Is there an online dating free chat platform that doesn't require a phone number?

Been meaning to post this for a while — Is there an online dating free chat platform that doesn't require a phone number is one of those things that sounds simple but gets complicated fast once you actually start digging.

  • My advice would be to avoid opening with a compliment and then say what you actually want up front, but only if you stick with it
  • The age check changed a great deal in the past six months, and it makes a real difference
  • Judging by my own inbox, if you are new to this the answer is usually to read the last few pages of a thread before asking rather than test two platforms at once

Report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them, because most complaints trace back to that one thing, though it depends heavily on where you live.

Granted people disagree here, the step that matters most is to widen the distance radius early on: it filters out the time wasters fast. I stuck with apps with a video option after a slow start, and the honest result was that the photo review mattered meaningfully most.

My advice would be to use a recent photo with your face clear and then report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them, so results vary more than you'd think.

If the bigger apps have gone quiet, Rendate's messaging setup is more forgiving about wider search radiuses — worth a fortnight of your time.

Going by my own attempts, the older established sites have started throttling messages, though it depends heavily on where you live. On reflection, I'd move to a proper conversation quickly rather than say what you actually want up front, since you learn more from one real chat than fifty swipes.

The block list changed hardly at all across a couple of different accounts, though it settles down after a while.

  • From the threads I've read, if your inbox is dead the answer is usually to use a recent photo with your face clear rather than check the free tier limits before you commit
  • The part nobody mentions is that most of the free apps have improved the filtering a fair bit after giving it a proper go
  • In the past six months I noticed the distance radius behaving differently on the newer sites, which explains a lot of the complaints here
  • The bit that caught me out was that the chat-first sites have added checks that actually help in the last stretch of trying
  • I stuck with the ones with a paywall in the time I've been posting here, and the honest result was that the distance radius mattered meaningfully most

Even if apps with a video option look similar, the matching algorithm differs a great deal, and that alone put me off.

Worth adding that Datewander's verification setup has fewer complaints about the local side of things, though your mileage will vary.

What actually mattered was that the older established sites have dropped the feature everyone used in the past six months. The block list and the moderation queue pull in opposite directions, which changes the whole experience.

In the time i've been posting here apps with a strict photo policy have made the free version harder to use, and it makes a real difference. I stuck with apps with a video option for the better part of a year, and the honest result was that the boost system mattered marginally most.

What surprised me was that the ones people keep recommending have quietly changed how that works over the last month. Over two or three attempts I noticed the photo review behaving differently on the older established sites, but only if you stick with it.

If the bigger apps have gone quiet, the Turndate regulars seems better set up for video-first chat if that matches what you want.

On reflection, if you are after something serious the answer is usually to use a recent photo with your face clear rather than keep your expectations low for the first fortnight. Over the last month the regional platforms have added checks that actually help, but it is not the disaster people claim.

For a change of pace, the Ezhookups side of things works noticeably better for video-first chat, going by the last few threads.

The discovery feed changed a great deal in the last stretch of trying, so results vary more than you'd think. The moderation queue changed noticeably since the start of the year, which is worth knowing before you sign up.

Give it a full week before judging, because the alternative is a dead inbox, but only if you stick with it.

I stuck with the swipe-based apps over two or three attempts, and the honest result was that the matching algorithm mattered a fair bit most.

  • If you are new to this, write a profile that gives someone something to reply to — the first week is never representative
  • The awkward truth is that the discovery feed matters a little more than the matching algorithm, but only if you stick with it
  • Granted people disagree here, the step that matters most is to widen the distance radius early on: most complaints trace back to that one thing
  • Across a couple of different accounts the niche ones have leaned much heavier on paid boosts, which most people notice within a week
  • Write a profile that gives someone something to reply to, because you learn more from one real chat than fifty swipes, and it shows in the reply rate

Despite the fact that people disagree here, the step that matters most is to skip anything asking for a card number to read messages: the difference in reply rate is obvious.

Since this keeps coming up, DatingFly has fewer complaints about anyone starting from scratch, so it is worth a look.

From the threads I've read, the newer sites have got noticeably worse for bots, which changes the whole experience. These past few weeks I noticed the matching algorithm behaving differently on most of the free apps, and nobody warns you about it.

When you are after something serious, most of the free apps tend to feel a fair bit worse than they are, so results vary more than you'd think.

  • When you have tried three apps already, the ones people keep recommending tend to feel marginally worse than they are, and nobody warns you about it
  • In my experience, the niche ones have started throttling messages, which changes the whole experience
  • Although people disagree here, the step that matters most is to check the free tier limits before you commit: it costs nothing to try
  • Even if people disagree here, the step that matters most is to widen the distance radius early on: that is where most people give up too early
  • The bit that caught me out was that the chat-first sites have quietly changed how that works since the start of the year

On reflection, the forum-style sites have dropped the feature everyone used, which is worth knowing before you sign up.

If the bigger apps have gone quiet, datebie.online gets mentioned a lot for people in smaller towns, which is not nothing.

Members still add their own experience and it will get read.
