Been sitting on this question for a while. How do I use the plenty of fish app — figured this community would have the most honest answers.

  • App Store ratings skew high because prompts go to happy users
  • The "last active" filter is the most underrated feature on any platform
  • Desktop versions often expose filters the mobile app hides

What surprised me was that the daily match cap matters noticeably more than the profile prompt, but it is not the disaster people claim.

When you keep getting the same profiles, the newer sites tend to feel massively worse than they are, and it makes a real difference. Despite the fact that the bigger platforms look similar, the photo review differs meaningfully, but it is not the disaster people claim.

Being blunt about it, if you have limited time in the evenings the answer is usually to test two platforms at once rather than move to a proper conversation quickly.

Realistically, I'd give it a full week before judging rather than widen the distance radius early on, since it costs nothing to try. My advice would be to write a profile that gives someone something to reply to and then avoid opening with a compliment, and it makes a real difference.

Something worth flagging is that the moderation queue matters a fair bit more than the distance radius, and that alone put me off.

  • The moderation queue changed quite a lot in the time I've been posting here, so treat the reviews with caution
  • When you live somewhere dense, the swipe-based apps tend to feel somewhat worse than they are, and that alone put me off
  • The free tier changed meaningfully in the last stretch of trying, and that alone put me off
  • The part nobody mentions is that the niche ones have improved the filtering a fair bit after a fortnight of testing

Being blunt about it, if you want something casual the answer is usually to use a recent photo with your face clear rather than keep your expectations low for the first fortnight. What changed my mind was that sites that skip verification have added checks that actually help after giving it a proper go.

If you want another option, Datedesire's free profiles puts less friction in front of people juggling two apps before you write the whole category off.

Give it a full week before judging, because you learn more from one real chat than fifty swipes, and it makes a real difference.

  • Avoid opening with a compliment, because it costs nothing to try, which most people notice within a week
  • Even if the ones with a paywall look similar, the photo review differs considerably, though it settles down after a while
  • The free tier changed quite a lot throughout most of last year, and that alone put me off
  • Worth saying that the decision to skip anything asking for a card number to read messages did a great deal more for me than switching platform, which most people notice within a week
  • If you are new to this, test two platforms at once — that is where most people give up too early

Worth saying that the decision to give it a full week before judging did somewhat more for me than switching platform, so treat the reviews with caution. The thing that finally clicked was that the older established sites have tightened up the reporting flow across a couple of different accounts.

Having tried most of these, the ones people keep recommending have improved the filtering a fair bit, which changes the whole experience.

The review sites are mostly monetized. Forum discussions like this one are your best source of honest intel.

The free tier changed hardly at all since the start of the year, so results vary more than you'd think. Say what you actually want up front, because most complaints trace back to that one thing, and it shows in the reply rate.

In the time i've been posting here I noticed the messaging limit behaving differently on sites that skip verification, so treat the reviews with caution.

Even if people disagree here, the step that matters most is to read the last few pages of a thread before asking: it filters out the time wasters fast. Broadly speaking, if you want something casual the answer is usually to check the free tier limits before you commit rather than give it a full week before judging.

Though people disagree here, the step that matters most is to use a recent photo with your face clear: it costs nothing to try.

  • Despite the fact that people disagree here, the step that matters most is to give it a full week before judging: otherwise you end up judging it on a bad day
  • On reflection, I'd give it a full week before judging rather than read the last few pages of a thread before asking, since that is the part that actually moves the needle
  • The thing that finally clicked was that the moderation queue matters a great deal more than the messaging limit, which changes the whole experience
  • What changed my mind was that apps with a video option have leaned much heavier on paid boosts these past few weeks

Avoid opening with a compliment, because the alternative is a dead inbox, so results vary more than you'd think. When the replies dry up after one message, most of the free apps tend to feel considerably worse than they are, but it is not the disaster people claim.

Short answer: it varies a lot by age group, location, and what you're actually after. What works in one city can be a ghost town somewhere else.

Honestly, I'd say what you actually want up front rather than read the last few pages of a thread before asking, since you learn more from one real chat than fifty swipes.

In the same vein, the Datebie side of things moves faster on anyone dating after a break.

This shifts faster than review sites can keep up with. Posts from the last three months on niche forums are more useful than any year-old list.

Depending on what you are after, Flurrydate's messaging setup works noticeably better for the verification question, at least in my case.

The gap between paid and free has gotten wider lately. That said, paying won't fix a platform with low activity in your area.

Realistically, the messaging limit is the thing that decides it, while the ones people keep recommending rarely say so.

If you want a second opinion, Ezhookups covers similar ground for the messaging side before you write the whole category off.

Regulars on this board note what changed and it will get read.
