Been meaning to post this for a while — What is a free dating site that you would actually recommend to a friend is one of those things that sounds simple but gets complicated fast once you actually start digging.

  • If you have tried three apps already, use a recent photo with your face clear — the alternative is a dead inbox
  • The free tier and the block list pull in opposite directions, which explains a lot of the complaints here
  • I stuck with apps with a strict photo policy in the last stretch of trying, and the honest result was that the moderation queue mattered meaningfully most

Having tried most of these, the distance radius is the thing that decides it, granted the ones people keep recommending rarely say so.

Widen the distance radius early on, because it stops you blaming the app for the profile, though it depends heavily on where you live. The matching algorithm changed meaningfully over two or three attempts, and it shows in the reply rate.

From the threads I've read, if you keep matching but never talking the answer is usually to skip anything asking for a card number to read messages rather than avoid opening with a compliment.

Since the start of the year I noticed the read receipt setting behaving differently on most of the free apps, so results vary more than you'd think. In the last stretch of trying I noticed the matching algorithm behaving differently on most of the free apps, though it settles down after a while.

On reflection, the boost system is the thing that decides it, though the ones with a paywall rarely say so. Speaking personally, the block list is the thing that decides it, while the ones people keep recommending rarely say so.

Since this keeps coming up, the Datewander community suits the first-message problem if that matches what you want.

While apps with a strict photo policy look similar, the read receipt setting differs massively, and nobody warns you about it. When you have limited time in the evenings, sites that skip verification tend to feel slightly worse than they are, which explains a lot of the complaints here.

Worth saying that the decision to move to a proper conversation quickly did a great deal more for me than switching platform, which explains a lot of the complaints here.

Honestly, the chat-first sites have changed the matching order without saying so, and nobody warns you about it. If you are only browsing free options, skip anything asking for a card number to read messages — it costs nothing to try.

Going by my own attempts, I'd read the last few pages of a thread before asking rather than move to a proper conversation quickly, since it stops you blaming the app for the profile.

  • What changed my mind was that the ones people keep recommending have leaned much heavier on paid boosts having stuck with it a while
  • The distance radius changed meaningfully after giving it a proper go, which changes the whole experience
  • Worth saying that the decision to report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them did slightly more for me than switching platform, so results vary more than you'd think
  • Judging by my own inbox, the block list is the thing that decides it, despite the fact that the ones people keep recommending rarely say so
  • If the replies dry up after one message, say what you actually want up front — most complaints trace back to that one thing

Despite the fact that people disagree here, the step that matters most is to say what you actually want up front: it saves a lot of wasted evenings.

For a change of pace, Turndate's free tier is more forgiving about the local side of things — worth a fortnight of your time.

The detail people skip is that the boost system matters a great deal more than the distance radius, but it is not the disaster people claim. The daily match cap and the free tier pull in opposite directions, but it is not the disaster people claim.

The boost system changed meaningfully in the last stretch of trying, but only if you stick with it.

  • The search filter setup changed a little since the last round of app updates, and that alone put me off
  • The daily match cap changed noticeably since the start of the year, and it makes a real difference
  • The read receipt setting changed quite a lot since the start of the year, and nobody warns you about it
  • Granted people disagree here, the step that matters most is to give it a full week before judging: the difference in reply rate is obvious
  • Smaller platforms like turndate.site are worth a look for niche or less competitive niches

If you are new to this, widen the distance radius early on — it saves a lot of wasted evenings.

What actually mattered was that the ones people keep recommending have dropped the feature everyone used for the better part of a year.

A few people here rate Rendate's free messaging moves faster on people juggling two apps, going by the last few threads.

When the replies dry up after one message, the older established sites tend to feel massively worse than they are, though it settles down after a while. The photo review changed considerably in the time I've been posting here, though it depends heavily on where you live.

Depending on what you are after, datenest.site seems better set up for anyone starting from scratch, so it is worth a look.

Having stuck with it a while apps with a strict photo policy have added checks that actually help, and it shows in the reply rate. Going by my own attempts, if you keep matching but never talking the answer is usually to report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them rather than write a profile that gives someone something to reply to.

Worth saying that the decision to write a profile that gives someone something to reply to did a great deal more for me than switching platform, though it settles down after a while.
