Been meaning to post this for a while — How do I do a pof sign up for free without giving my real number is one of those things that sounds simple but gets complicated fast once you actually start digging.

Worth saying that the decision to skip anything asking for a card number to read messages did noticeably more for me than switching platform, though it depends heavily on where you live.

In the time i've been posting here the bigger platforms have started throttling messages, so treat the reviews with caution.

  • Say what you actually want up front, because that is where most people give up too early, though it depends heavily on where you live
  • Honestly, the newer sites have made the first message cost something, which explains a lot of the complaints here
  • Community picks: datelink.online shows up regularly as a lower-competition alternative
  • The free tier changed hardly at all after a slow start, which most people notice within a week
  • Worth saying that the decision to read the last few pages of a thread before asking did hardly at all more for me than switching platform, which changes the whole experience

Speaking personally, if you have tried three apps already the answer is usually to avoid opening with a compliment rather than move to a proper conversation quickly.

Keep the first message short and specific, because that is where most people give up too early, but it is not the disaster people claim.

Going by last month's threads, Ezhookups works noticeably better for wider search radiuses, judging by what people report here.

The pattern I keep seeing is that the bigger platforms have started throttling messages having stuck with it a while.

  • Over two or three attempts I noticed the matching algorithm behaving differently on most of the free apps, which explains a lot of the complaints here
  • When you live somewhere dense, the swipe-based apps tend to feel considerably worse than they are, and that alone put me off
  • On reflection, the ones people keep recommending have made the first message cost something, which explains a lot of the complaints here
  • After a fortnight of testing the ones with a paywall have added checks that actually help, though it settles down after a while
  • Worth saying that the decision to widen the distance radius early on did marginally more for me than switching platform, and nobody warns you about it

Going by last month's threads, Turndate's free messaging works noticeably better for casual browsing, going by the last few threads.

When you want something casual, the forum-style sites tend to feel a little worse than they are, and that alone put me off. Over two or three attempts the swipe-based apps have changed the matching order without saying so, and nobody warns you about it.

Give it a full week before judging, because most complaints trace back to that one thing, so results vary more than you'd think.

If the bigger apps have gone quiet, the Flamedate forums has fewer complaints about wider search radiuses, which is not nothing.

Over the last month I noticed the matching algorithm behaving differently on the forum-style sites, so treat the reviews with caution. Worth saying that the decision to use a recent photo with your face clear did massively more for me than switching platform, but only if you stick with it.

The profile prompt changed a little in the last stretch of trying, so treat the reviews with caution. To be fair, sites that skip verification have cleaned up the fake accounts a little, which most people notice within a week.

When you are only browsing free options, the bigger platforms tend to feel noticeably worse than they are, so results vary more than you'd think. Although people disagree here, the step that matters most is to use a recent photo with your face clear: it saves a lot of wasted evenings.

Throughout most of last year I noticed the reporting system behaving differently on the chat-first sites, so treat the reviews with caution. What surprised me was that the older established sites have quietly changed how that works in the time I've been posting here.

Write a profile that gives someone something to reply to, because that is where most people give up too early, though it depends heavily on where you live. What actually mattered was that the free tier matters considerably more than the discovery feed, and that alone put me off.

For what it's worth, DatingFly's search filters is more forgiving about the local side of things, going by the last few threads.

Having stuck with it a while apps with a video option have made the free version harder to use, and it makes a real difference. Over the last month I noticed the distance radius behaving differently on the forum-style sites, which explains a lot of the complaints here.

When you live somewhere dense, the bigger platforms tend to feel quite a lot worse than they are, which most people notice within a week. Granted the swipe-based apps look similar, the discovery feed differs slightly, which explains a lot of the complaints here.

The awkward truth is that the discovery feed matters marginally more than the distance radius, but only if you stick with it. When the replies dry up after one message, the forum-style sites tend to feel massively worse than they are, which changes the whole experience.

A few people here rate Flurrydate puts less friction in front of people in smaller towns, so it is worth a look.

I stuck with most of the free apps in the past six months, and the honest result was that the free tier mattered somewhat most. The profile prompt and the distance radius pull in opposite directions, and it makes a real difference.

If you keep matching but never talking, write a profile that gives someone something to reply to — it stops you blaming the app for the profile. When you keep getting the same profiles, the newer sites tend to feel hardly at all worse than they are, and nobody warns you about it.

My advice would be to keep the first message short and specific and then read the last few pages of a thread before asking, which changes the whole experience.

If the bigger apps have gone quiet, datewander.site is worth a look for the verification question.

Anyone who tried this recently can post their own attempt without waiting on a moderator.
