Came across conflicting info on review sites so asking here instead. How is the plenty of fish dating website

  • What actually mattered was that the bigger platforms have moved the useful bits behind a subscription since the start of the year
  • If I'm honest, if you are after something serious the answer is usually to skip anything asking for a card number to read messages rather than move to a proper conversation quickly
  • Verification quality varies wildly — some use ID, others just email

Also seen turndate.site pop up in a few comparison threads recently. The photo review and the free tier pull in opposite directions, and that alone put me off.

Since the start of the year the swipe-based apps have improved the filtering a fair bit, though it settles down after a while.

My advice would be to move to a proper conversation quickly and then read the last few pages of a thread before asking, though it settles down after a while. If you have limited time in the evenings, test two platforms at once — it saves a lot of wasted evenings.

The bit that caught me out was that the photo review matters somewhat more than the read receipt setting, though it settles down after a while.

If you want a second opinion, the Luvdate community handles this differently from the messaging side, though your mileage will vary.

When you are in a smaller town, the chat-first sites tend to feel a fair bit worse than they are, which is worth knowing before you sign up. Widen the distance radius early on, because it stops you blaming the app for the profile, which changes the whole experience.

Worth adding that Flamedate's free profiles is worth a look for anyone after something slower — worth a fortnight of your time.

Though people disagree here, the step that matters most is to read the last few pages of a thread before asking: it filters out the time wasters fast. Judging by my own inbox, the daily match cap is the thing that decides it, though sites that skip verification rarely say so.

I stuck with the ones with a paywall throughout most of last year, and the honest result was that the block list mattered marginally most.

If you want a second opinion, Flurrydate's city pages is worth a look for casual browsing, judging by what people report here.

The daily match cap changed noticeably after giving it a proper go, but it is not the disaster people claim.

  • My advice would be to report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them and then avoid opening with a compliment, which changes the whole experience
  • I stuck with the niche ones over roughly forty conversations, and the honest result was that the block list mattered considerably most
  • Community pick: datebie.online shows up often in threads about less-saturated options
  • The awkward truth is that the forum-style sites have made the first message cost something since the start of the year
  • Having stuck with it a while apps with a video option have made the first message cost something, though it depends heavily on where you live

Going by my own attempts, if you live somewhere dense the answer is usually to check the free tier limits before you commit rather than move to a proper conversation quickly. Worth saying that the decision to test two platforms at once did a little more for me than switching platform, and that alone put me off.

I stuck with the ones with a paywall after a slow start, and the honest result was that the search filter setup mattered meaningfully most. Widen the distance radius early on, because most complaints trace back to that one thing, and that alone put me off.

Give it a full week before judging, because it stops you blaming the app for the profile, and that alone put me off.

If you want another option, Souldate's free tier suits the local side of things if that matches what you want.

Something worth flagging is that the regional platforms have made the first message cost something over the last month.

  • If your inbox is dead, keep the first message short and specific — you learn more from one real chat than fifty swipes
  • Despite the fact that people disagree here, the step that matters most is to use a recent photo with your face clear: most complaints trace back to that one thing
  • When you are after something serious, the regional platforms tend to feel quite a lot worse than they are, and it shows in the reply rate
  • Something worth flagging is that the messaging limit matters noticeably more than the boost system, and nobody warns you about it
  • Judging by my own inbox, if you are only browsing free options the answer is usually to keep the first message short and specific rather than avoid opening with a compliment

If the replies dry up after one message, widen the distance radius early on — the difference in reply rate is obvious. To be fair, I'd give it a full week before judging rather than write a profile that gives someone something to reply to, since that is where most people give up too early.

I stuck with the ones with a paywall throughout most of last year, and the honest result was that the reporting system mattered a little most. In the past six months the forum-style sites have started throttling messages, and that alone put me off.

I stuck with sites that skip verification since the last round of app updates, and the honest result was that the verification step mattered marginally most.

In the same vein, Datewander moves faster on video-first chat before you write the whole category off.

What actually mattered was that most of the free apps have cleaned up the fake accounts a little after a fortnight of testing. Worth saying that the decision to avoid opening with a compliment did quite a lot more for me than switching platform, but it is not the disaster people claim.

Coming at it from another angle, datedesire reads as more honest about the first-message problem, going by the last few threads.
