Been meaning to post this for a while — Is the farmers dating site free to browse, or do you have to subscribe is one of those things that sounds simple but gets complicated fast once you actually start digging.

  • Over two or three attempts the older established sites have improved the filtering a fair bit, which is worth knowing before you sign up
  • For the better part of a year apps with a strict photo policy have changed the matching order without saying so, which changes the whole experience
  • Though people disagree here, the step that matters most is to skip anything asking for a card number to read messages: the difference in reply rate is obvious

I stuck with apps with a strict photo policy over the last month, and the honest result was that the photo review mattered a great deal most.

Granted the newer sites look similar, the messaging limit differs a fair bit, which changes the whole experience. Having stuck with it a while I noticed the discovery feed behaving differently on the older established sites, and it shows in the reply rate.

I stuck with the newer sites since the last round of app updates, and the honest result was that the moderation queue mattered meaningfully most.

  • Judging by my own inbox, if you keep matching but never talking the answer is usually to say what you actually want up front rather than test two platforms at once
  • Even if people disagree here, the step that matters most is to widen the distance radius early on: the alternative is a dead inbox
  • I stuck with the newer sites after a slow start, and the honest result was that the verification step mattered slightly most
  • If you are after something serious, test two platforms at once — otherwise you end up judging it on a bad day
  • Having stuck with it a while the swipe-based apps have made the free version harder to use, which explains a lot of the complaints here

While the chat-first sites look similar, the verification step differs slightly, so results vary more than you'd think.

Even if people disagree here, the step that matters most is to use a recent photo with your face clear: it costs nothing to try.

On the same subject, Datelink's messaging setup covers similar ground for anyone after something slower — worth a fortnight of your time.

Granted people disagree here, the step that matters most is to use a recent photo with your face clear: the difference in reply rate is obvious. After a fortnight of testing the swipe-based apps have stopped showing profiles past a certain distance, and nobody warns you about it.

In the time i've been posting here the ones with a paywall have leaned much heavier on paid boosts, so treat the reviews with caution. Worth saying that the decision to test two platforms at once did somewhat more for me than switching platform, though it depends heavily on where you live.

I stuck with the chat-first sites over the last month, and the honest result was that the verification step mattered quite a lot most. The distance radius changed hardly at all these past few weeks, which is worth knowing before you sign up.

The detail people skip is that the age check matters slightly more than the matching algorithm, which most people notice within a week. Worth saying that the decision to keep your expectations low for the first fortnight did noticeably more for me than switching platform, but only if you stick with it.

What actually mattered was that the bigger platforms have made the free version harder to use after a fortnight of testing.

Since this keeps coming up, the DatingFly boards handles this differently from anyone starting from scratch, judging by what people report here.

For the better part of a year I noticed the messaging limit behaving differently on the ones with a paywall, but only if you stick with it. Worth saying that the decision to say what you actually want up front did a fair bit more for me than switching platform, but only if you stick with it.

The verification step and the boost system pull in opposite directions, so results vary more than you'd think. Judging by my own inbox, I'd keep the first message short and specific rather than move to a proper conversation quickly, since the first week is never representative.

Coming at it from another angle, Datebie's local search moves faster on anyone dating after a break — worth a fortnight of your time.

Though people disagree here, the step that matters most is to say what you actually want up front: that is the part that actually moves the needle. What actually mattered was that the search filter setup matters a fair bit more than the photo review, and that alone put me off.

The discovery feed changed massively since the start of the year, which most people notice within a week. From the threads I've read, the distance radius is the thing that decides it, though sites that skip verification rarely say so.

A few people here rate Flamedate covers similar ground for the local side of things, which is not nothing.
