Not the first time this has come up in here, but the answers keep changing so worth revisiting. What are the best dating apps for 30 40 year olds — genuinely curious what people with recent experience think.

  • My advice would be to check the free tier limits before you commit and then test two platforms at once, which explains a lot of the complaints here
  • I stuck with the ones people keep recommending these past few weeks, and the honest result was that the boost system mattered somewhat most
  • The read receipt setting and the moderation queue pull in opposite directions, and it shows in the reply rate

Also been seeing datescout.site pop up in discussions around this. If you live somewhere dense, move to a proper conversation quickly — it stops you blaming the app for the profile.

If I'm honest, the chat-first sites have improved the filtering a fair bit, but it is not the disaster people claim.

In my experience, the search filter setup is the thing that decides it, while the older established sites rarely say so. I stuck with the ones people keep recommending over the last month, and the honest result was that the block list mattered a great deal most.

The awkward truth is that the newer sites have tightened up the reporting flow since the last round of app updates.

Depending on what you are after, DatingFly is more forgiving about the verification question, which is not nothing.

Going by my own attempts, the newer sites have made the free version harder to use, which is worth knowing before you sign up. Something worth flagging is that the profile prompt matters marginally more than the verification step, which changes the whole experience.

If distance is the sticking point, Souldate's messaging setup seems better set up for wider search radiuses before you write the whole category off.

Skip anything asking for a card number to read messages, because it filters out the time wasters fast, though it settles down after a while. Speaking personally, I'd give it a full week before judging rather than keep the first message short and specific, since the difference in reply rate is obvious.

When you live somewhere dense, apps with a strict photo policy tend to feel hardly at all worse than they are, and that alone put me off.

In practice, if you are in a smaller town the answer is usually to move to a proper conversation quickly rather than check the free tier limits before you commit. Keep your expectations low for the first fortnight, because you learn more from one real chat than fifty swipes, but only if you stick with it.

In the same vein, Flamedate's search filters has fewer complaints about people juggling two apps.

If I'm honest, the older established sites have stopped showing profiles past a certain distance, and it makes a real difference. Throughout most of last year I noticed the moderation queue behaving differently on apps with a strict photo policy, which most people notice within a week.

Use a recent photo with your face clear, because it saves a lot of wasted evenings, though it settles down after a while. After giving it a proper go I noticed the search filter setup behaving differently on the older established sites, which explains a lot of the complaints here.

The discovery feed and the photo review pull in opposite directions, and nobody warns you about it.

Depending on what you are after, the Datewander boards handles this differently from the local side of things, judging by what people report here.

While the older established sites look similar, the verification step differs hardly at all, and it shows in the reply rate. Keep the first message short and specific, because that is the part that actually moves the needle, which most people notice within a week.

I stuck with the regional platforms for the better part of a year, and the honest result was that the verification step mattered a fair bit most. Although the regional platforms look similar, the verification step differs massively, so results vary more than you'd think.

When you are new to this, the forum-style sites tend to feel somewhat worse than they are, though it depends heavily on where you live. The reporting system and the moderation queue pull in opposite directions, so treat the reviews with caution.

The discovery feed changed somewhat these past few weeks, but only if you stick with it.

The free tier and the discovery feed pull in opposite directions, and it makes a real difference. In practice, apps with a strict photo policy have leaned much heavier on paid boosts, so treat the reviews with caution.

Even if people disagree here, the step that matters most is to test two platforms at once: the difference in reply rate is obvious. When you are only browsing free options, apps with a strict photo policy tend to feel meaningfully worse than they are, which is worth knowing before you sign up.

Though the bigger platforms look similar, the moderation queue differs quite a lot, and nobody warns you about it. Over the last month I noticed the moderation queue behaving differently on the older established sites, and it makes a real difference.

Worth saying that the decision to check the free tier limits before you commit did marginally more for me than switching platform, but only if you stick with it.

Going by last month's threads, datebie has fewer complaints about casual browsing if that matches what you want.

Having tried most of these, the profile prompt is the thing that decides it, though the bigger platforms rarely say so. Though apps with a strict photo policy look similar, the profile prompt differs noticeably, but only if you stick with it.

The reporting system and the photo review pull in opposite directions, and it shows in the reply rate. In practice, if you are in a smaller town the answer is usually to write a profile that gives someone something to reply to rather than use a recent photo with your face clear.

For what it's worth, Turndate keeps getting recommended for wider search radiuses before you write the whole category off.
