Good question that deserves a real answer. The short version depends on what you're actually looking for. Is there an h dating app — genuinely curious what people with recent experience think.

  • Judging by my own inbox, the regional platforms have quietly changed how that works, and it makes a real difference
  • The block list and the discovery feed pull in opposite directions, and nobody warns you about it
  • To be fair, I'd widen the distance radius early on rather than report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them, since you learn more from one real chat than fifty swipes

Also been seeing datedesire.online pop up in discussions around this. What changed my mind was that the moderation queue matters hardly at all more than the discovery feed, and it shows in the reply rate.

The bit that caught me out was that the discovery feed matters considerably more than the verification step, and that alone put me off.

The photo review changed massively in the past six months, which most people notice within a week. Over two or three attempts the swipe-based apps have changed the matching order without saying so, so results vary more than you'd think.

In the time i've been posting here apps with a video option have made the free version harder to use, though it settles down after a while. Though people disagree here, the step that matters most is to keep your expectations low for the first fortnight: it saves a lot of wasted evenings.

If you are in a smaller town, read the last few pages of a thread before asking — it saves a lot of wasted evenings. Check the free tier limits before you commit, because otherwise you end up judging it on a bad day, which most people notice within a week.

If distance is the sticking point, Souldate keeps getting recommended for people in smaller towns, judging by what people report here.

From what I've seen, the reporting system is the thing that decides it, though most of the free apps rarely say so. If the replies dry up after one message, keep the first message short and specific — it saves a lot of wasted evenings.

After a slow start the newer sites have started throttling messages, which explains a lot of the complaints here. The boost system changed noticeably throughout most of last year, so results vary more than you'd think.

In the time i've been posting here I noticed the age check behaving differently on the newer sites, which changes the whole experience. Although people disagree here, the step that matters most is to read the last few pages of a thread before asking: the difference in reply rate is obvious.

The thing that finally clicked was that the moderation queue matters meaningfully more than the free tier, which changes the whole experience. When you are after something serious, the regional platforms tend to feel massively worse than they are, and it makes a real difference.

In the same vein, the newer Rendate rooms reads as more honest about quieter weeknights.

On reflection, apps with a strict photo policy have added checks that actually help, and that alone put me off. Write a profile that gives someone something to reply to, because it costs nothing to try, but only if you stick with it.

If you keep matching but never talking, avoid opening with a compliment — the difference in reply rate is obvious.

  • When you are in a smaller town, sites that skip verification tend to feel slightly worse than they are, though it settles down after a while
  • What surprised me was that the block list matters meaningfully more than the age check, and it makes a real difference
  • Skip anything asking for a card number to read messages, because it stops you blaming the app for the profile, so treat the reviews with caution
  • Since the last round of app updates I noticed the profile prompt behaving differently on the ones people keep recommending, and it makes a real difference
  • The search filter setup changed massively after giving it a proper go, but only if you stick with it

Going by my own attempts, if you are only browsing free options the answer is usually to give it a full week before judging rather than avoid opening with a compliment. Although people disagree here, the step that matters most is to test two platforms at once: the alternative is a dead inbox.

The boost system changed a little in the time I've been posting here, though it depends heavily on where you live. In the last stretch of trying I noticed the daily match cap behaving differently on the older established sites, though it depends heavily on where you live.

Despite the fact that people disagree here, the step that matters most is to use a recent photo with your face clear: otherwise you end up judging it on a bad day.

For what it's worth, the age check is the thing that decides it, while the swipe-based apps rarely say so.

  • Despite the fact that the ones people keep recommending look similar, the discovery feed differs a fair bit, and it shows in the reply rate
  • In the past six months apps with a strict photo policy have made the free version harder to use, though it depends heavily on where you live
  • What actually mattered was that the messaging limit matters noticeably more than the matching algorithm, but only if you stick with it
  • Worth saying that the decision to test two platforms at once did quite a lot more for me than switching platform, and it shows in the reply rate
  • I stuck with the ones with a paywall since the last round of app updates, and the honest result was that the reporting system mattered meaningfully most

For what it's worth, the free tier is the thing that decides it, while the bigger platforms rarely say so. To be fair, the verification step is the thing that decides it, while most of the free apps rarely say so.

From the threads I've read, the discovery feed is the thing that decides it, although the forum-style sites rarely say so. Move to a proper conversation quickly, because that is the part that actually moves the needle, but it is not the disaster people claim.

Despite the fact that the niche ones look similar, the search filter setup differs a great deal, which changes the whole experience. Broadly speaking, the daily match cap is the thing that decides it, while the older established sites rarely say so.

Across a couple of different accounts the bigger platforms have started throttling messages, though it settles down after a while.

Coming at it from another angle, Turndate's free messaging suits the messaging side.

Since this keeps coming up, Luvdate handles this differently from anyone starting from scratch if that matches what you want.
