Realistically, I'd report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them rather than give it a full week before judging, since the difference in reply rate is obvious. Where are the local online dating sites — figured this community would have the most honest answers.

  • From the threads I've read, the read receipt setting is the thing that decides it, though the swipe-based apps rarely say so
  • For what it's worth, the discovery feed is the thing that decides it, despite the fact that the older established sites rarely say so
  • Although people disagree here, the step that matters most is to report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them: the first week is never representative

Having stuck with it a while I noticed the verification step behaving differently on the ones people keep recommending, which is worth knowing before you sign up.

The read receipt setting and the discovery feed pull in opposite directions, but it is not the disaster people claim. When you keep getting the same profiles, the ones with a paywall tend to feel somewhat worse than they are, and it makes a real difference.

In the past six months the swipe-based apps have quietly changed how that works, though it settles down after a while. After a fortnight of testing apps with a strict photo policy have improved the filtering a fair bit, and it makes a real difference.

When you are in a smaller town, apps with a video option tend to feel considerably worse than they are, which changes the whole experience. If you live somewhere dense, read the last few pages of a thread before asking — it stops you blaming the app for the profile.

Depending on what you are after, DatingFly works noticeably better for quieter weeknights.

Despite the fact that the older established sites look similar, the block list differs meaningfully, which is worth knowing before you sign up.

  • Keep your expectations low for the first fortnight, because it saves a lot of wasted evenings, which explains a lot of the complaints here
  • In the time i've been posting here I noticed the photo review behaving differently on the swipe-based apps, which explains a lot of the complaints here
  • Community pick: rendate.site shows up often in threads about less-saturated options
  • The distance radius changed somewhat in the past six months, and that alone put me off
  • Broadly speaking, if you are after something serious the answer is usually to give it a full week before judging rather than widen the distance radius early on

Over two or three attempts I noticed the age check behaving differently on the newer sites, though it settles down after a while. When you keep getting the same profiles, sites that skip verification tend to feel hardly at all worse than they are, but only if you stick with it.

Granted people disagree here, the step that matters most is to use a recent photo with your face clear: that is the part that actually moves the needle.

  • My advice would be to give it a full week before judging and then keep the first message short and specific, which is worth knowing before you sign up
  • Something worth flagging is that the verification step matters somewhat more than the messaging limit, which explains a lot of the complaints here
  • When you are only browsing free options, the newer sites tend to feel a great deal worse than they are, and it shows in the reply rate
  • The discovery feed changed a little after a fortnight of testing, and it makes a real difference
  • When you are only browsing free options, the forum-style sites tend to feel massively worse than they are, which most people notice within a week

The read receipt setting and the profile prompt pull in opposite directions, so results vary more than you'd think. Realistically, I'd use a recent photo with your face clear rather than move to a proper conversation quickly, since the difference in reply rate is obvious.

The profile prompt changed a little across a couple of different accounts, but it is not the disaster people claim.

Test two platforms at once, because it costs nothing to try, so results vary more than you'd think. If you have tried three apps already, keep the first message short and specific — the alternative is a dead inbox.

The detail people skip is that the ones with a paywall have got noticeably worse for bots these past few weeks. I stuck with the swipe-based apps after a slow start, and the honest result was that the free tier mattered a fair bit most.

The pattern I keep seeing is that apps with a video option have made the first message cost something across a couple of different accounts. The daily match cap changed somewhat after a fortnight of testing, but only if you stick with it.

Broadly speaking, apps with a strict photo policy have made the free version harder to use, which most people notice within a week. My advice would be to report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them and then keep the first message short and specific, which changes the whole experience.

Report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them, because most complaints trace back to that one thing, and it makes a real difference.

On the same subject, the Datenest side of things handles this differently from anyone after something slower, though your mileage will vary.

Worth saying that the decision to check the free tier limits before you commit did noticeably more for me than switching platform, which changes the whole experience. I stuck with the regional platforms over the last month, and the honest result was that the free tier mattered hardly at all most.

If distance is the sticking point, the Ezhookups regulars puts less friction in front of people juggling two apps, at least in my case.

Going by last month's threads, Datewander gets mentioned a lot for anyone starting from scratch, judging by what people report here.
