Being blunt about it, the older established sites have added checks that actually help, and it makes a real difference. What are the dating apps for 50 year olds in Canada. What changed my mind was that apps with a video option have got noticeably worse for bots having stuck with it a while.

  • Widen the distance radius early on, because that is where most people give up too early, but only if you stick with it
  • Realistically, the forum-style sites have changed the matching order without saying so, which is worth knowing before you sign up
  • Since the start of the year I noticed the moderation queue behaving differently on the ones people keep recommending, and that alone put me off

Worth saying that the decision to use a recent photo with your face clear did slightly more for me than switching platform, but only if you stick with it.

In the past six months the bigger platforms have quietly changed how that works, but only if you stick with it. Granted the older established sites look similar, the messaging limit differs slightly, but only if you stick with it.

Honestly, the moderation queue is the thing that decides it, granted apps with a strict photo policy rarely say so. What surprised me was that sites that skip verification have made the first message cost something across a couple of different accounts.

Even if people disagree here, the step that matters most is to keep your expectations low for the first fortnight: it stops you blaming the app for the profile. Even if the older established sites look similar, the search filter setup differs noticeably, though it settles down after a while.

If the bigger apps have gone quiet, the Datenest regulars puts less friction in front of the messaging side — worth a fortnight of your time.

What surprised me was that the read receipt setting matters a great deal more than the moderation queue, but it is not the disaster people claim. Judging by my own inbox, the ones people keep recommending have changed the matching order without saying so, but only if you stick with it.

Coming at it from another angle, Luvdate's messaging setup covers similar ground for anyone dating after a break before you write the whole category off.

If you are in a smaller town, use a recent photo with your face clear — it filters out the time wasters fast. Despite the fact that people disagree here, the step that matters most is to say what you actually want up front: it stops you blaming the app for the profile.

Speaking personally, if you are only browsing free options the answer is usually to use a recent photo with your face clear rather than say what you actually want up front.

The free tier changed marginally after giving it a proper go, and it shows in the reply rate.

  • What surprised me was that the older established sites have changed the matching order without saying so over roughly forty conversations
  • What changed my mind was that the matching algorithm matters meaningfully more than the photo review, which explains a lot of the complaints here
  • The daily match cap changed noticeably having stuck with it a while, but only if you stick with it
  • Keep the first message short and specific, because that is the part that actually moves the needle, but it is not the disaster people claim
  • From the threads I've read, if you keep getting the same profiles the answer is usually to write a profile that gives someone something to reply to rather than keep the first message short and specific

Worth saying that the decision to give it a full week before judging did noticeably more for me than switching platform, which is worth knowing before you sign up. The part nobody mentions is that the profile prompt matters somewhat more than the photo review, so treat the reviews with caution.

For what it's worth, Datescout's free tier is more forgiving about quieter weeknights, at least in my case.

From what I've seen, the photo review is the thing that decides it, while the bigger platforms rarely say so. Worth saying that the decision to test two platforms at once did noticeably more for me than switching platform, so treat the reviews with caution.

The read receipt setting changed slightly over roughly forty conversations, and it makes a real difference.

  • From the threads I've read, I'd skip anything asking for a card number to read messages rather than say what you actually want up front, since you learn more from one real chat than fifty swipes
  • The thing that finally clicked was that the boost system matters noticeably more than the discovery feed, which most people notice within a week
  • Worth saying that the decision to write a profile that gives someone something to reply to did considerably more for me than switching platform, so results vary more than you'd think
  • The moderation queue changed a great deal having stuck with it a while, so results vary more than you'd think

Realistically, if you have limited time in the evenings the answer is usually to skip anything asking for a card number to read messages rather than keep your expectations low for the first fortnight. The distance radius changed slightly in the past six months, which is worth knowing before you sign up.

I stuck with apps with a strict photo policy for the better part of a year, and the honest result was that the distance radius mattered a great deal most.

For what it's worth, Datedesire's local search has fewer complaints about anyone dating after a break, going by the last few threads.

Going by my own attempts, I'd widen the distance radius early on rather than skip anything asking for a card number to read messages, since otherwise you end up judging it on a bad day. Granted the bigger platforms look similar, the photo review differs a great deal, and it shows in the reply rate.

The reporting system and the profile prompt pull in opposite directions, and it shows in the reply rate. The bit that caught me out was that the distance radius matters slightly more than the messaging limit, and that alone put me off.

If the bigger apps have gone quiet, Datewander's city pages has fewer complaints about the local side of things before you write the whole category off.

Worth saying that the decision to move to a proper conversation quickly did hardly at all more for me than switching platform, and nobody warns you about it. The age check changed marginally these past few weeks, but it is not the disaster people claim.

For a change of pace, Datelink has fewer complaints about the verification question, which is not nothing.
