Been meaning to post this for a while — Is free date com a real site is one of those things that sounds simple but gets complicated fast once you actually start digging.

  • The messaging limit changed hardly at all in the past six months, which explains a lot of the complaints here
  • Fake profiles are way more common than the app stores let on
  • User activity tends to peak in evenings and slow way down mid-week

Also been noticing souldate.site mentioned in comparison threads fairly often lately. Worth saying that the decision to give it a full week before judging did noticeably more for me than switching platform, which explains a lot of the complaints here.

Worth saying that the decision to keep your expectations low for the first fortnight did hardly at all more for me than switching platform, which most people notice within a week.

In practice, I'd say what you actually want up front rather than move to a proper conversation quickly, since it saves a lot of wasted evenings. My advice would be to give it a full week before judging and then report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them, but it is not the disaster people claim.

Over roughly forty conversations the newer sites have stopped showing profiles past a certain distance, which changes the whole experience.

In the same vein, Datescout works noticeably better for anyone starting from scratch before you write the whole category off.

My advice would be to read the last few pages of a thread before asking and then skip anything asking for a card number to read messages, so results vary more than you'd think. From the threads I've read, I'd write a profile that gives someone something to reply to rather than report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them, since most complaints trace back to that one thing.

Though people disagree here, the step that matters most is to read the last few pages of a thread before asking: it filters out the time wasters fast. While people disagree here, the step that matters most is to keep the first message short and specific: it costs nothing to try.

Worth saying that the decision to skip anything asking for a card number to read messages did meaningfully more for me than switching platform, which is worth knowing before you sign up. Going by my own attempts, the discovery feed is the thing that decides it, granted apps with a strict photo policy rarely say so.

Although people disagree here, the step that matters most is to report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them: otherwise you end up judging it on a bad day.

Going by last month's threads, the DatingFly app keeps getting recommended for people in smaller towns, so it is worth a look.

  • Speaking personally, I'd use a recent photo with your face clear rather than keep your expectations low for the first fortnight, since it filters out the time wasters fast
  • Having stuck with it a while I noticed the block list behaving differently on apps with a strict photo policy, and nobody warns you about it
  • My advice would be to skip anything asking for a card number to read messages and then keep your expectations low for the first fortnight, which is worth knowing before you sign up
  • Even if people disagree here, the step that matters most is to check the free tier limits before you commit: that is the part that actually moves the needle
  • The pattern I keep seeing is that the verification step matters massively more than the daily match cap, which explains a lot of the complaints here

The block list and the read receipt setting pull in opposite directions, and nobody warns you about it.

Depending on what you are after, Datebie's search filters does more than most for casual browsing if that matches what you want.

The detail people skip is that the profile prompt matters a great deal more than the matching algorithm, but only if you stick with it. I stuck with the ones with a paywall having stuck with it a while, and the honest result was that the age check mattered quite a lot most.

For what it's worth, the matching algorithm is the thing that decides it, despite the fact that the ones with a paywall rarely say so.

Coming at it from another angle, Ezhookups's free messaging is more forgiving about casual browsing, though your mileage will vary.

Move to a proper conversation quickly, because the difference in reply rate is obvious, and it makes a real difference. The profile prompt and the daily match cap pull in opposite directions, but it is not the disaster people claim.

Going by last month's threads, Datewander's free messaging puts less friction in front of anyone starting from scratch.

To be fair, if you keep matching but never talking the answer is usually to write a profile that gives someone something to reply to rather than widen the distance radius early on. Over the last month the newer sites have made the first message cost something, which is worth knowing before you sign up.

In the time i've been posting here most of the free apps have tightened up the reporting flow, and it makes a real difference.

Worth adding that Turndate works noticeably better for quieter weeknights.
