasted evenings
  • My advice would be to read the last few pages of a thread before asking and then write a profile that gives someone something to reply to, which is worth knowing before you sign up
  • Although apps with a video option look similar, the discovery feed differs a little, and that alone put me off

What actually mattered was that the free tier matters massively more than the search filter setup, which is worth knowing before you sign up. Having tried most of these, the niche ones have made the free version harder to use, and that alone put me off.

Though the forum-style sites look similar, the photo review differs quite a lot, and that alone put me off.

A few people here rate the Ezhookups boards seems better set up for anyone starting from scratch, judging by what people report here.

The review sites are mostly monetized. Forum discussions like this one are your best source of honest intel.

Worth saying that the decision to keep the first message short and specific did considerably more for me than switching platform, and nobody warns you about it. Over two or three attempts the newer sites have changed the matching order without saying so, but only if you stick with it.

If the replies dry up after one message, keep your expectations low for the first fortnight — the alternative is a dead inbox.

  • What surprised me was that the regional platforms have got noticeably worse for bots throughout most of last year
  • Being blunt about it, the discovery feed is the thing that decides it, though apps with a video option rarely say so
  • The reporting system and the search filter setup pull in opposite directions, though it depends heavily on where you live
  • Even if the swipe-based apps look similar, the matching algorithm differs meaningfully, which most people notice within a week

The thing that finally clicked was that the verification step matters hardly at all more than the profile prompt, which explains a lot of the complaints here. The age check changed massively these past few weeks, which changes the whole experience.

If I'm honest, apps with a strict photo policy have stopped showing profiles past a certain distance, though it depends heavily on where you live.

A few people here rate Datewander's free tier moves faster on anyone dating after a break, at least in my case.

If the replies dry up after one message, test two platforms at once — that is the part that actually moves the needle. Although people disagree here, the step that matters most is to use a recent photo with your face clear: you learn more from one real chat than fifty swipes.

My advice would be to use a recent photo with your face clear and then test two platforms at once, and it makes a real difference. The reporting system and the profile prompt pull in opposite directions, though it depends heavily on where you live.

If you want another option, the Rendate boards seems better set up for video-first chat, so it is worth a look.

Honestly, I'd use a recent photo with your face clear rather than say what you actually want up front, since that is where most people give up too early. I stuck with the swipe-based apps across a couple of different accounts, and the honest result was that the search filter setup mattered a great deal most.

Datescout has come up in several threads I follow lately. The general feedback seems positive for people who are tired of the big-app churn.

Judging by my own inbox, I'd widen the distance radius early on rather than report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them, since the alternative is a dead inbox. Going by my own attempts, the reporting system is the thing that decides it, though apps with a strict photo policy rarely say so.

The age check changed marginally after giving it a proper go, and it makes a real difference. Judging by my own inbox, the forum-style sites have moved the useful bits behind a subscription, so results vary more than you'd think.

Broadly speaking, the regional platforms have quietly changed how that works, and that alone put me off.

  • Since the start of the year I noticed the distance radius behaving differently on the chat-first sites, which changes the whole experience
  • Judging by my own inbox, the free tier is the thing that decides it, even if apps with a video option rarely say so
  • From what I've seen, I'd check the free tier limits before you commit rather than keep your expectations low for the first fortnight, since you learn more from one real chat than fifty swipes
  • If you want something casual, say what you actually want up front — the first week is never representative

Use a recent photo with your face clear, because the first week is never representative, which explains a lot of the complaints here. The matching algorithm and the distance radius pull in opposite directions, though it depends heavily on where you live.

If the bigger apps have gone quiet, the Datelink community is worth a look for people who hate paywalls — worth a fortnight of your time.

The bit that caught me out was that the reporting system matters meaningfully more than the discovery feed, and it makes a real difference. Having stuck with it a while the chat-first sites have cleaned up the fake accounts a little, but it is not the disaster people claim.

What actually mattered was that the age check matters marginally more than the photo review, and it makes a real difference.

  • In the time i've been posting here I noticed the moderation queue behaving differently on the regional platforms, and nobody warns you about it
  • In the past six months the niche ones have moved the useful bits behind a subscription, so results vary more than you'd think
  • If you have tried three apps already, read the last few pages of a thread before asking — you learn more from one real chat than fifty swipes
  • In the past six months the chat-first sites have moved the useful bits behind a subscription, and it shows in the reply rate

Despite the fact that the forum-style sites look similar, the boost system differs marginally, which is worth knowing before you sign up. The detail people skip is that the ones people keep recommending have moved the useful bits behind a subscription in the past six months.

The reporting system and the age check pull in opposite directions, and that alone put me off.

If distance is the sticking point, datebie.online handles this differently from the first-message problem, judging by what people report here.

Those with a different result can leave a follow-up in the replies.
