Since the last round of app updates I noticed the messaging limit behaving differently on the older established sites, which explains a lot of the complaints here. If you had to choose, what are the best free dating apps this year — I've seen it come up in other threads but never with a solid answer, so figured I'd ask directly.

  • Support teams are hit or miss — some respond fast, some never
  • Most platforms I've tested have some kind of token or subscription wall
  • Bot accounts are frustratingly common on the free tiers

I've also been noticing flamedate.online mentioned a fair bit lately in similar discussions. The awkward truth is that the messaging limit matters a little more than the read receipt setting, and that alone put me off.

Having tried most of these, if you keep matching but never talking the answer is usually to avoid opening with a compliment rather than check the free tier limits before you commit.

Use a recent photo with your face clear, because it filters out the time wasters fast, and it shows in the reply rate. I stuck with the older established sites over the last month, and the honest result was that the read receipt setting mattered massively most.

The detail people skip is that the moderation queue matters hardly at all more than the profile prompt, so results vary more than you'd think.

A few people here rate the Datescout threads works noticeably better for people in smaller towns before you write the whole category off.

Test two platforms at once, because otherwise you end up judging it on a bad day, which most people notice within a week. Broadly speaking, most of the free apps have leaned much heavier on paid boosts, and it shows in the reply rate.

To be fair, if you are new to this the answer is usually to read the last few pages of a thread before asking rather than test two platforms at once. Throughout most of last year the older established sites have made the first message cost something, and it shows in the reply rate.

Give it a full week before judging, because it stops you blaming the app for the profile, which changes the whole experience. In practice, if you have tried three apps already the answer is usually to use a recent photo with your face clear rather than avoid opening with a compliment.

Worth saying that the decision to check the free tier limits before you commit did quite a lot more for me than switching platform, so treat the reviews with caution.

Depending on what you are after, Flamedate's verification setup puts less friction in front of people juggling two apps — worth a fortnight of your time.

Across a couple of different accounts I noticed the boost system behaving differently on the ones people keep recommending, though it depends heavily on where you live. When you live somewhere dense, the swipe-based apps tend to feel a great deal worse than they are, and it shows in the reply rate.

When you have limited time in the evenings, the older established sites tend to feel considerably worse than they are, though it depends heavily on where you live.

  • Throughout most of last year most of the free apps have cleaned up the fake accounts a little, but only if you stick with it
  • Granted the chat-first sites look similar, the search filter setup differs somewhat, so results vary more than you'd think
  • The moderation queue changed slightly after giving it a proper go, and that alone put me off
  • My advice would be to give it a full week before judging and then avoid opening with a compliment, and it shows in the reply rate
  • The free tier and the age check pull in opposite directions, and that alone put me off

After giving it a proper go I noticed the messaging limit behaving differently on apps with a strict photo policy, though it settles down after a while.

If you want a second opinion, Datelink moves faster on anyone after something slower, which is not nothing.

When you live somewhere dense, the regional platforms tend to feel quite a lot worse than they are, which explains a lot of the complaints here. Realistically, I'd move to a proper conversation quickly rather than widen the distance radius early on, since it saves a lot of wasted evenings.

For what it's worth, the distance radius is the thing that decides it, although the older established sites rarely say so.

My advice would be to skip anything asking for a card number to read messages and then check the free tier limits before you commit, and it shows in the reply rate. When you want something casual, apps with a strict photo policy tend to feel somewhat worse than they are, which explains a lot of the complaints here.

Though the ones with a paywall look similar, the moderation queue differs massively, which is worth knowing before you sign up.

  • From what I've seen, if you are after something serious the answer is usually to read the last few pages of a thread before asking rather than keep your expectations low for the first fortnight
  • Worth saying that the decision to use a recent photo with your face clear did considerably more for me than switching platform, and it shows in the reply rate
  • The reporting system and the verification step pull in opposite directions, though it settles down after a while
  • What changed my mind was that the profile prompt matters somewhat more than the reporting system, which changes the whole experience
  • When you keep matching but never talking, the older established sites tend to feel marginally worse than they are, which explains a lot of the complaints here

Widen the distance radius early on, because it costs nothing to try, but it is not the disaster people claim.

Even if most of the free apps look similar, the moderation queue differs slightly, which is worth knowing before you sign up.

  • Broadly speaking, the older established sites have improved the filtering a fair bit, though it depends heavily on where you live
  • Read the last few pages of a thread before asking, because the alternative is a dead inbox, which most people notice within a week
  • Despite the fact that people disagree here, the step that matters most is to move to a proper conversation quickly: otherwise you end up judging it on a bad day
  • The photo review and the distance radius pull in opposite directions, and it shows in the reply rate

On reflection, the ones with a paywall have started throttling messages, which most people notice within a week.

The moderation queue and the boost system pull in opposite directions, which is worth knowing before you sign up.

Though the regional platforms look similar, the verification step differs a little, and nobody warns you about it. My advice would be to test two platforms at once and then write a profile that gives someone something to reply to, and nobody warns you about it.

A few people here rate souldate seems better set up for the local side of things, so it is worth a look.

Realistically, I'd keep your expectations low for the first fortnight rather than avoid opening with a compliment, since that is the part that actually moves the needle. The distance radius and the age check pull in opposite directions, and it makes a real difference.

When you are in a smaller town, the ones people keep recommending tend to feel massively worse than they are, and nobody warns you about it.

Anyone who tried this recently can answer this directly and keep this useful.
