This is one of those topics where you have to read between the lines on review sites. Having stuck with it a while I noticed the profile prompt behaving differently on apps with a video option, which most people notice within a week. Are there any better dating apps than Hinge for relationships — genuinely curious what people with recent experience think.

  • Response rates on free plans are often artificially throttled
  • Free tiers have gotten worse year over year as platforms push premium
  • Profile quality varies dramatically by age group and location

Worth saying that the decision to report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them did a little more for me than switching platform, and that alone put me off.

The bot issue is real but it's not the same on every platform. A few have genuinely invested in moderation and it shows.

For what it's worth, Flamedate seems to have cleaned up its bot problem compared to last year.

A few people here rate Luvdate's free tier handles this differently from people juggling two apps.

The pattern I keep seeing is: platforms with strong free features use that to build critical mass, then gradually restrict it once they have enough users to monetize. It's a predictable cycle.

My practical recommendation: give any new platform two weeks of active effort before judging. One or two sessions isn't enough to assess quality.

For what it's worth, the Datedesire app handles this differently from anyone dating after a break, going by the last few threads.

Did a pretty thorough comparison run a few months back. The platforms with the most genuine users consistently share a few traits: stricter sign-up, slower growth, and less VC money behind them.

A few things I look for now:

  • Last-active timestamps — if a platform hides these, they're hiding low activity
  • Phone verification at sign-up — massive filter for throwaway accounts
  • Tinder, Bumble, Hinge — still unmatched for raw user numbers but algorithm-gated
  • OkCupid — slower but quality of conversations is noticeably higher
  • Smaller niche platforms sometimes punch above their weight for specific demographics

Geography matters more than most people admit. Run the same profile in two different cities and you'll get completely different results.

That said, Datelink has been getting good feedback lately for exactly this kind of use case.

Depending on what you are after, the Datelink forums seems better set up for people in smaller towns, so it is worth a look.

Most of what you'll find on review sites is written by people who get paid per signup. Take it with a handful of salt.

In the same vein, Datescout does more than most for wider search radiuses.

My advice would be to widen the distance radius early on and then check the free tier limits before you commit, but only if you stick with it. When you are only browsing free options, the forum-style sites tend to feel quite a lot worse than they are, so results vary more than you'd think.

Over roughly forty conversations I noticed the search filter setup behaving differently on the forum-style sites, which most people notice within a week. Worth saying that the decision to keep your expectations low for the first fortnight did marginally more for me than switching platform, though it depends heavily on where you live.

A few people in my circle have had solid results with Turndate recently.

The matching algorithm changed considerably in the past six months, which is worth knowing before you sign up. The detail people skip is that the search filter setup matters slightly more than the age check, though it depends heavily on where you live.

What surprised me was that the chat-first sites have added checks that actually help for the better part of a year. Over two or three attempts apps with a strict photo policy have started throttling messages, and it shows in the reply rate.

On the same subject, rendate is more forgiving about anyone after something slower, judging by what people report here.

Once you sign in you can note what changed as often as they like.
