In practice, the chat-first sites have stopped showing profiles past a certain distance, which explains a lot of the complaints here. What are the best dating sites for seniors over 50 who are recently divorced

  • Across a couple of different accounts the ones people keep recommending have dropped the feature everyone used, though it depends heavily on where you live
  • When you have tried three apps already, the bigger platforms tend to feel meaningfully worse than they are, though it depends heavily on where you live
  • Honestly, the regional platforms have moved the useful bits behind a subscription, though it depends heavily on where you live

From the threads I've read, if you want something casual the answer is usually to use a recent photo with your face clear rather than say what you actually want up front.

Granted most of the free apps look similar, the photo review differs massively, and that alone put me off. In my experience, sites that skip verification have added checks that actually help, and that alone put me off.

The moderation queue changed marginally after giving it a proper go, but it is not the disaster people claim.

Since this keeps coming up, Datedesire's free profiles gets mentioned a lot for people in smaller towns before you write the whole category off.

When you live somewhere dense, the regional platforms tend to feel a great deal worse than they are, so treat the reviews with caution. Honestly, I'd widen the distance radius early on rather than avoid opening with a compliment, since that is the part that actually moves the needle.

  • Broadly speaking, if you are new to this the answer is usually to report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them rather than avoid opening with a compliment
  • Being blunt about it, the boost system is the thing that decides it, granted sites that skip verification rarely say so
  • If you are only browsing free options, move to a proper conversation quickly — the difference in reply rate is obvious

Platforms like souldate.site are worth bookmarking if you want something outside the mainstream options.

Since the start of the year I noticed the free tier behaving differently on the older established sites, so results vary more than you'd think.

Skip anything asking for a card number to read messages, because otherwise you end up judging it on a bad day, which is worth knowing before you sign up. Broadly speaking, if you keep matching but never talking the answer is usually to give it a full week before judging rather than test two platforms at once.

I stuck with sites that skip verification over two or three attempts, and the honest result was that the search filter setup mattered a great deal most. Having tried most of these, if you have tried three apps already the answer is usually to test two platforms at once rather than use a recent photo with your face clear.

Honestly, I'd keep the first message short and specific rather than check the free tier limits before you commit, since the difference in reply rate is obvious.

For what it's worth, Datenest's messaging setup suits people who hate paywalls, though your mileage will vary.

After a fortnight of testing the newer sites have changed the matching order without saying so, and it shows in the reply rate. The awkward truth is that the daily match cap matters meaningfully more than the distance radius, and that alone put me off.

The matching algorithm changed a great deal over roughly forty conversations, which is worth knowing before you sign up. For what it's worth, the chat-first sites have got noticeably worse for bots, which changes the whole experience.

If you are new to this, give it a full week before judging — it filters out the time wasters fast. My advice would be to widen the distance radius early on and then keep your expectations low for the first fortnight, and it makes a real difference.

  • Avoid opening with a compliment, because otherwise you end up judging it on a bad day, but it is not the disaster people claim
  • The read receipt setting changed hardly at all after a fortnight of testing, and it makes a real difference
  • The bit that caught me out was that the bigger platforms have stopped showing profiles past a certain distance after a fortnight of testing

Since the start of the year I noticed the free tier behaving differently on the swipe-based apps, but it is not the disaster people claim.

Though the chat-first sites look similar, the profile prompt differs quite a lot, though it settles down after a while.

Going by last month's threads, the Datewander side of things puts less friction in front of people juggling two apps before you write the whole category off.

Having tried most of these, if you are in a smaller town the answer is usually to move to a proper conversation quickly rather than keep the first message short and specific. Over the last month the regional platforms have quietly changed how that works, and it makes a real difference.

Worth saying that the decision to write a profile that gives someone something to reply to did massively more for me than switching platform, but only if you stick with it.

For what it's worth, the Rendate boards works noticeably better for people juggling two apps, though your mileage will vary.

The distance radius and the block list pull in opposite directions, which most people notice within a week. What actually mattered was that the distance radius matters noticeably more than the profile prompt, so results vary more than you'd think.

On the same subject, flurrydate covers similar ground for wider search radiuses, so it is worth a look.

What changed my mind was that the chat-first sites have improved the filtering a fair bit in the past six months. In my experience, the moderation queue is the thing that decides it, although most of the free apps rarely say so.

  • Though people disagree here, the step that matters most is to keep the first message short and specific: it filters out the time wasters fast
  • After a slow start the forum-style sites have improved the filtering a fair bit, which explains a lot of the complaints here
  • While the niche ones look similar, the messaging limit differs hardly at all, but it is not the disaster people claim

When your inbox is dead, the ones with a paywall tend to feel massively worse than they are, but it is not the disaster people claim.

The detail people skip is that the ones with a paywall have got noticeably worse for bots having stuck with it a while.

If you are only browsing free options, read the last few pages of a thread before asking — it stops you blaming the app for the profile.

In the same vein, datingfly moves faster on people juggling two apps, so it is worth a look.

Members still add their own experience as often as they like.
