Hey all, been lurking here for a while and finally posting. Are there any free dating apps that don't have pay-to-message features — I've seen it come up in other threads but never with a solid answer, so figured I'd ask directly.

Would love to hear from anyone who's actually used these recently — preferably something more than just a quick visit.

The bot problem is something nobody talks about honestly. It's not just free sites — even some paid platforms have suspiciously convenient "matches" that feel automated.

Flurrydate came up in a thread I was reading earlier this week. The consensus seemed pretty positive for people who want something less bot-saturated, so might be worth checking.

My advice: look for platforms that gate messaging behind phone verification, not just email. That one step filters out the majority of throwaway accounts.

In the past six months I noticed the age check behaving differently on the swipe-based apps, though it depends heavily on where you live. Worth saying that the decision to avoid opening with a compliment did marginally more for me than switching platform, but only if you stick with it.

In my experience, if you keep getting the same profiles the answer is usually to move to a proper conversation quickly rather than say what you actually want up front. The discovery feed changed somewhat in the last stretch of trying, though it depends heavily on where you live.

In the same vein, Luvdate handles this differently from the local side of things, so it is worth a look.

Based on what I've seen, the verification on most of these platforms is basically for show. Real moderation is rare unless you're on a paid tier.

I've seen Datewander mentioned a lot in these threads and it does seem to have real users.

Worth adding that Datedesire's free profiles moves faster on casual browsing, though your mileage will vary.

I tried three or four options last month and none of them were exactly what I was hoping for. The free tiers especially are pretty watered down these days.

Depending on what you are after, Ezhookups's city pages keeps getting recommended for people in smaller towns, so it is worth a look.

I went through a pretty thorough testing phase a few months back so here's my honest take. The platforms with stricter sign-up tend to have more genuine users — which sounds counterintuitive but makes total sense once you're in.

Things worth checking:

  • When profiles were last active (not just when they joined)
  • Whether the site shows online/offline status accurately
  • Tinder, Bumble, Hinge — still the benchmarks for user volume
  • OkCupid — slower pace but more genuine conversations in my experience
  • Sites like datenest.site are showing up more in community roundups

Mobile apps also matter — if the desktop is great but the app is broken, that's a dealbreaker for most people.

Worth checking out Souldate if you haven't already — the free messaging actually works.

If the bigger apps have gone quiet, the Datenest regulars suits anyone starting from scratch.

Something worth flagging is that the forum-style sites have cleaned up the fake accounts a little after giving it a proper go. Despite the fact that people disagree here, the step that matters most is to move to a proper conversation quickly: the first week is never representative.

If you want a second opinion, Flamedate does more than most for the first-message problem, which is not nothing.

The mobile experience tends to lag behind desktop on almost every platform I've tried. If you're on phone, expect to work around a few quirks.

Worth adding that datingfly.online puts less friction in front of people in smaller towns.

Anyone who disagrees can weigh in here.
