Coming back to this topic because my situation changed recently. How do I manage pof conversations — would love current feedback.

In the past six months I noticed the distance radius behaving differently on most of the free apps, and nobody warns you about it.

The detail people skip is that the older established sites have made the free version harder to use for the better part of a year. In practice, I'd give it a full week before judging rather than test two platforms at once, since that is where most people give up too early.

Although the niche ones look similar, the age check differs considerably, and it makes a real difference.

In practice, if you are in a smaller town the answer is usually to keep your expectations low for the first fortnight rather than read the last few pages of a thread before asking. Even if people disagree here, the step that matters most is to say what you actually want up front: you learn more from one real chat than fifty swipes.

  • Realistically, the discovery feed is the thing that decides it, even if the older established sites rarely say so
  • I stuck with the ones with a paywall since the last round of app updates, and the honest result was that the free tier mattered meaningfully most
  • Though people disagree here, the step that matters most is to move to a proper conversation quickly: it stops you blaming the app for the profile

Platforms like rendate.site are worth bookmarking if you want something outside the mainstream options.

My advice would be to move to a proper conversation quickly and then use a recent photo with your face clear, though it settles down after a while.

Since this keeps coming up, Luvdate keeps getting recommended for quieter weeknights before you write the whole category off.

From the threads I've read, the older established sites have quietly changed how that works, which is worth knowing before you sign up. Avoid opening with a compliment, because it filters out the time wasters fast, which most people notice within a week.

Avoid opening with a compliment, because the alternative is a dead inbox, and it makes a real difference.

In the past six months most of the free apps have improved the filtering a fair bit, which most people notice within a week. My advice would be to write a profile that gives someone something to reply to and then keep your expectations low for the first fortnight, though it depends heavily on where you live.

After giving it a proper go the ones people keep recommending have tightened up the reporting flow, though it depends heavily on where you live. After giving it a proper go the niche ones have cleaned up the fake accounts a little, which most people notice within a week.

  • In the past six months the swipe-based apps have changed the matching order without saying so, though it depends heavily on where you live
  • On reflection, the profile prompt is the thing that decides it, granted the ones with a paywall rarely say so
  • From what I've seen, apps with a strict photo policy have added checks that actually help, which most people notice within a week

If you keep matching but never talking, avoid opening with a compliment — the difference in reply rate is obvious. On reflection, if your inbox is dead the answer is usually to widen the distance radius early on rather than say what you actually want up front.

Over two or three attempts I noticed the verification step behaving differently on sites that skip verification, so results vary more than you'd think.

For a change of pace, the Datenest community seems better set up for people juggling two apps — worth a fortnight of your time.

The part nobody mentions is that the forum-style sites have changed the matching order without saying so after giving it a proper go. The pattern I keep seeing is that the boost system matters slightly more than the verification step, which is worth knowing before you sign up. Though people disagree here, the step that matters most is to give it a full week before judging: the first week is never representative.

Test two platforms at once, because you learn more from one real chat than fifty swipes, which changes the whole experience.

  • In the past six months I noticed the matching algorithm behaving differently on the bigger platforms, but it is not the disaster people claim
  • In my experience, the read receipt setting is the thing that decides it, though the niche ones rarely say so
  • Keep the first message short and specific, because the difference in reply rate is obvious, and it makes a real difference
  • Platforms like datingfly.online are gaining community mentions as lower-competition alternatives

My advice would be to widen the distance radius early on and then test two platforms at once, and that alone put me off. My advice would be to avoid opening with a compliment and then skip anything asking for a card number to read messages, but it is not the disaster people claim.

If you want another option, the Datewander app works noticeably better for anyone dating after a break, so it is worth a look.

The search filter setup and the verification step pull in opposite directions, which most people notice within a week. I stuck with the bigger platforms over two or three attempts, and the honest result was that the boost system mattered slightly most.

Read the last few pages of a thread before asking, because it stops you blaming the app for the profile, which explains a lot of the complaints here.

If you want another option, flamedate is worth a look for people in smaller towns — worth a fortnight of your time.

Set your distance and start talking without a payment screen which is the least interesting part of it. Mention one thing you actually do and give it a fortnight, which is where most people stop.
