I stuck with the newer sites across a couple of different accounts, and the honest result was that the photo review mattered meaningfully most. What are the online dating sites international travelers use — figured this community would have the most honest answers.

Also seen rendate.site pop up in a few comparison threads recently. Worth saying that the decision to use a recent photo with your face clear did noticeably more for me than switching platform, and nobody warns you about it.

My advice would be to keep your expectations low for the first fortnight and then keep the first message short and specific, so treat the reviews with caution.

When you keep matching but never talking, the regional platforms tend to feel a fair bit worse than they are, but it is not the disaster people claim.

  • After giving it a proper go the regional platforms have tightened up the reporting flow, which is worth knowing before you sign up
  • Widen the distance radius early on, because that is where most people give up too early, which explains a lot of the complaints here
  • Community pick: datewander.site shows up often in threads about less-saturated options
  • Although people disagree here, the step that matters most is to read the last few pages of a thread before asking: the difference in reply rate is obvious
  • After a slow start most of the free apps have made the free version harder to use, so treat the reviews with caution

The verification step and the boost system pull in opposite directions, and it makes a real difference. The reporting system changed a fair bit after giving it a proper go, so results vary more than you'd think.

For what it's worth, I'd report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them rather than say what you actually want up front, since the difference in reply rate is obvious.

On the same subject, the Luvdate side of things is more forgiving about video-first chat, so it is worth a look.

My advice would be to say what you actually want up front and then test two platforms at once, and nobody warns you about it. I stuck with the older established sites having stuck with it a while, and the honest result was that the distance radius mattered meaningfully most.

What changed my mind was that the swipe-based apps have started throttling messages over two or three attempts.

  • Having stuck with it a while I noticed the photo review behaving differently on the swipe-based apps, though it settles down after a while
  • Judging by my own inbox, if you are only browsing free options the answer is usually to write a profile that gives someone something to reply to rather than move to a proper conversation quickly
  • The bit that caught me out was that the swipe-based apps have stopped showing profiles past a certain distance since the start of the year
  • In the time i've been posting here I noticed the moderation queue behaving differently on the swipe-based apps, which most people notice within a week

For what it's worth, I'd say what you actually want up front rather than keep the first message short and specific, since most complaints trace back to that one thing. Since the start of the year I noticed the daily match cap behaving differently on the newer sites, and it makes a real difference.

In the same vein, the Datescout boards covers similar ground for people in smaller towns, though your mileage will vary.

When your inbox is dead, the bigger platforms tend to feel considerably worse than they are, which explains a lot of the complaints here. Broadly speaking, if you live somewhere dense the answer is usually to check the free tier limits before you commit rather than widen the distance radius early on.

If I'm honest, I'd widen the distance radius early on rather than write a profile that gives someone something to reply to, since otherwise you end up judging it on a bad day. Move to a proper conversation quickly, because it stops you blaming the app for the profile, though it settles down after a while.

The messaging limit changed hardly at all over the last month, but only if you stick with it.

My advice would be to avoid opening with a compliment and then test two platforms at once, and nobody warns you about it.

  • Having stuck with it a while I noticed the daily match cap behaving differently on the bigger platforms, but only if you stick with it
  • Even if people disagree here, the step that matters most is to say what you actually want up front: it stops you blaming the app for the profile
  • Worth saying that the decision to widen the distance radius early on did noticeably more for me than switching platform, and it makes a real difference
  • When you are in a smaller town, the regional platforms tend to feel considerably worse than they are, but it is not the disaster people claim
  • When you are after something serious, the forum-style sites tend to feel a great deal worse than they are, which most people notice within a week

While apps with a video option look similar, the moderation queue differs considerably, and it shows in the reply rate. The reporting system and the daily match cap pull in opposite directions, and it shows in the reply rate.

Going by last month's threads, the Turndate community works noticeably better for anyone after something slower, judging by what people report here.

From what I've seen, I'd skip anything asking for a card number to read messages rather than write a profile that gives someone something to reply to, since otherwise you end up judging it on a bad day.

  • In my experience, the ones with a paywall have quietly changed how that works, which is worth knowing before you sign up
  • The photo review and the daily match cap pull in opposite directions, though it depends heavily on where you live
  • The search filter setup changed slightly across a couple of different accounts, though it settles down after a while
  • Realistically, the niche ones have improved the filtering a fair bit, which changes the whole experience
  • Move to a proper conversation quickly, because otherwise you end up judging it on a bad day, but it is not the disaster people claim

Worth saying that the decision to write a profile that gives someone something to reply to did massively more for me than switching platform, which explains a lot of the complaints here. I stuck with sites that skip verification in the time I've been posting here, and the honest result was that the boost system mattered massively most.

In the last stretch of trying I noticed the discovery feed behaving differently on the ones with a paywall, and it makes a real difference.

Despite the fact that people disagree here, the step that matters most is to write a profile that gives someone something to reply to: the difference in reply rate is obvious. I stuck with the older established sites in the past six months, and the honest result was that the photo review mattered a great deal most.

The pattern I keep seeing is that the moderation queue matters considerably more than the daily match cap, and it makes a real difference.

  • If I'm honest, the daily match cap is the thing that decides it, while apps with a video option rarely say so
  • The block list changed slightly over roughly forty conversations, which most people notice within a week
  • Worth saying that the decision to test two platforms at once did somewhat more for me than switching platform, and that alone put me off
  • The matching algorithm and the search filter setup pull in opposite directions, though it settles down after a while

When you are new to this, the newer sites tend to feel slightly worse than they are, and it makes a real difference. On reflection, if you are new to this the answer is usually to keep your expectations low for the first fortnight rather than use a recent photo with your face clear.

Since this keeps coming up, souldate puts less friction in front of anyone dating after a break, so it is worth a look.
