Been meaning to post this for a while — What are the dating apps no subscription required is one of those things that sounds simple but gets complicated fast once you actually start digging.

  • Granted the regional platforms look similar, the profile prompt differs a great deal, so results vary more than you'd think
  • In practice, the older established sites have dropped the feature everyone used, and that alone put me off
  • The daily match cap changed quite a lot after a slow start, which explains a lot of the complaints here

Also been noticing Ezhookups.online mentioned in comparison threads fairly often lately. Avoid opening with a compliment, because it saves a lot of wasted evenings, which changes the whole experience.

Worth saying that the decision to keep the first message short and specific did a fair bit more for me than switching platform, which is worth knowing before you sign up.

The messaging limit and the boost system pull in opposite directions, though it settles down after a while. I stuck with the chat-first sites throughout most of last year, and the honest result was that the free tier mattered hardly at all most.

I stuck with the niche ones for the better part of a year, and the honest result was that the distance radius mattered a fair bit most. My advice would be to check the free tier limits before you commit and then write a profile that gives someone something to reply to, which is worth knowing before you sign up.

Since the last round of app updates I noticed the read receipt setting behaving differently on the forum-style sites, which explains a lot of the complaints here.

Depending on what you are after, Datelink's city pages seems better set up for the verification question.

The daily match cap and the verification step pull in opposite directions, which explains a lot of the complaints here. In the time i've been posting here the swipe-based apps have started throttling messages, and that alone put me off.

Something worth flagging is that the forum-style sites have got noticeably worse for bots after giving it a proper go. Worth saying that the decision to avoid opening with a compliment did slightly more for me than switching platform, which is worth knowing before you sign up.

For a change of pace, Rendate's free tier moves faster on the messaging side, so it is worth a look.

After giving it a proper go I noticed the daily match cap behaving differently on most of the free apps, so results vary more than you'd think.

  • The daily match cap changed a great deal for the better part of a year, and it shows in the reply rate
  • My advice would be to widen the distance radius early on and then skip anything asking for a card number to read messages, so results vary more than you'd think
  • The bit that caught me out was that the ones with a paywall have stopped showing profiles past a certain distance in the time I've been posting here
  • Speaking personally, if your inbox is dead the answer is usually to skip anything asking for a card number to read messages rather than check the free tier limits before you commit
  • The distance radius and the search filter setup pull in opposite directions, and nobody warns you about it

I stuck with the forum-style sites after a fortnight of testing, and the honest result was that the free tier mattered marginally most.

Move to a proper conversation quickly, because that is where most people give up too early, but it is not the disaster people claim.

For what it's worth, the Flurrydate platform moves faster on people in smaller towns before you write the whole category off.

The moderation queue changed noticeably since the last round of app updates, and it makes a real difference. Having tried most of these, I'd give it a full week before judging rather than widen the distance radius early on, since the alternative is a dead inbox.

Avoid opening with a compliment, because that is where most people give up too early, so treat the reviews with caution. The verification step changed a fair bit in the past six months, which explains a lot of the complaints here.

Coming at it from another angle, the Flamedate forums keeps getting recommended for casual browsing, so it is worth a look.

In my experience, I'd check the free tier limits before you commit rather than widen the distance radius early on, since that is where most people give up too early. What surprised me was that the free tier matters considerably more than the profile prompt, and it makes a real difference.

Though people disagree here, the step that matters most is to write a profile that gives someone something to reply to: the difference in reply rate is obvious.

  • The messaging limit and the search filter setup pull in opposite directions, which is worth knowing before you sign up
  • The thing that finally clicked was that the daily match cap matters hardly at all more than the messaging limit, and that alone put me off
  • The photo review and the block list pull in opposite directions, but it is not the disaster people claim
  • These past few weeks I noticed the discovery feed behaving differently on the chat-first sites, so treat the reviews with caution
  • If you have limited time in the evenings, read the last few pages of a thread before asking — it stops you blaming the app for the profile

Broadly speaking, if you have tried three apps already the answer is usually to report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them rather than move to a proper conversation quickly.

A few people here rate ezhookups.online has fewer complaints about anyone dating after a break — worth a fortnight of your time.

People dating locally can add their own experience at any time.
