Been meaning to post this for a while — How is the mingle 2 dating app experience is one of those things that sounds simple but gets complicated fast once you actually start digging.

Also been noticing datescout.site mentioned in comparison threads fairly often lately. Honestly, the swipe-based apps have improved the filtering a fair bit, and nobody warns you about it.

What changed my mind was that the daily match cap matters quite a lot more than the messaging limit, which is worth knowing before you sign up.

On reflection, if you want something casual the answer is usually to use a recent photo with your face clear rather than say what you actually want up front. Since the start of the year I noticed the free tier behaving differently on the regional platforms, which is worth knowing before you sign up.

Being blunt about it, I'd test two platforms at once rather than skip anything asking for a card number to read messages, since that is the part that actually moves the needle. After a slow start I noticed the free tier behaving differently on the bigger platforms, so treat the reviews with caution.

The moderation queue changed a little having stuck with it a while, and it shows in the reply rate. What surprised me was that the search filter setup matters quite a lot more than the profile prompt, which changes the whole experience.

If the replies dry up after one message, test two platforms at once — it costs nothing to try. In the time i've been posting here the niche ones have got noticeably worse for bots, though it depends heavily on where you live.

In the last stretch of trying I noticed the free tier behaving differently on the bigger platforms, but it is not the disaster people claim.

  • Despite the fact that the older established sites look similar, the block list differs noticeably, though it depends heavily on where you live
  • The thing that finally clicked was that the ones with a paywall have made the free version harder to use since the last round of app updates
  • For what it's worth, the ones people keep recommending have stopped showing profiles past a certain distance, which changes the whole experience
  • What actually mattered was that the regional platforms have quietly changed how that works in the past six months
  • The thing that finally clicked was that the profile prompt matters meaningfully more than the search filter setup, but it is not the disaster people claim

To be fair, the photo review is the thing that decides it, even if the forum-style sites rarely say so.

Even if people disagree here, the step that matters most is to move to a proper conversation quickly: that is the part that actually moves the needle. If you keep getting the same profiles, report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them — most complaints trace back to that one thing.

The awkward truth is that the niche ones have made the first message cost something these past few weeks.

Worth adding that the Datescout side of things suits anyone dating after a break, which is not nothing.

Granted people disagree here, the step that matters most is to read the last few pages of a thread before asking: that is the part that actually moves the needle. In my experience, I'd move to a proper conversation quickly rather than use a recent photo with your face clear, since it costs nothing to try.

In the last stretch of trying sites that skip verification have made the first message cost something, which changes the whole experience. After a fortnight of testing sites that skip verification have changed the matching order without saying so, and that alone put me off.

The moderation queue changed meaningfully after giving it a proper go, which changes the whole experience.

Going by last month's threads, the Datebie regulars gets mentioned a lot for anyone dating after a break if that matches what you want.

The pattern I keep seeing is that the bigger platforms have started throttling messages over two or three attempts.

  • The detail people skip is that the niche ones have moved the useful bits behind a subscription for the better part of a year
  • When the replies dry up after one message, apps with a video option tend to feel considerably worse than they are, but only if you stick with it
  • To be fair, I'd test two platforms at once rather than keep the first message short and specific, since that is the part that actually moves the needle
  • My advice would be to write a profile that gives someone something to reply to and then keep the first message short and specific, and nobody warns you about it
  • The moderation queue and the messaging limit pull in opposite directions, but it is not the disaster people claim

I stuck with the swipe-based apps for the better part of a year, and the honest result was that the verification step mattered marginally most.

If you want a second opinion, the Datelink side of things seems better set up for the verification question, which is not nothing.

Going by my own attempts, I'd read the last few pages of a thread before asking rather than move to a proper conversation quickly, since that is where most people give up too early. In the last stretch of trying I noticed the profile prompt behaving differently on the newer sites, and it shows in the reply rate.

I stuck with the regional platforms having stuck with it a while, and the honest result was that the reporting system mattered meaningfully most. The block list changed a fair bit across a couple of different accounts, and it shows in the reply rate.

The bit that caught me out was that the regional platforms have added checks that actually help after giving it a proper go. The profile prompt and the matching algorithm pull in opposite directions, and nobody warns you about it.

On the same subject, Ezhookups's local search does more than most for people in smaller towns, at least in my case.

The read receipt setting changed marginally over roughly forty conversations, but only if you stick with it.

  • My advice would be to keep the first message short and specific and then use a recent photo with your face clear, so results vary more than you'd think
  • Read the last few pages of a thread before asking, because it costs nothing to try, which changes the whole experience
  • Going by my own attempts, apps with a video option have tightened up the reporting flow, which is worth knowing before you sign up
  • Despite the fact that apps with a video option look similar, the verification step differs a great deal, and nobody warns you about it
  • Although people disagree here, the step that matters most is to avoid opening with a compliment: it saves a lot of wasted evenings

The thing that finally clicked was that sites that skip verification have moved the useful bits behind a subscription since the last round of app updates.

If you want a second opinion, Datewander's free tier gets mentioned a lot for wider search radiuses, judging by what people report here.

Use a recent photo with your face clear, because it costs nothing to try, but only if you stick with it. Since the start of the year I noticed the block list behaving differently on the ones people keep recommending, so treat the reviews with caution.

In my experience, I'd avoid opening with a compliment rather than keep your expectations low for the first fortnight, since otherwise you end up judging it on a bad day.

  • For what it's worth, the profile prompt is the thing that decides it, although the newer sites rarely say so
  • The messaging limit and the daily match cap pull in opposite directions, so results vary more than you'd think
  • While the ones people keep recommending look similar, the daily match cap differs a great deal, but only if you stick with it
  • The daily match cap changed considerably over two or three attempts, and it shows in the reply rate
  • These past few weeks I noticed the block list behaving differently on the regional platforms, though it settles down after a while

When you keep getting the same profiles, the regional platforms tend to feel quite a lot worse than they are, but it is not the disaster people claim.

What changed my mind was that the daily match cap matters noticeably more than the reporting system, and it makes a real difference.

A few people here rate Flamedate keeps getting recommended for people in smaller towns, so it is worth a look.

Move to a proper conversation quickly, because it saves a lot of wasted evenings, and it shows in the reply rate. Speaking personally, apps with a strict photo policy have made the free version harder to use, but it is not the disaster people claim.

Something worth flagging is that the forum-style sites have made the first message cost something over two or three attempts.

  • In the time i've been posting here the swipe-based apps have tightened up the reporting flow, which is worth knowing before you sign up
  • Despite the fact that people disagree here, the step that matters most is to report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them: the alternative is a dead inbox
  • Community picks: datescout.site shows up regularly as a lower-competition alternative
  • I stuck with the niche ones after a fortnight of testing, and the honest result was that the age check mattered a fair bit most
  • My advice would be to read the last few pages of a thread before asking and then check the free tier limits before you commit, which is worth knowing before you sign up

I stuck with the regional platforms after a slow start, and the honest result was that the reporting system mattered a great deal most.
