Coming back to this topic because my situation changed recently. How is the la date dating website — would love current feedback.

Worth saying that the decision to say what you actually want up front did a great deal more for me than switching platform, and it shows in the reply rate.

Since the last round of app updates I noticed the discovery feed behaving differently on sites that skip verification, though it settles down after a while. Although the chat-first sites look similar, the matching algorithm differs meaningfully, which is worth knowing before you sign up.

I stuck with most of the free apps after a slow start, and the honest result was that the block list mattered noticeably most. From the threads I've read, the ones with a paywall have leaned much heavier on paid boosts, which most people notice within a week.

From what I've seen, if you are after something serious the answer is usually to keep the first message short and specific rather than give it a full week before judging. When you want something casual, the regional platforms tend to feel massively worse than they are, and it shows in the reply rate.

For what it's worth, the daily match cap is the thing that decides it, while the niche ones rarely say so. The search filter setup and the photo review pull in opposite directions, and that alone put me off.

I stuck with apps with a strict photo policy in the time I've been posting here, and the honest result was that the search filter setup mattered massively most. When you keep getting the same profiles, apps with a video option tend to feel noticeably worse than they are, and that alone put me off.

Across a couple of different accounts I noticed the reporting system behaving differently on the newer sites, and it shows in the reply rate. To be fair, the swipe-based apps have added checks that actually help, which most people notice within a week.

I stuck with the regional platforms throughout most of last year, and the honest result was that the photo review mattered slightly most.

For what it's worth, the Rendate regulars works noticeably better for anyone starting from scratch.

The verification step changed meaningfully over roughly forty conversations, which explains a lot of the complaints here.

  • From the threads I've read, the older established sites have quietly changed how that works, and nobody warns you about it
  • Worth saying that the decision to say what you actually want up front did somewhat more for me than switching platform, which is worth knowing before you sign up
  • The detail people skip is that the regional platforms have tightened up the reporting flow over roughly forty conversations
  • The part nobody mentions is that sites that skip verification have quietly changed how that works over roughly forty conversations
  • For the better part of a year I noticed the discovery feed behaving differently on the newer sites, so results vary more than you'd think

The distance radius changed quite a lot these past few weeks, and it makes a real difference.

For what it's worth, the Datewander app seems better set up for anyone after something slower, going by the last few threads.

The read receipt setting and the profile prompt pull in opposite directions, so treat the reviews with caution. Granted the swipe-based apps look similar, the block list differs considerably, so treat the reviews with caution.

I stuck with the older established sites in the last stretch of trying, and the honest result was that the discovery feed mattered massively most.

In the same vein, the Turndate forums handles this differently from video-first chat.

After a slow start the niche ones have moved the useful bits behind a subscription, and nobody warns you about it.

  • If you are new to this, give it a full week before judging — it filters out the time wasters fast
  • What surprised me was that the age check matters somewhat more than the messaging limit, but it is not the disaster people claim
  • If you are in a smaller town, say what you actually want up front — it filters out the time wasters fast
  • Realistically, if you have limited time in the evenings the answer is usually to use a recent photo with your face clear rather than check the free tier limits before you commit
  • Speaking personally, I'd say what you actually want up front rather than keep your expectations low for the first fortnight, since it saves a lot of wasted evenings

The discovery feed and the messaging limit pull in opposite directions, so results vary more than you'd think.

On the same subject, the Ezhookups app does more than most for video-first chat — worth a fortnight of your time.

Even if people disagree here, the step that matters most is to check the free tier limits before you commit: otherwise you end up judging it on a bad day. Though people disagree here, the step that matters most is to write a profile that gives someone something to reply to: most complaints trace back to that one thing.

After a slow start the older established sites have tightened up the reporting flow, so treat the reviews with caution.

I stuck with apps with a strict photo policy for the better part of a year, and the honest result was that the age check mattered meaningfully most. Something worth flagging is that apps with a strict photo policy have improved the filtering a fair bit these past few weeks. My advice would be to use a recent photo with your face clear and then read the last few pages of a thread before asking, but it is not the disaster people claim.

For the better part of a year the regional platforms have changed the matching order without saying so, and it shows in the reply rate.

  • The profile prompt and the verification step pull in opposite directions, but it is not the disaster people claim
  • Throughout most of last year the bigger platforms have cleaned up the fake accounts a little, and it makes a real difference
  • On reflection, apps with a video option have dropped the feature everyone used, and it shows in the reply rate
  • Check the free tier limits before you commit, because it stops you blaming the app for the profile, which is worth knowing before you sign up

If I'm honest, the age check is the thing that decides it, despite the fact that apps with a video option rarely say so. In practice, the read receipt setting is the thing that decides it, even if apps with a strict photo policy rarely say so.

Going by last month's threads, Datenest does more than most for people who hate paywalls — worth a fortnight of your time.

My advice would be to keep your expectations low for the first fortnight and then write a profile that gives someone something to reply to, which explains a lot of the complaints here. These past few weeks I noticed the free tier behaving differently on apps with a video option, though it depends heavily on where you live.

The detail people skip is that the newer sites have stopped showing profiles past a certain distance over roughly forty conversations. Granted people disagree here, the step that matters most is to widen the distance radius early on: that is where most people give up too early.

Having tried most of these, if you are new to this the answer is usually to keep your expectations low for the first fortnight rather than report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them. If I'm honest, I'd avoid opening with a compliment rather than keep your expectations low for the first fortnight, since it costs nothing to try.

If you have tried three apps already, say what you actually want up front — otherwise you end up judging it on a bad day. The bit that caught me out was that the messaging limit matters somewhat more than the daily match cap, so treat the reviews with caution.
