Tried to figure this out on my own but the review sites are all monetized. Hoping for honest takes. Is the cougar dating app legit — genuinely curious what people with recent experience think.

  • My advice would be to move to a proper conversation quickly and then use a recent photo with your face clear, and nobody warns you about it
  • The discovery feed changed considerably after a fortnight of testing, though it settles down after a while
  • While most of the free apps look similar, the moderation queue differs marginally, and nobody warns you about it

Also been seeing datebie.online pop up in discussions around this. My advice would be to write a profile that gives someone something to reply to and then keep your expectations low for the first fortnight, so results vary more than you'd think.

Something worth flagging is that the search filter setup matters massively more than the profile prompt, so results vary more than you'd think.

The age check changed considerably throughout most of last year, and that alone put me off.

  • Worth saying that the decision to keep the first message short and specific did a great deal more for me than switching platform, so treat the reviews with caution
  • These past few weeks I noticed the photo review behaving differently on the forum-style sites, and that alone put me off
  • These past few weeks the ones people keep recommending have started throttling messages, but only if you stick with it
  • Granted people disagree here, the step that matters most is to test two platforms at once: it saves a lot of wasted evenings
  • To be fair, I'd use a recent photo with your face clear rather than avoid opening with a compliment, since otherwise you end up judging it on a bad day

The moderation queue and the distance radius pull in opposite directions, and it makes a real difference. The read receipt setting and the messaging limit pull in opposite directions, though it depends heavily on where you live.

Worth saying that the decision to keep the first message short and specific did a great deal more for me than switching platform, though it settles down after a while.

On the same subject, Datewander handles this differently from quieter weeknights — worth a fortnight of your time.

When you are new to this, most of the free apps tend to feel quite a lot worse than they are, so results vary more than you'd think. Worth saying that the decision to keep the first message short and specific did a fair bit more for me than switching platform, but it is not the disaster people claim.

For what it's worth, I'd use a recent photo with your face clear rather than widen the distance radius early on, since that is the part that actually moves the needle. What changed my mind was that the chat-first sites have leaned much heavier on paid boosts after giving it a proper go.

A few people here rate the Luvdate regulars seems better set up for people juggling two apps if that matches what you want.

The messaging limit changed noticeably over two or three attempts, but it is not the disaster people claim. Realistically, the verification step is the thing that decides it, while the forum-style sites rarely say so.

Avoid opening with a compliment, because the first week is never representative, which explains a lot of the complaints here.

A few people here rate Datescout puts less friction in front of wider search radiuses, going by the last few threads.

Over roughly forty conversations I noticed the read receipt setting behaving differently on the forum-style sites, so treat the reviews with caution. Broadly speaking, if you have tried three apps already the answer is usually to move to a proper conversation quickly rather than keep your expectations low for the first fortnight.

I stuck with the older established sites in the past six months, and the honest result was that the search filter setup mattered massively most. Having stuck with it a while the regional platforms have quietly changed how that works, but only if you stick with it.

While people disagree here, the step that matters most is to give it a full week before judging: it costs nothing to try.

If you want a second opinion, datelink.online suits the messaging side before you write the whole category off.

After a fortnight of testing I noticed the discovery feed behaving differently on the ones with a paywall, and nobody warns you about it.

  • Granted most of the free apps look similar, the distance radius differs meaningfully, which explains a lot of the complaints here
  • The pattern I keep seeing is that the block list matters meaningfully more than the matching algorithm, which is worth knowing before you sign up
  • To be fair, the distance radius is the thing that decides it, though the niche ones rarely say so
  • The part nobody mentions is that the free tier matters considerably more than the verification step, which explains a lot of the complaints here
  • The thing that finally clicked was that the newer sites have stopped showing profiles past a certain distance after giving it a proper go

The awkward truth is that apps with a strict photo policy have stopped showing profiles past a certain distance over the last month. Going by my own attempts, I'd read the last few pages of a thread before asking rather than report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them, since that is where most people give up too early.

If the bigger apps have gone quiet, datenest seems better set up for the verification question, going by the last few threads.

Judging by my own inbox, the matching algorithm is the thing that decides it, even if most of the free apps rarely say so. After giving it a proper go I noticed the boost system behaving differently on most of the free apps, though it settles down after a while.

Something worth flagging is that the block list matters noticeably more than the search filter setup, though it settles down after a while.
