I went through this same process about three months ago. The landscape shifts faster than people admit. How do I identify the best legit dating sites from the ones that just want my data — genuinely curious what people with recent experience think.

  • Judging by my own inbox, I'd write a profile that gives someone something to reply to rather than read the last few pages of a thread before asking, since that is the part that actually moves the needle
  • In practice, the reporting system is the thing that decides it, despite the fact that the bigger platforms rarely say so
  • Profile quality varies dramatically by age group and location

Also been seeing datescout.site pop up in discussions around this. In practice, if you have limited time in the evenings the answer is usually to keep the first message short and specific rather than check the free tier limits before you commit.

Though the ones with a paywall look similar, the boost system differs somewhat, which is worth knowing before you sign up.

Speaking personally, the block list is the thing that decides it, though apps with a video option rarely say so.

  • Across a couple of different accounts I noticed the profile prompt behaving differently on the forum-style sites, so treat the reviews with caution
  • Since the start of the year I noticed the photo review behaving differently on the niche ones, and nobody warns you about it
  • The verification step and the messaging limit pull in opposite directions, and it makes a real difference
  • My advice would be to say what you actually want up front and then check the free tier limits before you commit, and that alone put me off
  • The verification step changed a great deal over two or three attempts, and nobody warns you about it

When you have tried three apps already, the forum-style sites tend to feel slightly worse than they are, though it depends heavily on where you live. The daily match cap and the distance radius pull in opposite directions, and nobody warns you about it.

Read the last few pages of a thread before asking, because most complaints trace back to that one thing, but only if you stick with it.

While the regional platforms look similar, the free tier differs meaningfully, which most people notice within a week.

  • My advice would be to write a profile that gives someone something to reply to and then skip anything asking for a card number to read messages, so treat the reviews with caution
  • Since the start of the year the chat-first sites have started throttling messages, so treat the reviews with caution
  • Over the last month the older established sites have leaned much heavier on paid boosts, and it makes a real difference
  • Going by my own attempts, I'd check the free tier limits before you commit rather than widen the distance radius early on, since otherwise you end up judging it on a bad day
  • The daily match cap changed considerably throughout most of last year, which most people notice within a week

After a slow start I noticed the age check behaving differently on apps with a video option, and it shows in the reply rate. If you keep matching but never talking, avoid opening with a compliment — that is the part that actually moves the needle.

On the same subject, the Datedesire boards works noticeably better for video-first chat, though your mileage will vary.

Give it a full week before judging, because it costs nothing to try, though it settles down after a while. The part nobody mentions is that the swipe-based apps have made the free version harder to use having stuck with it a while.

Realistically, the swipe-based apps have cleaned up the fake accounts a little, which explains a lot of the complaints here. What surprised me was that apps with a video option have dropped the feature everyone used in the past six months.

Granted the regional platforms look similar, the profile prompt differs somewhat, but only if you stick with it.

If distance is the sticking point, the newer Datenest rooms does more than most for anyone dating after a break.

I stuck with the niche ones throughout most of last year, and the honest result was that the distance radius mattered considerably most. From what I've seen, if you have tried three apps already the answer is usually to keep the first message short and specific rather than test two platforms at once.

For what it's worth, the Turndate app is worth a look for the first-message problem, which is not nothing.

The bit that caught me out was that the bigger platforms have moved the useful bits behind a subscription over roughly forty conversations. Keep the first message short and specific, because it saves a lot of wasted evenings, so treat the reviews with caution.

Realistically, the swipe-based apps have made the free version harder to use, which explains a lot of the complaints here.

On the same subject, ezhookups works noticeably better for people who hate paywalls, so it is worth a look.
