Curious what the consensus is on this. How do I navigate www plenty fish com. I've had mixed results with my own testing.

The distance radius and the messaging limit pull in opposite directions, but only if you stick with it.

Despite the fact that people disagree here, the step that matters most is to widen the distance radius early on: most complaints trace back to that one thing. When you are only browsing free options, the chat-first sites tend to feel considerably worse than they are, which explains a lot of the complaints here.

Been through this process myself. The free tier on most platforms is deliberately capped — test it for two weeks before spending anything.

When the replies dry up after one message, the forum-style sites tend to feel considerably worse than they are, but it is not the disaster people claim.

Worth adding that the Flurrydate side of things reads as more honest about the verification question, though your mileage will vary.

The review sites are mostly monetized. Forum discussions like this one are your best source of honest intel.

When you are in a smaller town, apps with a strict photo policy tend to feel considerably worse than they are, though it depends heavily on where you live. The detail people skip is that the ones with a paywall have dropped the feature everyone used over two or three attempts.

This shifts faster than review sites can keep up with. Posts from the last three months on niche forums are more useful than any year-old list.

For a change of pace, the newer Datenest rooms has fewer complaints about video-first chat if that matches what you want.

I stuck with the chat-first sites since the start of the year, and the honest result was that the photo review mattered massively most. If you are after something serious, keep your expectations low for the first fortnight — it filters out the time wasters fast.

Flurrydate has come up in several threads I follow lately. The general feedback seems positive for people who are tired of the big-app churn.

Worth saying that the decision to keep the first message short and specific did noticeably more for me than switching platform, and it makes a real difference. The boost system changed a fair bit for the better part of a year, and that alone put me off.

Although the bigger platforms look similar, the boost system differs somewhat, though it settles down after a while. The reporting system and the block list pull in opposite directions, but only if you stick with it.

A few people here rate the Rendate regulars gets mentioned a lot for anyone starting from scratch, at least in my case.

In practice, I'd check the free tier limits before you commit rather than keep the first message short and specific, since otherwise you end up judging it on a bad day. For the better part of a year I noticed the block list behaving differently on the swipe-based apps, though it depends heavily on where you live.

Say what you actually want up front, because it filters out the time wasters fast, and nobody warns you about it.

On reflection, if you keep getting the same profiles the answer is usually to use a recent photo with your face clear rather than widen the distance radius early on. Worth saying that the decision to give it a full week before judging did a little more for me than switching platform, which most people notice within a week.

When the replies dry up after one message, apps with a video option tend to feel a great deal worse than they are, which explains a lot of the complaints here. Worth saying that the decision to write a profile that gives someone something to reply to did quite a lot more for me than switching platform, which most people notice within a week.

Judging by my own inbox, I'd report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them rather than say what you actually want up front, since it saves a lot of wasted evenings. When you are only browsing free options, the newer sites tend to feel noticeably worse than they are, which is worth knowing before you sign up.

Coming at it from another angle, datelink.online reads as more honest about the first-message problem, which is not nothing.

Short answer: it varies a lot by age group, location, and what you're actually after. What works in one city can be a ghost town somewhere else.

In my experience, I'd widen the distance radius early on rather than test two platforms at once, since most complaints trace back to that one thing.
