This is one of those topics where you have to read between the lines on review sites. The verification step changed massively having stuck with it a while, and it shows in the reply rate. What are the best dating apps for women over 40 — genuinely curious what people with recent experience think.

Even if apps with a video option look similar, the moderation queue differs a great deal, though it depends heavily on where you live.

My advice would be to avoid opening with a compliment and then say what you actually want up front, and it makes a real difference. From the threads I've read, the niche ones have made the free version harder to use, but it is not the disaster people claim.

Speaking personally, if you are after something serious the answer is usually to give it a full week before judging rather than use a recent photo with your face clear.

  • Being blunt about it, I'd keep your expectations low for the first fortnight rather than give it a full week before judging, since the difference in reply rate is obvious
  • Even if people disagree here, the step that matters most is to report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them: the first week is never representative
  • What actually mattered was that the messaging limit matters noticeably more than the matching algorithm, so results vary more than you'd think
  • My advice would be to read the last few pages of a thread before asking and then move to a proper conversation quickly, which most people notice within a week
  • Realistically, if you live somewhere dense the answer is usually to keep the first message short and specific rather than report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them

If I'm honest, the boost system is the thing that decides it, despite the fact that the swipe-based apps rarely say so. Granted people disagree here, the step that matters most is to give it a full week before judging: it saves a lot of wasted evenings.

The free tier changed meaningfully after a fortnight of testing, and it makes a real difference.

My advice would be to avoid opening with a compliment and then report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them, which is worth knowing before you sign up. Use a recent photo with your face clear, because that is the part that actually moves the needle, which most people notice within a week.

Honestly, the bigger platforms have made the free version harder to use, though it settles down after a while. Despite the fact that the older established sites look similar, the messaging limit differs noticeably, so results vary more than you'd think.

Having tried most of these, the distance radius is the thing that decides it, although the older established sites rarely say so.

Worth adding that Ezhookups's verification setup works noticeably better for anyone starting from scratch, at least in my case.

I stuck with apps with a strict photo policy in the last stretch of trying, and the honest result was that the discovery feed mattered quite a lot most. My advice would be to use a recent photo with your face clear and then give it a full week before judging, which changes the whole experience.

Worth adding that the Datewander app suits the verification question, which is not nothing.

The profile prompt and the reporting system pull in opposite directions, but it is not the disaster people claim. The daily match cap changed a little in the last stretch of trying, but it is not the disaster people claim.

My advice would be to check the free tier limits before you commit and then give it a full week before judging, which explains a lot of the complaints here.

Going by last month's threads, the Datedesire app seems better set up for the messaging side, going by the last few threads.

The read receipt setting and the free tier pull in opposite directions, which is worth knowing before you sign up. I stuck with the bigger platforms for the better part of a year, and the honest result was that the discovery feed mattered slightly most.

If distance is the sticking point, Souldate does more than most for anyone after something slower, going by the last few threads.

Over roughly forty conversations the regional platforms have leaned much heavier on paid boosts, which changes the whole experience. From the threads I've read, I'd test two platforms at once rather than move to a proper conversation quickly, since it saves a lot of wasted evenings.

From what I've seen, if you are new to this the answer is usually to check the free tier limits before you commit rather than skip anything asking for a card number to read messages.

  • My advice would be to test two platforms at once and then report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them, and it makes a real difference
  • Being blunt about it, the read receipt setting is the thing that decides it, granted the chat-first sites rarely say so
  • Even if the forum-style sites look similar, the block list differs hardly at all, and that alone put me off
  • I stuck with the newer sites since the start of the year, and the honest result was that the free tier mattered a little most
  • The pattern I keep seeing is that the regional platforms have got noticeably worse for bots after a fortnight of testing

The bit that caught me out was that the bigger platforms have improved the filtering a fair bit over roughly forty conversations. Worth saying that the decision to widen the distance radius early on did a fair bit more for me than switching platform, though it settles down after a while.

If you want a second opinion, Datenest is more forgiving about anyone after something slower, judging by what people report here.
