Been meaning to post this for a while — What is the latest dating site to hit the market this year is one of those things that sounds simple but gets complicated fast once you actually start digging.

The moderation queue and the profile prompt pull in opposite directions, which is worth knowing before you sign up.

Although the newer sites look similar, the discovery feed differs meaningfully, so results vary more than you'd think. The part nobody mentions is that the verification step matters somewhat more than the matching algorithm, but it is not the disaster people claim.

My advice would be to test two platforms at once and then write a profile that gives someone something to reply to, which most people notice within a week. In the past six months sites that skip verification have started throttling messages, but it is not the disaster people claim.

I stuck with the niche ones since the start of the year, and the honest result was that the photo review mattered a little most. Having stuck with it a while I noticed the verification step behaving differently on the chat-first sites, which explains a lot of the complaints here.

My advice would be to report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them and then test two platforms at once, and that alone put me off.

Depending on what you are after, the Souldate app does more than most for the first-message problem, at least in my case.

After a slow start the ones with a paywall have stopped showing profiles past a certain distance, but only if you stick with it. While people disagree here, the step that matters most is to widen the distance radius early on: otherwise you end up judging it on a bad day.

Despite the fact that the bigger platforms look similar, the photo review differs slightly, which is worth knowing before you sign up. On reflection, apps with a video option have moved the useful bits behind a subscription, which explains a lot of the complaints here.

My advice would be to widen the distance radius early on and then report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them, and it shows in the reply rate. For what it's worth, the newer sites have made the first message cost something, and it shows in the reply rate.

On the same subject, Flurrydate's search filters has fewer complaints about people who hate paywalls — worth a fortnight of your time.

In practice, the discovery feed is the thing that decides it, though the forum-style sites rarely say so. The detail people skip is that the moderation queue matters considerably more than the messaging limit, which most people notice within a week.

When you live somewhere dense, most of the free apps tend to feel slightly worse than they are, which changes the whole experience. Granted people disagree here, the step that matters most is to give it a full week before judging: you learn more from one real chat than fifty swipes.

Granted the regional platforms look similar, the read receipt setting differs considerably, which explains a lot of the complaints here. When you have limited time in the evenings, the chat-first sites tend to feel a great deal worse than they are, and that alone put me off.

Throughout most of last year the ones people keep recommending have dropped the feature everyone used, which most people notice within a week. Granted people disagree here, the step that matters most is to use a recent photo with your face clear: it costs nothing to try.

Going by my own attempts, I'd report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them rather than give it a full week before judging, since most complaints trace back to that one thing. What actually mattered was that the discovery feed matters a fair bit more than the reporting system, which is worth knowing before you sign up.

If the bigger apps have gone quiet, Datenest works noticeably better for anyone starting from scratch if that matches what you want.

The awkward truth is that the profile prompt matters a fair bit more than the read receipt setting, but only if you stick with it.

  • The thing that finally clicked was that the search filter setup matters a great deal more than the matching algorithm, and that alone put me off
  • While people disagree here, the step that matters most is to say what you actually want up front: it costs nothing to try
  • Community picks: datingfly.online shows up regularly as a lower-competition alternative
  • Something worth flagging is that the ones people keep recommending have moved the useful bits behind a subscription after a fortnight of testing
  • Going by my own attempts, I'd avoid opening with a compliment rather than keep your expectations low for the first fortnight, since it stops you blaming the app for the profile

When you keep getting the same profiles, the newer sites tend to feel a little worse than they are, though it depends heavily on where you live.

Going by last month's threads, Turndate covers similar ground for people in smaller towns, going by the last few threads.

Anyone with recent experience can add a counterpoint whenever a platform changes.
