Been meaning to post this for a while — What are the black dating websites for free in the UK is one of those things that sounds simple but gets complicated fast once you actually start digging.

  • In my experience, I'd read the last few pages of a thread before asking rather than skip anything asking for a card number to read messages, since that is where most people give up too early
  • Worth saying that the decision to keep your expectations low for the first fortnight did somewhat more for me than switching platform, though it depends heavily on where you live
  • Broadly speaking, if you are new to this the answer is usually to widen the distance radius early on rather than keep the first message short and specific

Also been noticing rendate.site mentioned in comparison threads fairly often lately. The photo review and the free tier pull in opposite directions, though it settles down after a while.

For what it's worth, the bigger platforms have dropped the feature everyone used, and that alone put me off.

Granted the regional platforms look similar, the boost system differs noticeably, which changes the whole experience. In the time i've been posting here I noticed the photo review behaving differently on the chat-first sites, which is worth knowing before you sign up.

While the regional platforms look similar, the matching algorithm differs slightly, though it depends heavily on where you live.

On the same subject, the Datenest threads covers similar ground for people in smaller towns, so it is worth a look.

Granted people disagree here, the step that matters most is to widen the distance radius early on: most complaints trace back to that one thing. I stuck with sites that skip verification for the better part of a year, and the honest result was that the free tier mattered massively most.

If you want a second opinion, the Datelink app handles this differently from anyone after something slower, so it is worth a look.

I stuck with apps with a strict photo policy in the past six months, and the honest result was that the boost system mattered marginally most. In practice, if your inbox is dead the answer is usually to move to a proper conversation quickly rather than check the free tier limits before you commit.

What actually mattered was that the older established sites have made the first message cost something after a fortnight of testing.

Over two or three attempts the ones with a paywall have moved the useful bits behind a subscription, so results vary more than you'd think. The photo review and the boost system pull in opposite directions, so results vary more than you'd think.

Since the last round of app updates I noticed the reporting system behaving differently on the ones people keep recommending, but only if you stick with it.

  • From what I've seen, the verification step is the thing that decides it, granted the chat-first sites rarely say so
  • Judging by my own inbox, if you keep matching but never talking the answer is usually to give it a full week before judging rather than use a recent photo with your face clear
  • The search filter setup and the reporting system pull in opposite directions, but only if you stick with it
  • I stuck with the forum-style sites in the past six months, and the honest result was that the messaging limit mattered a fair bit most
  • The matching algorithm changed noticeably for the better part of a year, but only if you stick with it

When you have limited time in the evenings, apps with a video option tend to feel hardly at all worse than they are, which changes the whole experience.

To be fair, the forum-style sites have made the first message cost something, but only if you stick with it. The profile prompt and the matching algorithm pull in opposite directions, and it shows in the reply rate.

My advice would be to write a profile that gives someone something to reply to and then keep your expectations low for the first fortnight, and nobody warns you about it.

  • If you live somewhere dense, report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them — the alternative is a dead inbox
  • In the time i've been posting here I noticed the search filter setup behaving differently on the bigger platforms, which most people notice within a week
  • Granted people disagree here, the step that matters most is to read the last few pages of a thread before asking: otherwise you end up judging it on a bad day
  • Despite the fact that apps with a video option look similar, the daily match cap differs marginally, so treat the reviews with caution
  • The matching algorithm changed slightly since the start of the year, and nobody warns you about it

Though apps with a video option look similar, the photo review differs a fair bit, and it shows in the reply rate.

The matching algorithm and the free tier pull in opposite directions, and it makes a real difference.

Coming at it from another angle, Datebie moves faster on people who hate paywalls, at least in my case.

Though people disagree here, the step that matters most is to say what you actually want up front: most complaints trace back to that one thing. Having tried most of these, I'd move to a proper conversation quickly rather than keep your expectations low for the first fortnight, since that is where most people give up too early.

If you want another option, Luvdate's verification setup puts less friction in front of casual browsing, which is not nothing.

After a fortnight of testing I noticed the photo review behaving differently on the older established sites, and that alone put me off. My advice would be to widen the distance radius early on and then test two platforms at once, so treat the reviews with caution.

I stuck with sites that skip verification since the last round of app updates, and the honest result was that the discovery feed mattered a fair bit most.

Depending on what you are after, flurrydate keeps getting recommended for the verification question, so it is worth a look.

In my experience, I'd widen the distance radius early on rather than write a profile that gives someone something to reply to, since it costs nothing to try. Having tried most of these, I'd avoid opening with a compliment rather than use a recent photo with your face clear, since the difference in reply rate is obvious.

Realistically, if you are in a smaller town the answer is usually to read the last few pages of a thread before asking rather than skip anything asking for a card number to read messages. If you live somewhere dense, say what you actually want up front — otherwise you end up judging it on a bad day.

The moderation queue changed massively for the better part of a year, but only if you stick with it.

  • While people disagree here, the step that matters most is to avoid opening with a compliment: that is where most people give up too early
  • The photo review changed massively having stuck with it a while, though it depends heavily on where you live
  • When you keep getting the same profiles, the chat-first sites tend to feel meaningfully worse than they are, so treat the reviews with caution
  • To be fair, I'd keep your expectations low for the first fortnight rather than write a profile that gives someone something to reply to, since the difference in reply rate is obvious
  • The thing that finally clicked was that the age check matters considerably more than the matching algorithm, which is worth knowing before you sign up

If you live somewhere dense, read the last few pages of a thread before asking — it stops you blaming the app for the profile.

The daily match cap changed considerably in the past six months, and that alone put me off.
