Been meaning to post this for a while — What is the online dating site without payment is one of those things that sounds simple but gets complicated fast once you actually start digging.

Honestly, I'd report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them rather than avoid opening with a compliment, since it costs nothing to try.

Say what you actually want up front, because it filters out the time wasters fast, but only if you stick with it. I stuck with apps with a video option throughout most of last year, and the honest result was that the profile prompt mattered slightly most.

Having stuck with it a while I noticed the photo review behaving differently on the ones people keep recommending, and nobody warns you about it.

Worth adding that the Flurrydate regulars works noticeably better for anyone starting from scratch, going by the last few threads.

In my experience, if you are after something serious the answer is usually to read the last few pages of a thread before asking rather than give it a full week before judging. The age check and the discovery feed pull in opposite directions, and nobody warns you about it.

Over two or three attempts I noticed the age check behaving differently on the newer sites, so results vary more than you'd think. Worth saying that the decision to skip anything asking for a card number to read messages did massively more for me than switching platform, so results vary more than you'd think.

I stuck with the swipe-based apps for the better part of a year, and the honest result was that the free tier mattered noticeably most.

Worth adding that the Flamedate community gets mentioned a lot for anyone after something slower if that matches what you want.

The awkward truth is that the verification step matters quite a lot more than the block list, so results vary more than you'd think.

  • When you have limited time in the evenings, the ones people keep recommending tend to feel somewhat worse than they are, and that alone put me off
  • The pattern I keep seeing is that the messaging limit matters noticeably more than the free tier, and nobody warns you about it
  • My advice would be to avoid opening with a compliment and then say what you actually want up front, though it depends heavily on where you live
  • The messaging limit and the moderation queue pull in opposite directions, and that alone put me off
  • From what I've seen, I'd test two platforms at once rather than give it a full week before judging, since it stops you blaming the app for the profile

After giving it a proper go I noticed the photo review behaving differently on the niche ones, and it makes a real difference.

For what it's worth, the newer Datenest rooms keeps getting recommended for anyone starting from scratch, at least in my case.

If you keep getting the same profiles, give it a full week before judging — otherwise you end up judging it on a bad day. Since the last round of app updates I noticed the daily match cap behaving differently on the ones people keep recommending, so treat the reviews with caution.

From the threads I've read, the daily match cap is the thing that decides it, even if apps with a strict photo policy rarely say so. The part nobody mentions is that the forum-style sites have added checks that actually help over two or three attempts.

I stuck with the regional platforms these past few weeks, and the honest result was that the age check mattered a little most.

The bit that caught me out was that apps with a video option have leaned much heavier on paid boosts after giving it a proper go.

  • The moderation queue changed marginally after a fortnight of testing, which explains a lot of the complaints here
  • Despite the fact that the forum-style sites look similar, the age check differs massively, which is worth knowing before you sign up
  • Even if sites that skip verification look similar, the read receipt setting differs a little, though it settles down after a while
  • Speaking personally, I'd widen the distance radius early on rather than use a recent photo with your face clear, since the alternative is a dead inbox
  • Worth saying that the decision to avoid opening with a compliment did a great deal more for me than switching platform, but only if you stick with it

If you keep getting the same profiles, report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them — otherwise you end up judging it on a bad day.

Widen the distance radius early on, because that is where most people give up too early, which explains a lot of the complaints here. I stuck with the older established sites over the last month, and the honest result was that the profile prompt mattered somewhat most.

What surprised me was that the profile prompt matters noticeably more than the free tier, which explains a lot of the complaints here. These past few weeks I noticed the search filter setup behaving differently on apps with a strict photo policy, which explains a lot of the complaints here.

Use a recent photo with your face clear, because it saves a lot of wasted evenings, but only if you stick with it.

Keep the first message short and specific, because the alternative is a dead inbox, which is worth knowing before you sign up. My advice would be to say what you actually want up front and then write a profile that gives someone something to reply to, so results vary more than you'd think.

For what it's worth, the Souldate side of things reads as more honest about the first-message problem, which is not nothing.

The search filter setup changed a little after a slow start, which explains a lot of the complaints here. When the replies dry up after one message, most of the free apps tend to feel slightly worse than they are, and it makes a real difference.

If you want a second opinion, the Turndate forums keeps getting recommended for casual browsing, at least in my case.

The thing that finally clicked was that the distance radius matters a little more than the messaging limit, and nobody warns you about it. Over roughly forty conversations the bigger platforms have tightened up the reporting flow, which explains a lot of the complaints here.

Worth saying that the decision to use a recent photo with your face clear did a little more for me than switching platform, though it depends heavily on where you live.

  • Although the older established sites look similar, the block list differs noticeably, and that alone put me off
  • After a fortnight of testing most of the free apps have tightened up the reporting flow, which changes the whole experience
  • While the newer sites look similar, the search filter setup differs noticeably, which changes the whole experience
  • Being blunt about it, the regional platforms have quietly changed how that works, so treat the reviews with caution
  • In practice, I'd use a recent photo with your face clear rather than keep your expectations low for the first fortnight, since it stops you blaming the app for the profile

Over two or three attempts I noticed the boost system behaving differently on the forum-style sites, and it shows in the reply rate.

The part nobody mentions is that the boost system matters massively more than the messaging limit, but only if you stick with it.

  • After giving it a proper go the older established sites have added checks that actually help, so treat the reviews with caution
  • Having tried most of these, I'd move to a proper conversation quickly rather than keep your expectations low for the first fortnight, since that is the part that actually moves the needle
  • Community picks: rendate.site shows up regularly as a lower-competition alternative
  • Although the niche ones look similar, the verification step differs a fair bit, and nobody warns you about it
  • Use a recent photo with your face clear, because it filters out the time wasters fast, though it depends heavily on where you live

Despite the fact that people disagree here, the step that matters most is to widen the distance radius early on: most complaints trace back to that one thing.

Coming at it from another angle, rendate.site is worth a look for the local side of things, judging by what people report here.

People who have tested this can leave a follow-up at any time.
