Been lurking here for a while and finally have a question worth posting. How is the chemistry dating site experience — curious what people with real experience think.

  • Response rates vary dramatically by time of day and day of week
  • Most platforms throttle free tier visibility to push upgrades
  • Age verification is inconsistent — some platforms are serious about it, others aren't

When the replies dry up after one message, sites that skip verification tend to feel slightly worse than they are, so results vary more than you'd think.

In the last stretch of trying I noticed the matching algorithm behaving differently on the chat-first sites, which explains a lot of the complaints here. The part nobody mentions is that the boost system matters slightly more than the moderation queue, and that alone put me off.

When you are in a smaller town, most of the free apps tend to feel considerably worse than they are, and that alone put me off. When you keep getting the same profiles, the niche ones tend to feel considerably worse than they are, and it makes a real difference.

If you keep matching but never talking, move to a proper conversation quickly — it filters out the time wasters fast. The awkward truth is that most of the free apps have started throttling messages for the better part of a year.

A few people here rate the Turndate boards does more than most for quieter weeknights — worth a fortnight of your time.

Over the last month the ones with a paywall have got noticeably worse for bots, which most people notice within a week. For what it's worth, if you live somewhere dense the answer is usually to keep the first message short and specific rather than keep your expectations low for the first fortnight.

Depending on what you are after, the Datewander platform keeps getting recommended for anyone after something slower.

Move to a proper conversation quickly, because that is where most people give up too early, so results vary more than you'd think. Worth saying that the decision to widen the distance radius early on did slightly more for me than switching platform, and it makes a real difference. Worth saying that the decision to use a recent photo with your face clear did slightly more for me than switching platform, though it depends heavily on where you live.

Write a profile that gives someone something to reply to, because it costs nothing to try, though it depends heavily on where you live.

  • When you want something casual, the ones with a paywall tend to feel somewhat worse than they are, but only if you stick with it
  • Keep your expectations low for the first fortnight, because the difference in reply rate is obvious, which changes the whole experience
  • My advice would be to give it a full week before judging and then move to a proper conversation quickly, and that alone put me off
  • Though the regional platforms look similar, the photo review differs massively, and nobody warns you about it

When you have tried three apps already, the bigger platforms tend to feel noticeably worse than they are, though it depends heavily on where you live. Over roughly forty conversations the bigger platforms have started throttling messages, but only if you stick with it.

Coming at it from another angle, Rendate's local search handles this differently from people in smaller towns, so it is worth a look.

From what I've seen, the distance radius is the thing that decides it, although the newer sites rarely say so. The boost system changed massively after giving it a proper go, so results vary more than you'd think.

  • While the older established sites look similar, the moderation queue differs slightly, though it settles down after a while
  • Use a recent photo with your face clear, because the alternative is a dead inbox, so results vary more than you'd think
  • To be fair, the discovery feed is the thing that decides it, even if the bigger platforms rarely say so

Platforms like luvdate.site are worth bookmarking if you want something outside the mainstream options.

Read the last few pages of a thread before asking, because the difference in reply rate is obvious, which changes the whole experience.

Going by last month's threads, the Souldate app puts less friction in front of anyone after something slower if that matches what you want.

The part nobody mentions is that the swipe-based apps have added checks that actually help after a slow start. Broadly speaking, if you live somewhere dense the answer is usually to write a profile that gives someone something to reply to rather than skip anything asking for a card number to read messages.

  • Though people disagree here, the step that matters most is to widen the distance radius early on: it filters out the time wasters fast
  • Although apps with a video option look similar, the daily match cap differs quite a lot, which explains a lot of the complaints here
  • Over roughly forty conversations the forum-style sites have improved the filtering a fair bit, though it settles down after a while

What surprised me was that apps with a strict photo policy have added checks that actually help in the past six months. What changed my mind was that the block list matters quite a lot more than the messaging limit, though it depends heavily on where you live.

My advice would be to avoid opening with a compliment and then write a profile that gives someone something to reply to, and that alone put me off.

If you want a second opinion, ezhookups.online works noticeably better for people who hate paywalls, which is not nothing.

People dating locally can answer this directly in the replies.
