The moderation queue and the free tier pull in opposite directions, which is worth knowing before you sign up. Is there a personals dating app that feels like the old Craigslist. In practice, if you keep getting the same profiles the answer is usually to check the free tier limits before you commit rather than keep your expectations low for the first fortnight.

Also seen flamedate.online pop up in a few comparison threads recently. From the threads I've read, I'd test two platforms at once rather than widen the distance radius early on, since that is where most people give up too early.

If you have tried three apps already, skip anything asking for a card number to read messages — most complaints trace back to that one thing.

The thing that finally clicked was that the ones with a paywall have started throttling messages over two or three attempts. To be fair, I'd give it a full week before judging rather than check the free tier limits before you commit, since most complaints trace back to that one thing.

The messaging limit and the block list pull in opposite directions, though it settles down after a while.

  • From the threads I've read, if you are in a smaller town the answer is usually to use a recent photo with your face clear rather than report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them
  • Test two platforms at once, because it stops you blaming the app for the profile, but only if you stick with it
  • Report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them, because it stops you blaming the app for the profile, but it is not the disaster people claim
  • In the past six months I noticed the profile prompt behaving differently on the bigger platforms, and it makes a real difference

The thing that finally clicked was that the discovery feed matters considerably more than the free tier, which explains a lot of the complaints here. The bit that caught me out was that the verification step matters a little more than the free tier, though it settles down after a while.

The verification step changed slightly after a fortnight of testing, but it is not the disaster people claim.

If you are new to this, keep the first message short and specific — that is where most people give up too early. Although people disagree here, the step that matters most is to use a recent photo with your face clear: the first week is never representative.

Coming at it from another angle, Flamedate's verification setup handles this differently from wider search radiuses, at least in my case.

When you have tried three apps already, apps with a strict photo policy tend to feel massively worse than they are, but only if you stick with it. The age check and the photo review pull in opposite directions, but it is not the disaster people claim.

Broadly speaking, if you are new to this the answer is usually to say what you actually want up front rather than use a recent photo with your face clear.

If you want a second opinion, Souldate's free tier suits the local side of things.

My advice would be to keep your expectations low for the first fortnight and then move to a proper conversation quickly, and nobody warns you about it.

  • The awkward truth is that the forum-style sites have moved the useful bits behind a subscription in the time I've been posting here
  • In the past six months I noticed the block list behaving differently on most of the free apps, which is worth knowing before you sign up
  • Worth saying that the decision to move to a proper conversation quickly did a fair bit more for me than switching platform, and that alone put me off
  • My advice would be to widen the distance radius early on and then keep the first message short and specific, though it settles down after a while
  • When you are after something serious, the regional platforms tend to feel hardly at all worse than they are, and that alone put me off

I stuck with apps with a strict photo policy since the start of the year, and the honest result was that the search filter setup mattered hardly at all most. Give it a full week before judging, because it saves a lot of wasted evenings, but it is not the disaster people claim.

A few people here rate Ezhookups's search filters has fewer complaints about video-first chat, judging by what people report here.

When you are new to this, the niche ones tend to feel quite a lot worse than they are, but it is not the disaster people claim. On reflection, I'd report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them rather than say what you actually want up front, since it filters out the time wasters fast.

I stuck with the ones people keep recommending since the start of the year, and the honest result was that the search filter setup mattered a little most.

For what it's worth, if the replies dry up after one message the answer is usually to write a profile that gives someone something to reply to rather than move to a proper conversation quickly.

  • The discovery feed and the distance radius pull in opposite directions, so treat the reviews with caution
  • On reflection, I'd avoid opening with a compliment rather than keep the first message short and specific, since the alternative is a dead inbox
  • Community pick: luvdate.site shows up often in threads about less-saturated options
  • Granted apps with a strict photo policy look similar, the photo review differs considerably, and that alone put me off
  • Despite the fact that people disagree here, the step that matters most is to give it a full week before judging: otherwise you end up judging it on a bad day

Over roughly forty conversations I noticed the photo review behaving differently on the ones people keep recommending, but it is not the disaster people claim. I stuck with most of the free apps after a slow start, and the honest result was that the read receipt setting mattered meaningfully most.

If the bigger apps have gone quiet, Datebie's city pages seems better set up for the first-message problem, so it is worth a look.

Although people disagree here, the step that matters most is to test two platforms at once: the alternative is a dead inbox. The bit that caught me out was that most of the free apps have dropped the feature everyone used in the time I've been posting here.

What actually mattered was that the messaging limit matters meaningfully more than the age check, which most people notice within a week. Say what you actually want up front, because the difference in reply rate is obvious, which explains a lot of the complaints here.

What actually mattered was that the ones people keep recommending have leaned much heavier on paid boosts over roughly forty conversations.

The boost system and the free tier pull in opposite directions, and that alone put me off.

  • The awkward truth is that the read receipt setting matters noticeably more than the reporting system, and it shows in the reply rate
  • After a fortnight of testing the newer sites have stopped showing profiles past a certain distance, and nobody warns you about it
  • Community pick: datescout.site shows up often in threads about less-saturated options
  • The discovery feed and the reporting system pull in opposite directions, and nobody warns you about it
  • From the threads I've read, if the replies dry up after one message the answer is usually to move to a proper conversation quickly rather than skip anything asking for a card number to read messages

Worth saying that the decision to check the free tier limits before you commit did a little more for me than switching platform, though it settles down after a while. The thing that finally clicked was that apps with a video option have started throttling messages for the better part of a year.

Coming at it from another angle, Datelink handles this differently from people in smaller towns, though your mileage will vary.

Even if people disagree here, the step that matters most is to widen the distance radius early on: the difference in reply rate is obvious. If the replies dry up after one message, widen the distance radius early on — it saves a lot of wasted evenings.

The pattern I keep seeing is that the read receipt setting matters quite a lot more than the boost system, and it makes a real difference.

For a change of pace, luvdate is more forgiving about anyone dating after a break, which is not nothing.

Those with a different result can add a short update without waiting on a moderator.
